Fuzz Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I'm rebuilding the random facts on GDA and would like some help from you lovely people. Here's what I need 1) Mistakes or incorrect information. Some of these were written yeaaarsss ago and might have been proven untrue already. Let me know if anything listed should be removed. 2) Spell check/grammar. These old facts were all written long before we really cared too much about how it read. If anything is written really poorly, let me know. 3) New facts to include! Any funny little easter eggs in new albums, facts from interviews over the last 4 years that are noteworthy. Anything you think would be interesting to other fans. 4) Feedback on the page. This isn't the final product. I literally threw this together in 15 minutes. If you have suggestions on better ways to organize the content to make it easier to read or more interesting, let me know. Here's the page. http://www.greendaya.../band/facts.php Feel free to leave your comments/suggestions right here in this thread.
Nemo. Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 but i'm not able to help because my engish isn't that good...
Pieces of Truth Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 36) On either the cover art or booklet art of Kerplunk, Dookie, and Insomniac they're is a gun. "there's a gun" ? 13) If you take the chords and rhythm from the Bltikrieg Bop intro, keep the rhythm, but play the chords backwards, it's the "Welcome to Paradise" into. Blitzkrieg Bop Yep. I read them all. I have no life.
JDookie Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 7) Green Day has 14 transitional songs. They are Chump/Longview, Brain Stew/Jaded, Uptight/Last Ride In, and Jinx/Haushinka, Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We the Waiting/St. Jimmy, and Give Me Novacaine/She's a Rebel. If you take the chords and rhythm from the Bltikrieg (Blitzkrieg) Bop intro, keep the rhythm, but play the chords backwards, it's the "Welcome to Paradise" into. ->intro I just read quickly that section! Btw there is a thread about things hidden in songs, I think that it could be useful for adding new facts
blitzkriegdeb Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 #55 General - It should say "CD" after Nimrod Also, for a new fact, I forget which interview it came from, (during the American Idiot era for sure, the scans are on GDA), Tre talked about how once they rented out an entire movie theater to watch Team America: World Police and did bong rips with New Found Glory. Either he or the band ended up having to leave because they couldn't stop laughing throughout the whole thing. Or something along those lines, I can't remember the story correctly.
joeysturkeyhead Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 number 6 about the insomniac name is wrong. Insomniac was suposed to be named jesus christ supermarket. When Green Day saw the cover of the album billie asked the artist if he'd even been sleeping and the guy said "that doesn't matter, I'm an insomnia". No one knows if that's what changed their mind about the name, but it could be. The artist said so in "the only rhyme that bites". 38: Insomniac was first to be named "Jesus Christ Supermarket". Billie regrets not keeping that name. Maybe it was also supposed to be named Tight Wad Hill, but jesus christ supermarket wasn't just what billie wanted to name it as he said in his tweet, it was actually supposed to be named that.
gloria123 Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 i think for number 10 you should name the albums because it's a little confusing. number 11 and 37 should be put together or put closer to each other because they're both talking about similar things if you want more weird music video trivia watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXiskSLUVUM
Guest Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 "4) Billie also plays the harmonica, mandolin, drums, and the piano. Mike also plays the farfisa, guitar, and the drums. Tre also plays the guitar and the accordian." Accordion is spelt like so. "9) When Green Day first got started, their tour bus was an old bookmobile van that Tre's dad bought and fixed up. He drove them around show to show." "around from show to show" sounds better. "10) Five of Green Day's mainstream albums all begin with drums." The "all" is unnecessary. Also, consider listing the albums (Kerplunk, Dookie, Nimrod, Insomniac, and Warning) "12) Weird Al Yankovic has covered two Green Day songs. Basketcase with his song "Alternative Polka", which is on the album Bad Hair Day. And also "American Idiot" with "Canadian Idiot" on his album The Essential Weird Al Yankovic" Basket Case is two words. "14) Green Day hates ska except for the band Operation Ivy." Green Day is singular, so should "hate". "15) Billie, Mike, and Tre did all of their own stunts in the "Walking Contradiction" video including a scene were Billie almost gets hit by a car. Billie said "Tr scared me into it. I was so scared..I thought I was gonna die right there with all the cameras on me..Well I can think of worse ways to die". The intersection where most of the action happens in the "Walking Contradiction" video is Centre St. and 7th St. in Los Angeles." Just neatened it up a bit: 15) Billie, Mike, and Tre