Todd Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Green Day writes their songs for themselves and about themselves. Of course, there are going to be themes or ideas that Green Day incorporates into multiple songs. Some examples are the idea of a 'broken home', which weaves its way from Welcome to Paradise, then to Jesus of Suburbia, and then to The Forgotten. Also, 'stop when the red lights flash' which covers the Trilogy from Oh Love to SWTRLF to DRB. Also, the character Amanda who has been carried across Dookie, Insomniac, Nimrod, American Idiot, and Tre. You could even talk about the 'shit' theme of the titles Kerplunk and Dookie. Anyways, this is a place to talk about recurring themes and ideas, and explain what they mean or how they add to Green Day's albums, relationships, or maturity.
green day is Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Stop When The Red Lights Flash is from 21CBD in that Elvis cover. But you already knew that.
DoodleBob Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Well there's the obvious theme of politics that started to make it's first appearance in the Warning area and was carried through out AI and 21stCB. I always liked the political aspect in their songs because it made me think. It was more than a sappy love song that went in and out the ears, it was something that left me thinking about this world we live in, and how fucked up it actually is. I think it's funny (and frightening) that American Idiot is going to be 10 years old and to this day is just as true as it was back in 2004. That's some scary shit right there.
The Grouch is Tracy Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 BJ seems to have a thing for Valentines too., also, for a guy that has such awesome dogs, does seem to use dogs as derogatory terms in a few songs too.

I love songs like Letterbomb, which have more depth compared to songs like 99 Revs or American Idiot, which are kinda obvious.
Shredder2 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Well, I've been getting this impression that the theme for certain songs have been kind of like a "Fuck you" to certain people. xD i might be wrong though *shrugs*

Jollyroger118 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 I forget where Billie said it but in an interview He said He feels like Dookie is almost a concept album which I think is true. Those songs really do fit together and as an album it's very consistent. Kerplunk has a lot of themes about growing up and questioning what you were taught and how to apply it to the world today (or 1991). In a lot of ways Kerplunk is a real precursor to Dookie and it's easy to see how he went from Kerplunk to Dookie. I also feel the same way about Warning and American Idiot. Warning was a little more critical of consumerism and material unhappiness as opposed to politics but you can see where he was going in hindsight.
Jean Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 She.... she screams in silence... She... She's my wild one....
Jollyroger118 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 She.... she screams in silence... She... She's my wild one.... and an extraordinary girl. Listen to those three songs together it's actually pretty cool.
fromdecimateddreams Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Care to elaborate? I can see where he's coming from, as the subject is mentioned in a few songs. Like "you're a suicide makeover" in Prosthetic Head and "so loving you must be like suicide" in Jackass. I don't really know if it's a theme, though, cause to me it seems like just a brief mention in the lyrics. But I dunno.

I was just prodding him because the ehole point of this is to point out and explain themes or ideas, list threads are not allowed, you can't go listing around like he did . But yes, damn, I didn't realize how many songs have that in them. The act of selfdestruction... When there's so little, that that's the only thing left is suicide... To think Billie would have nothing if it wasn't for his music. It's tragic, suicide is. Very good for writing about
Insomniac45 Posted June 27, 2013 Posted June 27, 2013 Uhh, in the trilogy, particularly Dos, Billie mentions "babysitter" quite a bit lol

Green Day, Basket Case, Geek Stink Breath, Brain Stew, Hitchin A Ride, Give Me Novocaine, Restless Heart Syndrome, Lazy Bones, Sex Drugs And Violence and probably a few more I can't think of. Basket Case is about panic attacks and Bran Stew is about insomnia. Also their name is a pot reference, so that one is pretty much given.
