Hi fellow GDCers! My name is Alissa. Some of you may know me, others may not. I joined GDC earlier this summer, and although I'm still pretty new, I'm definitely hooked.

I'm a senior journalism student studying at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Each week I write an opinion column for our student newspaper, The BG News, about anything that's interesting me at the time. This week, I wrote how awesome the GDC community is, and I wanted to share it with all of you!

You can read it here: http://www.bgnews.co...1a4bcf887a.html

As you'll read if you click that link, I'm so happy to be a part of this awesome community. Even though I haven't been here long, you all have been a great, welcoming family. I look forward to celebrating all the upcoming Green Day news with you as the albums are released! :)

(P.S. I PMed Andres about starting this thread and he said it was fine to share it with all of you!)

aww that's nice :)

a lot of friendships have been made on here; I know I met my best friend on GDC

Good luck with senior year by the way!

(P.S. I think this should go in Words I Might Have Ate maybe? Since you wrote it and it's not really something about Green Day itself)

You know an article is good if it makes you laugh and smile a few times :)

I'm new too here, and this is exactly how I feel!

Thanks for sharing your article!

You're surrounded by idiots hahaha!

That was a nice read  But one thing isn't quite true: The Idiot Club wasn't named after American Idiot, it was called like that before the album even came out. I don't know though where it originated.

True. There was one of those CD books I had a long time ago - one of the unofficial, unauthorized things - and they mention the IC. The basic sentiment was, "If you want to join, you're an idiot. Send us 20 bucks and see what you get."

So, maybe playing on fanboy-/girl-ism?

Great article! Very well written! :)

That was very well written, I enjoyed reading it and can obviously relate to most of what you wrote about! Awesome

Alissa, I LOVE your article! It's really well-written and captures many of the best things about being part of this great community. You mention a lot of things that I totally relate to, like feeling that "many people don't share my music taste" and that I'm the minority. Most of my friends don't like the same music I do, and certainly not to the same level. It's great being able to share this space with others who have a common interest, and be able to discuss all the earth-shattering news that comes out that no one but us will care about.

I'm glad you've made (real life) friends so fast! I haven't met anyone here yet outside of GDC, but hopefully that will happen once the tour starts. :)

Good luck with school too! I just graduated in June. I did Communication as well as English, so kind of like Journalism. No I'm getting my master's, and I'll be done next year.

You know what, I always thought it was because of American Idiot too. I just assumed it because it made sense. Then I heard recently that it was the Idiot Club before AI, and I was like, "What, impossible!" But it's true. Crazy! I wonder how it actually got its name... and when...

Thank you!

(And I wasn't sure... Andres just said put it in Green Day Chat, but if they want to move it, I don't mind!)

Love the opening of the article!

I couldn't figure out how to start it and then it just came to me one day while I was sitting in class! I love random inspiration!

 Whoops. Guess I should have done my fact checking a little more thoroughly... I guess that's what happens when you assume...

Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Like I said, a friend from The BG News (Mar) urged me to join the forum, and after I did, she introduced me to some of the Midwest-area GDCers she met up with. We had met up a couple times before and have since then (like at the AI show in Detroit last January). So it was just kind of like a chain reaction. I'm sure you'll meet up with some GDCers soon!

Congrats on graduating! :) I'm done in December.

whoah. this is news to me.

but I don't understand why... I mean, people get the reference now, after AI... but why would GD fans randomly call themselves idiots?

Like I said, I just assumed... which is a journalism no-no, so I guess I deserve to be wrong then.

Now I'll probably just devote the next week or so to investigating the origin of IC's name.

I think maybe the band called us idiots? Idk.

Great article!

You express some things that some (or most) of us feel, like, being able to express your excitment about some Green Day news and people here wil understand and celebrate with you! This forum is the only place I can be Green Day obsessed and people won't whine about it! Love GDC! l

Aww, thank you so much! It means a lot. I hope to make a career out of it, so I've been practicing. :)

Aw, this is a really awesome article. I feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I really appreciate how you've shown that forums aren't full of stereotypical internet nerds, because more people need to realise this! We're all genuine people with opinions and lives and it's really awesome how you've pointed that out.

Thank you! That's exactly the point I wanted to make! I met someone at work who actually is on the forum here and he and I deal with the same kind of people all the time who are like "You're on a forum and talking to strangers? How weird." And it's not weird in the least bit.

Gross. And you are not allowed to mention my existence without paying me royalties for referencing my perfection obviously. :)

You're the best. Thanks for getting me on here. Can't wait for our listening party on Tuesday!