did all of their own stunts in the "Walking Contradiction" video, including a scene were Billie almost gets hit by a car. Billie said "Tre scared me into it. I was so scared... I thought I was gonna die right there with all the cameras on me... Well I can think of worse ways to die". The intersection where most of the action happens in the "Walking Contradiction" video is Centre St. and 7th St. in Los Angeles. "21) On the dookie cover, the right side, on one of the building's it's written 'Twisted Dog Sisters'--this was the name for an actual group of girls from Berkely." Dookie*, Berkely* "22) Pat Hynes is a well known Berkely artist who did the liner notes for both Dookie and Kerplunk." Berkeley* "23)The album Kerpluk! is dedicated 'in loving memory of Gravy'. Mike's pet cat who died." 23)The album Kerpluk! is dedicated "in loving memory of Gravy", Mike's pet cat who died. "25) The video for Basketcase was filmed in black and white, they added color afterwards." Again, Basket Case is two words. I'll let you have the American spelling of colour "28) On the Kerplunk CD, there's a song called Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?, and on the Screeching Weasel cd, "How to Make Enemies and Iritate People", There's a song called I Wrote Holden Caulfield." CD takes capitals, irritate has 2 "r"'s, and the capital "T" on there's is unnecessary. Also, you forget to open the quotation marks on "I Wrote Holden Caulfield". "30) On the Dead Kennedy's cd, Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables, and on track 9, I Kill Children, it starts out with "GOD TOLD ME TO SKIN YOU ALIVE", the name of the artwork for Insomniac." CD takes capitals. "31) If you turn the volume up and listen very closely to Good Riddence you can hear Billie Joe say "fuck" in the beginning." Riddance is spelt like so. "32) On 1039/smoothed out slappy hours the band recorded and mixed the record in two day and only cost $675 to record and sold nearly a million copies." Use capitals for the album title. Also, consider using commas instead of "and". "36) On either the cover art or booklet art of Kerplunk, Dookie, and Insomniac they're is a gun." there*. Seriously, guys. "37) On the front cover of Insomniac, in the flames, there are hidden pictures. you can find a naked woman, 3 faeries, a skull, and several other ghosly faces." ghostly* "38) Insomniac was origanally going to be called Tight Wad Hill." originally* "41) Jesse Micheals, ex-lead singer of Operation Ivy did the disc and cover art for 1,039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours, Jesse Micheals and Operation Ivy were then thanked in Kerplunk! along with Tim Armstrong from OPIV." Pretty sure Michaels is spelt like that. "43) The dog on the Slappy E.P.'s name is Mickey, "Slappy" was a nickname given to him by Jason Relva." Use a full stop, not a comma after Mickey. "52) The house where they filmed Longview wasn't only inhabited by the band...it was also lived in by several other people, and it was the basement to a real house, and in the kitchen the pipes were so low that they would hit their head on them. And it only had about one bedroom." "And it only had about one bedroom"? Rephrase this. "53) In Longview, after they say "Call me pathetic, call me what you will", you can hear something in the background." It's one of their friends shouting "WILL". He used to do it at their shows, so they got him to do it on the record. "56) On the Boulevard of Broken Dreams video, St. Jimmy and Whatsername (the ones from the Limitied Edition booklet of American idiot) are shown standing around a trash can fire." Limited* Videos "2) In 1995 or so, the video for 'Longview' was critiqued on the popular MTV show, Beavis & Butthead. 'Basketcase' was also critiqued on the "Spanish Fly" episode of Beavis and Butthead." Basket Case 2 words. "5) The guy from the Time Of Your Life video, is also the dude who used to play Carter on the TV show "ER", he comes up twice in the video." Could be put together better, as in less commas and more full stops. Songs "3) In Going To Pasalacqua at the very beginning right before you hear Billie sing "Here we go again" you can hear someone cough. Also, in Prosthetic Head after the bridge and when it's just a soft guitar then Billie Joe starts sining right before he does you can also hear someone cough then too." singing* "7) Green Day has 14 transitional songs. They are Chump/Longview, Brain Stew/Jaded, Uptight/Last Ride In, and Jinx/Haushinka, Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We the Waiting/St. Jimmy, and Give Me Novacaine/She's a Rebel" have* "13) If you take the chords and rhythm from the Bltikrieg Bop intro, keep the rhythm, but play the chords backwards, it's the "Welcome to Paradise" into." intro*, and Blitzkrieg* "14) When Green Day recorded "Dry Ice", they kept messing up and ended up doing about 18 takes on the song until they finally got it down. So at the end of the song you can hear them all shouting "YES! YES! YES!", because they finally got it don" down* or done*, not sure which is meant. These are all the mistakes I could find. Hope this helps. And yes, I am a sad grammar Nazi
Iza. Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Tré's dad might be the guy who holds the piano in the Walking Contradiction video.
