Rancid'sTime Bomb in Fun With Dick and Jane

The Ramones' Blitzkrieg Bop in Jimmy Neutron

The Buzzcocks' Ever Fallen in Love in Shrek 2

Henry Rollins acting on Teen Titans

Refused in Friday Night Lights

Suicidal Tendencies' Institutionalized in Repo Man

Just some examples of punk music being utilized in movies and TV. I'm not trying to rehash the "punk or not" debate, I just figured I'd throw out some bands who have had songs or even acted on popular movies/TV shows. It's nothing new, nothing unheard of. The point being that Green Day are a popular fucking band whose music is going to expand on every and all forms of media, from Broadway to teen movies, whether we like it or not. Hating the fact that ONE SONG is going to be in a movie soundtrack is like saying you hate all cats because one cat was mean to you.

Oh... and actually it's my guilty pleasure to watch these films with a certain friend of mine to laugh our asses off and make fun of it. Yes, we actually paid money to see it.

The second one was the most hilarious.

Exactly the same thing. But really, it's so stupid that it's actually really-really funny. And 2nd was the most hilarious, so true

You're still missing the point. They did say they disliked twilight. They made it apparent so what now has caused them to change their minds? It seems money. Maybe they had some sour grapes from being left of the previous soundtracks. Either way, this isn't how I think a respectable band conducts itself. Also you said it, it's the twenty-first century, viral marketing is easier now than its ever been. What do you think is grabbing more peoples attention billie's meltdown or twilight? We both know the answer and if it weren't for the venue he chose to do it at, I'd imagine the rant would have even more support than it already does. You don't need movies to promote your music, you don't need angry birds, just face it.

Are you suggesting Billies meltdown was a pr stunt cause if you are you are not worth my time. Sour grapes from being left off previous soundtracks? What? Are you serious. Its not how a respectable band conducts itself. Every freaking band on the planet jumps at the chance to have a song on a film soundtrack. Are you pissed at them as well Jesus Christ. Bands have been using movies for decades to promote their music so your logic behind that is flawed my friend. I dont even understand some of this post you made. What has the rant have to do with anything.. Like I said its nothing new if you think it is then your are severly in denial about how bands promote their music

Ehh... the Ramones and Buzzcocks weren't at all relevant when their music was used and I'm guessing they were just hoping for some more money to get by on. Henry Rollins wouldn't have really been relevant either on Teen Titans, and Repo Man was a cult film about a punk rock kid that used an all punk rock soundtrack so if Green Day were to be in something like that I don't think you'd get the same reaction as this. I don't know much about Rancid so I won't bother with that point. And I am pretty sure the Friday Night Lights thing was after Refused broke up but I could be wrong. I'm just sort of playing devil's advocate here because I do think there is a distinction between this and some of those other promotions you mentioned. Rock the Casbah was in a commercial and if I remember correctly Strummer explained that it was to allow the band members to get some more money and share the song so maybe you're right.

I don't like the trilogy promotion...at all

Agreed. It feels like their label's marketing team is just throwing Green Day at everything they can just to see what will stick.

I don't think you listen to a very wide array of bands if you think they would all jump at the chance to be on a movie soundtrack especially if they've already dissed that movie. I was trying to understand why they would be dissing the movies so I suggested maybe their responses were just bitter. Also I don't mean billie's meltdown was a pr stunt but I'd be naive if I didn't believe it helped to promote the record moreso than any of the other attempts did.

Green Day's potential album buyers play Angry Birds and watch Twilight? Are. you. fucking. kidding. me? They clearly chose them based on popularity. They could have chosen a different genre at least. Or even better, they could have chosen something cool...

I think a LOT of people played Angry Birds even before the Green Day version came out (I prefer Cut the Rope, personally). And, it would seem, that there are some people on this thread who were already planning to see the last Twilight film. So.....yes?

