Iop Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 I just watched a great live performance of Green Day playing "80" in 1991. I noticed that in the last chorus, starting at 3:30, Billie changed the words from "if anyone can hear me - slap some sense in me..." to "if adrienne can hear me - slap some sense in me...". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cKYabj1HCsk That reminded me of my first Green Day concert in Cologne, 2009, where he changed the lyrics in "2000 Light Years Away" from "she holds my malakite so tight so, never let go - cause she's 2,000 light years away" to "she holds my malakite so tight so, never let go - cause she's 10,000 lightyears away". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPqLVXYcF7M It's in the 2nd chorus, starting at circa 1:00. I think the "10,000 Light Years Away"-thingy shows that he still plays it for Adrienne. If you assume that a "light year" is really a mile, it makes sense since he's even further away from her here in Germany. I found that pretty touching (<- yeah, i'm a guy, shoot me ) Do you have more examples where it gets clear that he is singing for Adrienne? (I didn't shoot those videos, the 2nd one was the best quality i could find.)
Heather. Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 He does the Adrienne thing fairly often when he performs 80. TBH I definitely don't hear "ten thousand" in that video from Cologne. I think he says two thousand, he's just slurring it like normal. There's an audio from a Boston concert around 2001 where he dedicates 80 to her on her birthday.
Todd Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 Dude, he says Adrienne in every live version of the song. Just not the studio version

Might be the best show I've seen live, that was at Axis a few days after Warning came out. If I remember correctly, he also joked she was turning 18 that day.
dangreenday Posted June 3, 2013 Posted June 3, 2013 2000 Light years away is my all time favourite song ever .. whenever i hear him say "This songs called 2000 Light years away" at the shows i get goosebumps
Iop Posted June 4, 2013 Author Posted June 4, 2013 He does the Adrienne thing fairly often when he performs 80. There's an audio from a Boston concert around 2001 where he dedicates 80 to her on her birthday. Sorry, i didn't know that. Do you (or anyone) know, where i could listen to the birthday-version? TBH I definitely don't hear "ten thousand" in that video from Cologne. I think he says two thousand, he's just slurring it like normal. For 3 and a half years i've been thinking he sang "ten thousand" so maybe that's just what i wanted to hear when i watched the video. But it WOULD have been nice, if he sang it. Somebody has to ask him someday. Still, are there other times when he dedicated a song to her, or mentioned her explicitly? After all "80" and "2,000" the are obvious one's.
JIGD13 Posted June 4, 2013 Posted June 4, 2013 I think that makes sense, especially because the song is for Adrienne