iltrenta Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 3) In Going To Pasalacqua at the very beginning right before you hear Billie sing "Here we go again" you can hear someone cough. Also, in Prosthetic Head after the bridge and when it's just a soft guitar then Billie Joe starts sining singing right before he does you can also hear someone cough then too. 15) Billie Joe sometimes changes the word "overjoyed"to "unemployed" when singing Jesus of Suburbia. "Am I retarded or an am I just overjoyed" 7) Green Day has 14 transitional songs. They are Chump/Longview, Brain Stew/Jaded, Uptight/Last Ride In, and Jinx/Haushinka, Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We the Waiting/St. Jimmy, and Give Me Novacaine/She's a Rebel. - There's Last of the American Girls/Murder City too!- 12) Weird Al Yankovic has covered two Green Day songs. 'Basketcase' was also critiqued on the "Spanish Fly" episode of Beavis and Butthead. Basket Case Also, for new facts you could add those tweets posted by Billie Joe, as the one he said that he wanted to name Insomniac "Jesus Christ Supermarket" or something like that
.................... Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 In 23, it should be Keplunk!, not Kerpluk!
Comic Sans Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 7) Green Day has 14 transitional songs. They are Chump/Longview, Brain Stew/Jaded, Uptight/Last Ride In, and Jinx/Haushinka, Holiday/Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Are We the Waiting/St. Jimmy, and Give Me Novacaine/She's a Rebel. Christian's inferno/Last Night On Earth and The Static Age/21 Guns too. 8) The corner of Stuart and the Ave. is the corner of Stuart Street and Telegraph Avenue in Berkley, California. This is correct. I checked it with my Ipad. OMG i discovered this awesome song yesterday, I sang "Standing on the corner of Stuart and The Avenue" all the day, and I wondered where it was and now I discovered it!!! :runaround: :runaround: :runaround:
Demetra Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I'm not 100% sure about any of these and english is not even my first language. But here are my indications: 4) i think Mike also plays the piano >>>>http://www.facebook.com/photo.php? fbid=420083821387973&set=a.117126171683741.15397.105031012893257&type=1&theater 14) they also like No Doubt (if you consider them ska and not pop) 37) faeries ---> fairies and ghosly ---> ghostly Songs section: 13) intro 14) done 15) am
JDookie Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Christian's inferno/Last Night On Earth and The Static Age/21 Guns too. Now that you make me think about that, Last of the American Girls and Murder City should be listed, too. I only cared about grammar and not about what it was saying
Comic Sans Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Now that you make me think about that, Last of the American Girl and Murder City should be listed, too. I only cared about grammar and not about what it was saying Right. I forgot that.
greendepent Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 "32) On 1039/smoothed out slappy hours the band recorded and mixed the record in two day and only cost $675 to record and sold nearly a million copies." Here is common mistake around all Green Day fans. 1039/SOSH is compilation made by Lookout, the real album is 39/Smooth. This facts are taking about the album, not the comp
localinsomniac Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 New copies of Dookie are made without Ernie on the back. That's because Sesame Street threatened to sue Green Day. More likely that it was PBS/Children's Television Workshop Five of Green Day's mainstream albums all begin with drums. Now 6 out of 8 One #29, the old drummer is named John Kriftmeyer. Should be 'Kiffmeyer.'