Ok folks, let's do a GDC rewind.....here's what I think the deal is. Many of us will recall that back in August as Warner was starting to promote the album trilogy, Melissa saw through a lot of the bullshit and tried to expose the label (and the band) for promoting very adult content to the tween set -- and also called the whole team out for beginning the sanitization of American Idiot for re-release by retailers that the band had previously disparaged. Her Huffington Post op-ed (http://www.huffingto..._b_1844276.html) generated a lot of controversy about who was responsible for this and what was really happening, but when you look at things like the early single selections and the "alternate" clean version of the Kill the DJ single, the shallow "Ooh! Look - TITTIES!!" Oh Love video, the Angry Birds tie-ins, Billie mothballing his Twitter account in favor of Instagram, limited and "safe" tour venue choices, the crash-and-burn appearance schedules and non-headliner festival placements that had to have been a big factor in Billie's meltdown in Vegas a few weeks ago, and now the Twilight placement, one thing seems pretty clear to me: She was spot on, and those of us who villified her for it here owe her an apology. One other important thing to note -- within a few weeks after the article appeared, Warner began reversing course. Apparently in response to the fan outrage that the article generated, they re-posted the uncensored American Idiot video, did some surprise single releases from Uno in a very "let Green Day be Green Day" way, and have (mostly) returned to marketing the band as an established rock artist instead of a Bieber-esque tween pop idol. In hindsight, whether it was intentional or not or whether any substance abuse intervention was actually needed, Billie's on-stage tantrum at iHeart I think actually helped restore some of the band's cred with their core fan base and also ground Warner's poorly-thought-out marketing plan for October and November to a complete halt. I find it more than coincidental that during this time, Warner Music Group posted a job opening for a high-level position responsible for managing promotional efforts for the label's major artists -- this would suggest, though I cannot be certain, that someone's head may have rolled as a direct result of the Green Day marketing debacle and resulting fanbase fallout. So, props to Warner for doing what's needed to be done to right the ship long after it had already left port. That being said, however, there are some things that would have been in the pipeline well before the last month or so, that could not be stopped easily, and that are starting to emerge now. One would certainly be the continuing Angry Birds tie-ins with Rovio; the other would be getting a song from the trilogy on the Twilight soundtrack. Hopefully this will be the last "WTF!?" face-palmer that we have to deal with for this release cycle.

Dude, the tween/teen set have always been a part of Green Day's marketing. Hell, they even market to children! Literally, they've had their songs used in Kidz Bop compilations (from both AI and 21CB), and songs from Dookie and Insomniac have made their way into animated films. Plus, Green Day was nominated for, and won, a Kid's Choice Award back in 2006, which Billie Joe showed up in person to accept. Fair enough, if you think they shouldn't direct their marketing that way, but this is nothing new. How many pre-Trilogy examples do people need to give before that sinks in?

Also, as has been pointed out previously, Green Day legally needs to sign off on all of these various outlets using their music, their band logos, and in the case of Angry Birds, they needed to sign over likeness rights as well for the little Green Day piggies. This is not something that could've been done or forced by Warner without the band's knowledge or consent. So, even if Warner's people devised this marketing strategy in the first place and floated all of these endeavors past Green Day, the boys needed to give them the nod to go through with it.

I do think that fan outrage probably brought attention to the censored AI video, leading to the re-uploading of the uncensored one, but based on the Billboard feature article we got a long time ago, I'd say most of the surprise song debuts (aside from Billie's takeover of Radio One, which happened prior to the HuffPo article, ftr) were things that were already planned from the beginning.

Just realized this was my 500th post!

Lol. Are you really that naive to believe bands dont jump at the chance to promote their music. I listen to alot of bands. And and a vast array of them have had music on soundtracks. For christs sake the Beatles made a movie for them to star in and to promote their music. Its nothing new. Muse stated they didnt like the twilight franchise their song is on the last last soundtrack. And like I said if Green Day hated it so much they could refuses MCR have done this and stated so. So feel free to think they hate it but I dont believe they hate is that much. They are not bitter. God its like talking to a two year old.

Not only in this thread, I see you often 'standing out' for such things, at least that's the way I experience it. Like as if other's can't have a different opinion and only your's is right, not trying to offend you, though. Never mind.

Look, I'm going to try to explain this one more time but it doesn't seem to be working. Do bands like to have their music on soundtracks? Sure, some do, some don't. BUT... I don't think respectable bands diss a franchise an then lend their song to it. I'll ask you again, why do they suddenly like twilight when they didn't before? I'm not suggesting this is a conspiracy, I'm trying to explain that there must be a damn good reason why a band would contradict themselves like this. You're right, they could refuse, so why didn't they if they've made a point of dissing the franchise in interviews and in concert? The Beatles were a huge mainstream act who had no problem promoting themselves through corporate ads. I like their music but let's be honest, even Lennon who was supposedly a socialist, tried to get all the big business promotion he could. That's why I'm becoming more disenfranchised and finding the band harder to defend. How am I supposed to argue for them. This is very hypocritical and I dislike that sort of thing. If it doesn't bother you, then you probably have a different viewpoint which isn't necessarily right or wrong. What is wrong is trying to force your point across rather than explain it. I hope this helps you to understand the opposite position a little better.

