Hey!

I haven't seen Mike using his Gibson Grabber bass for a long time, but searching for a recent picture of him using this bass I found this one:

http://www.localemag...ge-countian.jpg

(The other interesting thing is that Billie is wearing the same clothes he used on Nuclear Family promotional video!)

Anyway, my question is: does anyone know when was the last time Mike played live using The Grabber? And this picture is so recent, but seems to be a soundcheck or rehearsal, does anyone recognize this place?

Blue is an icon and I really think that the grabber is too, would enjoy to see Mike using it on gigs again.

Cheers,

Adriano

I guess it can't be too recent because Mikes hair is so short

He should definitely bring it back.

Love those things. I've owned two of them because of Mike. But I thought the neck on his was busted beyond repair??

Mike's hair changes so much that we can't use it as time measure hahaha Yes, recent but apparently not so much!

I remember seeing this pic last year, so i dont think its recent, but i may be wrong. Still, very cool bass, hopefully he uses it on this tour.

I've been wondering if he still used it :D I agree, it is iconic, I've allways loved that bass.

Agree, for me it's so iconic as Blue. It'd be nice to see him playing it in recent gigs.

There's a brazilian magazine with a pic of him play the grabber that seems to be 2010/2011 but I never identified the venue and if it really happened.

He brought it out at their show in Montreal on August 21st, 2010 and I was pretty excited to see it. I think there was one other show that he played it since then though...

Thank you! I'll search for videos from this gig/soundcheck and if I find something I post here.

its actually not the grabber model. gibson has 3 models that use the same dimensions w/ slightly different setups. theyre the 'grabber', 'ripper' and 'g-3'. the one mike plays (played) is the G-3. if you look close at the headstock, you can see the model name on the truss rod cover on the headstock. theyre all REALLY heavy weight basses, but they all sound awesome. the g-3 has a pickup that slides within the body cavity to 3 different positions, hence the name 'g-3'. the g-3 also has a triangular shaped headstock, as does the grabber, while the ripper has a squared head. if you find one of these, buy it. you wont be disappointed. even the epiphone re-issues are great. i have one of the re-issues.

tre DID accidentally snap the head off at some point around the end of the insomniac era, during one of the destructive show endings...but with the right parts and a good guitar tech, it (obviously) can be salvaged in most cases.

i love this bass. to me, its the sound i was indoctrinated with. which is why i went out of my way to obtain one like it.

what id like to know is, whats the bass mike used as his backup during the dookie era shows. you see mike playing it during paper lanterns @ woodstock '94 and in various live photos from '94....it has a split headstock, made of aluminum....

That one with the aluminum neck is a Vaccaro. They're long out of production, but I emailed a rep at the company a while back who confirmed it was indeed one of theirs. Wish I could remember the model; it's neither the X-Ray or Generator X...

thanks for this very helpfull info, I always thought that G3 and The Grabber was 2 different ways to name the same model. in fact it's very difficult to find one of this to buy, the sound of the bass is great and i hope someday i can have one in my hands (or watch mike playing it live of course:) )

Just for curiosity, in my country there's an old singer that looks like Mike (with his blonde cut): Enzo Paolo Turchi, check it out and have a laugh)