fukingcounterstrike Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I KNOW EVERYTHING THERE S TO KNOW ABOUT GREENDAY, including Tre's siamese twin which he killed in the womb and absorbed and is located right on the top of his head hidden under all that crazy hair of his. Bet YOU didn't even know that Andres
Sarcasm Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Billie doesn't have a soul. He's a ginger. Put it in there, bitch.
gerardsangel4977 Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 3) New copies of Dookie are made without Ernie on the back. That's because Sesame Street threatened to sue Green Day. ^It would probably better to say that the original copies of Dookie featured Ernie on them, but (he? it?) was later removed. 4) Billie also plays the harmonica, mandolin, drums, and the piano. Mike also plays the farfisa, guitar, and the drums. Tre also plays the guitar and the accordian Billie also plays the bass. There is photographic evience. Plus The Boo. Actually, come to think of it, a bit on The Boo would probably make a nice fun fact 5) When Green Day was recording songs for Insomniac, they were trying to think of an appropriate name for the song Stuck With Me. The band recorded the song now called "Do Da Da" around the same time, and that song was originally called "Stuck With Me", because those words actually appear in that song. But, there was a studio mix-up, and someone labeled the third track on Insomniac "Stuck With Me". When the band discovered the error, they felt the name was appropriate for the song and kept it. Later, they decided to release the real "Stuck With Me" as a b-side, so they gave it the nonsensical name "Do Da Da". Getting out my own grammar nazi skills here, since no one's mentioned this one yet: There shouldn't be a comma in front of "because" or after "but". 6) The album Insomniac is called with that name because Billie Joe didn't sleep at night. His son (Joey) cried all night, so Billie would write a lot of songs. The title also came from Winston Smith (the guy who made the artwork for Insomniac) - when Billie asked him how long it took to work on it, Winston replied "I'd spent the last 38 hours working on the assembly of the composition. He asked me how it was possible for me to stay awake that long and I said, "It's easy for me. I'm an insomniac". "is called with that name"? Really, guys? Also, quotes within a quote utilize single quotation marks: 'It's easy for me. I'm an Insomniac.' And the full quote needs to be closed after the period as well. 8) The corner of Stuart and the Ave. is the corner of Stuart Street and Telegraph Avenue in Berkley, California. Berkeley** 9) When Green Day first got started, their tour bus was an old bookmobile van that Tre's dad bought and fixed up. He drove them around show to show. A bookmobile is a specific vehicle, like an ice cream truck. Therefore, writing "van" afterward is unnecessary. 11) On the Insomniac cover, there are three skulls which are supposed to be the 3 skulls of the 3 members of Green Day, and in order to see the third one you have to look in the flames and hold the paper at an angle in order to see it properly. There should be a comma before "which", as well as after "the third one". You said "in order to see it" twice. And, given the sheer amount of clauses here, you should probably forego the compound sentence and just split it into two more digestible ones. 13) In the "Kerplunk" inlay, it also thanks Adrienne Nesser, now Billie's wife. ^"who is now" 15) Billie, Mike, and Tre did all of their own stunts in the "Walking Contradiction" video including a scene were Billie almost gets hit by a car. Billie said "Tr scared me into it. I was so scared..I thought I was gonna die right there with all the cameras on me..Well I can think of worse ways to die". The intersection where most of the action happens in the "Walking Contradiction" video is Centre St. and 7th St. in Los Angeles. I'm not sure if those quotes are attempting to utilize periods or ellipses, but ".." means nothing. So I'll let you all figure it out. 16) In the "Kerplunk" credits, they thank some guy named "Brainstew". I believe "Brainstew" was the nickname for James Washburn. But I'm not 100% positive. Anyone else have a sharper memory than I? I'm also starting to think that all of the facts regarding the Kerplunk liner notes should either be combined or, at least, placed together. 18) The 'My Adventure with Green Day' story in 'Kerplunk!' says it was written by 'Laurie L.' The name Laurie L is actually a tribute to Laurence Livermoore of Lookout records. It's not a tribute. It was written *by* Lawrence Livermore (which has only one 'o', btw) 29) When original drummer John Kriftmeyer (aka Al Sobrante) left Green Day Kiffmeyer** 33) You can cut up Green Day stickers to read "Gay Nerd." In case you wondering. In case you were wondering. 