fatherotti Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 The other day I bought the deluxe version of Uno Dos Tre off iTunes and I can swear they've remixed them. I compared the iTunes version of Uno to the version I bought off Amazon last year and the difference is so clear. For one the iTunes version is much louder but less distorted than the first release. I think they also added some more dynamic range. Just an observation. Anyone else noticed this?
Sanity Loan Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Could be one of the "Mastered for iTunes" albums. Though, I've never noticed a difference in other albums. I may go check it out.

Ehh sometimes those "Mastered for iTunes" albums aren't all they're cracked up to be. I downloaded Alkaline Trio's latest single a while ago, which turned out to be a Mastered for iTunes song, and it was terrible. You couldn't hear the guitars for shit.
WhiteTim Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Yeah the itunes masters are shitty sounding outside computers and ipods
pasalaska Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Could someone explain exactly why you would master something specifically for iTunes? Does it mean more that it's mastered for digital download (vs CD quality)?
green day is Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Could someone explain exactly why you would master something specifically for iTunes? Does it mean more that it's mastered for digital download (vs CD quality)? Yeah. CDs are mastered differently than LPs are mastered differently than Cassettes are mastered differently than digital releases. I don't know if anyone really remasters things for LPs or Cassettes these days though, I'd think record companies would just send them the way they are on the CD.
HolyHandGrenade Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 So, for months now I've been listening to the (deluxe) iTunes versions of the trilogy. Recently, I bought the box set with the real CD's... will the audio quality be better or worse if I rip them and replace the files?

Vinyls will always have a different master (at least if the label/artist/producers knows what they are doing) If you put a cd master on vinyl it'd cause the needle to jump...

If you want a sound that's more compressed and mixed solely to be louder, go with the files from the CD's. If you want a sound that's a little clearer and more dynamic rather than just loud, then stick with the iTunes files. I chose to go with the files Warner Bros. sent me as part of my Ultimate Box Set, which could be one or the other. Maybe if I played those files side by side with the iTunes versions or the CD versions, I could tell which ones I got, but I don't have the time nor the patience for that.
DookieLukie Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I downloaded American Idiot off of iTunes a long time ago back when iTunes coded in 125 kps. Is there a way for me to update these files or do I just have to download the CD files for improved import quality?

If you click on the "Purchased" link on the top right of the iTunes store, you can see which songs are available for a re-download.

If you delete that album from your iTunes Library, you can go back into the store and redownload at no cost. It should list under your purchased items. It'll download in 256kbps.

I got the deluxe version of Uno! pre-ordered on iTunes, but have not noticed any difference to the cd's (I had not realised that the videos would come with the 'free' download from the Deluxe Box Set also, or I probably wouldn't have bothered, but as it went towards sales figures, I didn't mind too much). The only thing I noticed was that the 'free' downloads from Warner, were quite quiet when burned to cd - I did this whilst waiting on the acutal cd's to arrive. Are you saying you think they have put a newer/different version on iTunes?

Perhaps they decided to drop some more dynamic range just to make the tracks sound better or something. The day before I bought it, I remember listening to Uno (The one I bought from Amazon) and I had it up at full blast and I got use to it. When I bought the iTunes version, I almost ruined my hearing because I wasn't expecting it to sound that much louder. It really does.

Yeah, that version came out after the trilogy was released originally, so I highly expect it was mastered.
Jude O'Reilly Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 itunes is just bad and should feel bad in my opinion lol. I say CD/Vinyl quality is always the best in my expierence.