Im not trying to force my opinion on you at all. The problem Im having is why your taking issue with them having their song on the soundtrack theyve had their songs used on soundtracks before. Green Day are a mainstream band as well. Its not like theyve suddenly sold their souls. Thats my point you seem offended they would do something like this which i dont find logical at all but whatever. This topic isint worth the 11 pages its created

I'm oh so sorry for my stupid opinion and for saying in a kind way that your bitching about everything and nothing is fucking annoying, please go on and tell me about the great benefits and wisdom you gained in 7 ridiculous years of life experience you're ahead. Judging someone from their age counts to the most retarded things someone can do - You just disqualified yourself. You can't force everyone to have your opinion, wether their's seems dumb to you or not, and I'm surely not gonna change mine.

You are never going to make friends if your attitude on a discussion forum is "FUCK ALL OF THESE STUPID OPINIONS GODDAMNIT WHY ARE YOU ALL SO STUPID STOP TALKING ABOUT YOUR FAVOURITE BAND." Nobody cares if you don't like the thread, we're not forcing you to post in it but you're forcing us to read your rude and pointless posts.

Also kudos on bringing up age, quality d-bag move.

Please dont put words in my mouth thank you very much. Did I say to stop talking about Green Day also my fav band? No. I didnt call anyone in particulars opinion stupid I just merely said there are some stupid comments being posted. And no Im not forcing you to read my opinions either you can do just exactly what you said and not read them but I am entitled to them and to argue my point. Also you know what else is a dbag move calling someone a dbag. Cheers for that.

No, but I mean saying that it's stupid to talk about this and it's an idiotic thread is the fucking same as saying "don't talk about it." Obviously people are going to discuss it you sillygoose, it's a Green Day forum and this is a cool piece of GD-related news. You are clearly mad that people feel the way they do and you insulted them for it. Also yeah, you are forcing me because I want to read this discussion and I have every right to. You have every right to post in here too, but why the fuck are you if all you're gonna do is bitch about it? I have to read that post now because you felt I shouldn't be talking about it.

I don't think it's a douchebag move to call somebody out when they're being douchebaggy. Plenty of regular people have called me out for dbaggy things, it doesn't change how they are acting in any significant way but then again I don't fucking study the science of douchebagology.

Gah, fuck this, it's just unrelated and bitching back and forth. I'm out.

Chill out please people! There's no need to get aggressive and start insulting each other, just because someone doesn't share your opinion that doesn't mean you need to get angry. If you want to debate please do so civilly.

Yeah, nothing. That's not what I meant, but I understand what you mean. I've put it the wrong way. There's nothing wrong with only liking one song, and of course it's only great if they become fans.

What I worry about is the ones who rather "hate" the other stuff they make. Because that has just happened to me.

I was playing Kill The Dj in my class and this one girl really like it. And just like every time i'm at the computer she like "play that one with the dj". Then she asked me to play more, and so I did because it would be cool if she liked more. But she didn't, she just like laughed and said it was shit. That just annoyed me a lot, I guess it's just my irritation with her that came out.

Yeah, I suppose that kind of thing can be irritating to be fair . I think it's worth it though because for every however many people have that reaction there'll be a few who do like it when they hear more. Hopefully having a song in this film will enlighten a few more people about how great Green Day are.

I hope the forgotten is a little bit sad. That would be nice

I think The Forgotten is the song that Billie mentioned in one of the earlier interviews that includes the lyrics "Don't turn away from the arms of love."

You know how he wanted to end 21CB on a hopeful note with See The Light... probably similar vibe here.

I think you're taking the "disliking Twilight" thing way too seriously. They just made a jokey comment about it, that doesn't mean they officially hate everything about it for life. By your definition they've never been a "respectable band", because they've often poked fun at aspects of things but then praised other aspects of them or changed their mind, or poked fun at things they actually like as a joke. They've made snarky jokes about bands and celebrities they actually like or don't really have a problem with, Green Day fans, and even themselves and their own music and videos. It's called having a sense of humour and not taking life or yourself too seriously.
