Prosthetic Brain Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 There is one thing that has been really bugging me. It seems that Billie Joe does not sing the "screaming" parts on "Let Yourself Go" live as he does on the album (with the exception of the first live video they released for the song). They have Jason White do it. No offense to Jason, I love him and all, but he just sounds kinda awkward doing it. Anyone know any reasons or possible explanations for doing this?
Drankolz Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Billie did it at Summer Sonic in Japan for example, and also at the Echoplex show in Los Angeles!. I can't tell for sure right now, but I think he also did it at the three shows in Germany I. So the first time for Jason would have been the MTV VMAs performance. I personally think he sounds pretty good doing it! My take on why he does it is that they want to give him some more credit as he's becoming more and more of an official 4th member while at the same time the screaming is not exactly what helps you not to loose your voice as a singer when performing every night.

Billie does do the screaming part live. Jason only did that on the VMA's when Billie's throat wasn't too well.
Billie's Banana Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Yes Billie did it in Germany I think. Billie does do the screaming part live. Jason only did that on the VMA's when Billie's throat wasn't too well. sounds logical.
Vic_Rattlehead Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Jason White is a goon Um... why? Billie does do the screaming part live. Jason only did that on the VMA's when Billie's throat wasn't too well. Actually, Jason did it on the Irving Plaza video too

Billie always did it live initially. Jason started doing it after Billie got sick in Italy, since his voice was fucked. It'll be interesting to see if they just have him do it all the time now, or if Billie eventually takes it back.
Alan86 Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I liked Jason doing it. Especially in the VMAs I thought he did a great job.
solongfromthestars Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Billie sang them at Rock am See and most of the pre-Italy videos I've seen. I guess like others have said, Jason sang them later because Billie was still a bit sick after the Bologna thing. I think Jason sounds great but I do prefer Billie's vocals on that part.
porksoda Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I like Jason doing them live. It doesn't really matter though. It's just yelling.
Breakdown_EE Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Jason did it the first time at vma. It was their first performance after billie was in hospital in italy and it seemed that his voice wasn't fully recovered so jason did it and it seems that they sticked with it. I think it doesn't make a huge difference
StuckWithRob Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Billie has to do it, Jason sounds terrible when he does it
Sleeper Agent. Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Because Jason won the arm wrestling match. I would have to agree with that, it must be the reason why Tre has almost no songs, because Billie is the arm wrestling king and has been beaten by Tre twice.

Hermione Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Why do they do anything when they play live? Because it's cool, it's nice to mix things up, it's entertaining, it's fun, they feel like it etc. I doubt it's a carefully planned and calculated move, they probably just thought it'd be cool so they added doing it to their live show just like they add any of the other hundreds of little things they do to a live show. Personally I think it's cool to have the "back and forth" between two singers on the song, and to see them change things up from how it is on the CD, and interesting to see different band members included in different ways. No idea if those were their precise reasons but I guess they must've been something along those lines.
Todd Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Where did all of Mike's background vocals go? It seems that Jason took those over as well
Flitzpiepe Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I think LYG is a tough song to sing live for Billie. It's super fast and these lines sung by Jason might get him some time to take a breath? Thought about that? Anyway, I like the way Jason screams
Hermione Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Where did all of Mike's background vocals go? It seems that Jason took those over as well Erm do you mean live? Mike and Jason each still do the same amount of backing vocals they've always done live. Meanwhile on the album it's mostly just Billie. Jason hasn't "taken over" anything

Vic_Rattlehead Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 Does Mike do any backing vocals on any of the new songs? Yeah, in videos of Stay the Night, Let Yourself Go, Kill the DJ, Oh Love, etc, you can always see Mike singing.
whatserbmae Posted October 7, 2012 Posted October 7, 2012 I think Jason does it better than Billie, and I really hope he will continue doing that part and I'd also love to see him do small parts of other songs. He has an amazing voice! Him doing that part on LYG also gives Billie some time to breath, which I think is needed as it's a demanding song.