39) On Green Day's cover of Operation Ivy's "Knowledge" the part at the beginning that is said backwards says "Lets get personal" when played forwards. Should be a comma after "Knowledge" 40) Good Riddance (Time of your Life) was the official theme for the Golf PGA Tour in 1998. Quotes around the song title, please. 47) On Common Riders first EP, Billie Joe had played lead on it and sang. Common Rider was Jesse Michaels (ex- OPIV) last band. I'm assuming you meant "played lead guitar" 49) In the special features of the Social Distortion's Live in Orange County DVD, Mike Ness brings his kids up on stage and his son is wearing a Warning t-shirt. It's just Social Distortion. No "the". Also, there should be a comma before "and". 50) "Brain Stew" can be seen in the Green Day: Behind The Music under the name James Washburn. Answered my own question! 53) In Longview, after they say "Call me pathetic, call me what you will", you can hear something in the background. The "something" is "What you will!" [To Be Continued....]3) In the Minority video, Billie Joe is running around with the cape on and Mike throws a hand to trip him. The hand is given the peace sign. When it hits him it nocks off the pointer and gives the middle finger. Shouls be a comma after "the cape on", as well as after, "hits him". Also, "giving" not "given". And knocks off** 6) In the music video of "When I Come Around", midway through the video you can see present back up guitarist Jason White with his then-girlfriend Should be a comma after "through the video".2) "Haushinka" was originally written for Dookie, but at the time they didnt like the sound of it. So they excluded it from the album then when Nimrod came they decided to include it. This could easily just be left as "'Haushinka' was originally written for Dookie." Could even put in a fact that the demo version is in with the Dookie demos. But the rest is kind of common sense. 4) On Dookie, the song "Chump" ends with the "Longview" beat which goes into song 4 (Longview) like Chump never ended. SInce there is an entire fact devoted to listing connected tracks, this seems redundant to mention. 6) At the end of the song Walking Alone on Nimrod you can hear a glass break and someone says something like "its not like one thing......". Quotes around song title. 10) At the very begining of "Going to Pasalacqua", Before "Here we go again...." if you turn it up and listen closely in the silence he says "Here we go again" before he actually says it. beginning*, before* Should be commas before "if" and "he says". 11) In Brain Stew after the drums start playing Billie Joe makes a noise kinda like "uhhhh" but you can barely hear it. QUotes around song title. Commas after "Brain Stew" and "playing", as well as before "but". 12) On Brain Stew, right after the verse when the drums coem in, if you listen closely, you can hear Billie Joe say "oh" then "yeah" under his breath. Pretty sure this is the exact same fact as number 11. 17) On the song Hold On (Warning) someone screams 'Hope' in the background after Billie says 'A cry for hope'. Song title in quotes.
gerardsangel4977 Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Now, for the fun part!! Stuff to add: "Rusty James" was named after the main character in the S. E. Hinton novel, "Rumble Fish". "She", "Stuart and the Ave.", "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)", "Whatsername" and "Amanda" were all written about the same girl. "Platypus (I Hate You)" is about Tim Yohannon from Maximum Rock 'n' Roll. He died from lymphoma in April 1998, six months after Nimrod was released. "X-Kid" is about Billie and Mike's childhood friend, Brando, who committed suicide in 2009 (I'm not 100% sure on the year here. It was either late 2009 or early 2010. Anyone else remember?). Brando can be seen in the VH1 special "Driven". Billie Joe sends a member of Green Day's crew out to buy bootleg Green Day merchandise from vendors when the band is on tour. He keeps a collection of the strangest items. That's all I've got for now...will add more as I think of them. And agree that we really need to go back through Billie Joe's twitter feed.
porksoda Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 The guy who yells "What you will" in the background of Longview is the band's old friend Eggplant.
Firecracker Lell Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 I think the fact/quote that Billie Joe said: " I masturbated 3 times yesterday, was it fun? About as much fun as I'm gonna get when my wife's not around " can be included in the quotes section ( if it hasn't already ) & if it's worthy
Sarcasm Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Write in that Tre always does something fucked up at Letterman? Seems facktish enough.
