Twenty two years ago today, Green Day released their debut full length album, 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, on Lookout! Records.
Originally, the album was released in 1990 as 39 Smooth, but it was reissued in 1991 as a compilation album to include the band's two other EP's; Slappy, and 1000 Hours. This is the only Green Day album that Tre Cool did not play on since John Kiffmeyer had not yet left the band.
In 2007, Green Day re-released this album on Reprise Records, calling it a "remastered" version. According to Nielsen SoundScan, the album has sold 632,000 copies in the United States as of August, 2010.
New to the Green Day fandom, today is the perfect day to add this classic to your collection.

Happy birthday, 1039! :)

Love it for its lo-fi sound and the adorable loser kid type of girl fantasies all over. Refreshing in the era when men were either macho or Morrisey-like.

That's a very nice album/compilation. I remember I wanted to buy it but couldn't find any local record stores that had it, so I bought on Amazon.

Overall the compilation is pretty good to me and the best song is Paper Lanterns

22 wow that's big. not a fan favorite album but still underrated somehow. my favorite song remains At the Library :D

Wow! That's awesome! 16 is my favorite from the album and I think one of the most underrated songs Green Day's ever put out. Of course, if they would actually play it live sometime maybe it would get a little more recognition....

1039 smoothed out slappy hours is not a debut full length album. Why not celebrate 39 Smooth and the EP's releases? 1039 Smoothed isn't a studio album. It's not a debut either. What the fuck is this shit? Just a lame compilation with nothing new on it.

A great album for a great band to kick off with.

Whatever. Lol. I really hate that a compilation is more familiar to some people than the actual albums that the songs are from. But, then again, Jump Salty is a lot easier to have than all the EPs and comps that those songs were from. Just my OCD :P

Now it's 192848 smoothed out slappy hours. Because... 192848 hours is 22 years. No? Okay.

This compilation has always kind of surprised me in terms of subject matter. 1039/Smooth features poppy songs about love and girls. It seems like Green Day grew up immensely in Dookie, with anger emanating from the songs and swearing runs a muck. This jump has always puzzled me, but also fascinates me.

Wow! So cool! Happy birthday 1,039!!!! :runaround:

I think we just generally recognize the compilation as the first album in Green Day's canon, because it's easier than an album and two EP's.

I guess it's my least favourite album, the songs sound really similar to each other. However I love most of them. My favourite is Going to Pasalacqua.

Happy Birthday 1039!

Happy Birthday, 1039/SOSH! What an awesome compilation, I love it. This compilation has some of the best guitar solos ever created,it's an amazing job done on this compilation by Mr. Billie Joe and his guitar!
