Todd Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 This week's SotW is 1000 Hours, the very first song off of Green Day's very first release, their 1000 Hours Ep. Recorded December 1988 and released April 1989, It was the foundation of Green Day's future. It was written and composed solely by Billie Joe, for his then-girlfriend Erica Paleno, although other sources claim it was for Green Days first bassist, Sean Hughess sister, Jennifer Hughes. In a Kerrang interview, when asked what song embarresses Billie the most, he said 1000 hours "because not only was it not for a band to play or to play as a band, it's just the sappiest song about a girl to the point where it's like a bad John Hughes movie. 1000 Hours is a love song, about a deep, passionate relationship. The chorus says it all Moving closer, a kiss we'll share. Passionate love to be all night long... Its about feeling the strongest love youve ever had, and embracing it Nothing's more, than what our love is for As for me, I think this song is describing a fantasy about wanting to be with the person you love, but never actually getting to be with them. This song hasnt really been played live since 1991. From 1992-94, the first verse was played alongside songs like Resolution, Bang Your Head, Rock You Like a Hurricane, Master of Puppets and Eye of the Tiger in a medley after some performances of Paper Lanterns. After that, it disappeared again, only to resurface in 2002 when it was briefly played during the bridge of 2,000 Light Years Away. Then, it came back again in 2009, being briefly played with Mother Mary in the end of Hitchin a Ride. Then, finally, it got played in full band in 2010 in Quebec, unfortunately, there is no recording of it on the internet. Theres also a FAKE video of 1000 Hours from Milton Keynes 2005, so dont fall for that. Heres Green Day playing at the Den, in Wigan, December 21st, 1991http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEvtdwFdSSw Heres good audio, for those of you who dont care so much about videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IuECUMKjiLY Starlit night The moon is shining bright You are the one I need Up at your window I see a shadow Silhouette of your grace Here's this flower I picked for all the hours That you've spent with me The one I love That I've been dreaming of Sailing across the sea Let my hands flow through You hair. Moving closer A kiss we'll share Passionate love to be all night long We'll never break, as one too strong Nothing's more Than what our love is for As I kiss your cheek Oh so softly Hands flowing down my back 1,000 hours, I'll never leave Our romance Is a Love trance And now we'll never part 1,000 hours Of such a love shower We'll never stop, once we start
iScottie Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Excellent choice for SOTW. This is a brilliant song that unfortunately goes unnoticed too often.
musso_kn Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 According to Billie this song is as bad as a John Hughes movie Edit: I just realised you already mentioned this in the OP. I'm an idiot.
justcause Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 It's kind of interesting that he's embarrassed about it now, when his then-self just got up there and sang out this rush of full-on romance because that's what he was feeling. What it may 'lack' in artful lyrics is blown away by the innocence of it, the compulsion to somehow put these feelings into words - kisses and touches and moonlit dreams of a love that will last forever. Despite the distance and the overlay of experience, world-weariness, a little dose of cynicism - I hear it resonate in 'Brutal Love', that same radiance at its core. 'Dance forever under the lights'.
YoYoFantaFanta Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I love the sound on this one and this song along with the entire 1000 Hours EP really describes infatuation well.
Jean Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 This would have been a good first single if Lookout actually promoted their artists.
cartoonjunkie Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Again I must mention this, that nowhere in the song does Billie say 'he' 'she' 'him' 'her'. Which is why I fancy this song the most, cause it leaves the imagination open to wonder who else he could be singing about.
Lauren Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I mean, it's a really nice poem, but Billie's singing on this song is bad (at least, bad for Billie). He's like, all over the place.
LazyPhil Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 I mean, it's a really nice poem, but Billie's singing on this song is bad (at least, bad for Billie). He's like, all over the place. He was just a teenager writing a cheesy song about a girl
moonflower93 Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Great SOTW choice. It's timeless, but Billie seems to hate it/ is embarrassed by the song.
Asa. Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Don't get me wrong, I love this song, but something about it is so damn cheesy, it's good. I guess the raw recording and the lyrics really bring out the theme of it being just a teenage guy in love.
HARVESTER Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Can you imagine it being vocalized by a female?
HolyHandGrenade Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Billie said he hates this song Great SOTW choice. It's timeless, but Billie seems to hate it/ is embarrassed by the song. He also hates Restless Heart Syndrome, and I love that one too. Plus he said that 99 Revs is the best song he's ever written. Basically, don't trust Billie on his own work!
MaraGreenDay Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 One of my favorites songs, i love it so much!!
LazyPhil Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 He also hates Restless Heart Syndrome, and I love that one too. Plus he said that 99 Revs is the best song he's ever written. Basically, don't trust Billie on his own work! you can nerver have a normal opinion on your own work, you will always too hard on yourself at some point
tdlyon Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 He also hates Restless Heart Syndrome, and I love that one too. Plus he said that 99 Revs is the best song he's ever written. Basically, don't trust Billie on his own work! He didn't say 99 Revs was the best song he's ever written, he said it was among his favorite. Not necessarily best.
HolyHandGrenade Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 He didn't say 99 Revs was the best song he's ever written, he said it was among his favorite. Not necessarily best. Quoted from Rolling Stone: "I listen to '99 Revolutions' [on Tre] and think it's one of the best things I ever wrote"
LazyPhil Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 He didn't say 99 Revs was the best song he's ever written, he said it was among his favorite. Not necessarily best. Yes he did.

Kerplunk!!! Posted March 24, 2013 Posted March 24, 2013 Really like this song, espescially the solo vocal and guitar part before the last chorus and the and the riff at the end is pretty nice to.
