elcamionos Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I didn't see a thread about this and I had like loads of questions about this and I didn't know if I should post them all in the Q&A thread or whatever... So yeah talk about old school Green Day here and I had like a few questions so I'll post them here if anyone could answer them. When was the Paint factory concert ? Because on youtube it says the 11th of february 1989 but that seems pretty unlikely because people already knew the words to the songs and as well as that it's in Florida and Green Day are from California and it wouldn't make sense for them to play over there for one of there earliest concerts. What is the earliest Green Day footage ? On Setlist.fm on the 26th of November 1988 it says that Green Day played a show at 924 Gilman Street and on youtube there are recordings of the set list but it says that it is from a concert on the 11th of February 1989 (The date Green Day "apparently" played at the paint factory as well ) If these are really recordings from 1988 would that be the earliest Green Day footage or recordings ? How do we know Why do You Want Him is Billie Joes first song ? I heard it was confirmed in an interview, could anyone give me a link ? Why did World Vs World, Jennifer .... never get released ?
HolyHandGrenade Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 This is pretty old http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gh3RhwVr1Bk
VisionsofGreenDay115 Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Yeah but that's 1990 man But you said to talk about old school Green Day.
JIGD13 Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Old school Green Day and the new Green Day are the same exact band except for Al but the band is better with Tré
Todd Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 The 1988 show is confimed to be fake- Paint factory is actually 1990 Billie said in an interview that it was his first song We dont know why they werent released Old school Green Day and the new Green Day are the same exact band except for Al but the band is better with Tré Keep AI out of this, this is for talking about 1987-2002
LisaBJA Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I like the old school and the new school Green Day
EggMong Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Although I love their new stuff the old stuff is my absolute favorite. Nimrod is my favorite album with Insomniac not far behind. I guess I'm just a sucker for short catchy songs!
The Green One Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Although I'm leaning a bit more toward AI-and-onwards-Green Day, old school is still almost just as awesome, especially Kerplunk, Insomniac and Nimrod (Dookie has great singles and a few other awesome songs, but I like these two better). The only oldschool album I'm not that fond of is 1039/smooth. It's okay, but badly mixed and it's too much of the same sort of song.

It's still amazing for a debut album, and the live content from WMMR is amazing, especially Billie's voice when it's not hiding behind the sounds of Blue
LazyPhil Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Is this thread necessary? I mean Old Green Day = New Green Day = Green Day

San Miguel Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 I would love to know more about the early days of the band, and how they eventually fitted into their roles. I'm sure Billie said in an interview that he never intended to be the main singer and of course Mike didn't start on bass as they had Sean Hughes playing bass originally (or so i'm told). it would to really interesting to know if, in the very beginning, there were decisions they had to make, big or small, which if they hadn't made them could have meant that Green Day turned out completely differently or even never formed at all.
The Grohl Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 Old school Green Day and the new Green Day are the same exact band except for Al but the band is better with Tré Thank you. It really puzzles me when people say that their first two albums are the best because they're most punk or something and it's like um....no they sound like their later stuff...it still has melody and catchy vocals. There was still some pop influence in their music so I don't get the big deal.

Green Day have said a million times that their influences were Crimpshrine, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, Sex Pistols, Ramones, etc... They didn't listen to pop music, yes, they make punk-pop music, but pop wasn't an influence

The overall sound of the first album isn't as punk as the 4 albums that followed it imo, i think it's great for the fact it contained Billies best guitar work up until the trilogy, is really catchy and for the last few years as a teenager/ young adult it's songs are so easy to relate to..

Personally, I can hear it in their music due to the vocal melodies...most punk does not have melodies like that. Besides those bands are just a few who have influenced Green Day you never know who else is in there.

Eva Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I can't find it but I have seen a recording of Green Day playing at their high school talent show. Back when they were, you know, still in high school.

The Beatles, the masters of melodic pop music, are considered by Billie Joe and many critics to be a major influence of Green Day. Their influences quite clearly extend beyond punk.

Slave To The Network Posted March 27, 2013 Posted March 27, 2013 I really love their old stuff, but I prefer AI on.
