ColinOr Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Are there any Green Day b-sides that you think are better than the A-side single they were released with? Personally, I think Too Much Too Soon is far superior to it's A-side American Idiot.
Sanity Loan Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 That might be the ONE that I agree with. I'm sure a lot of people will say "Hearts Collide" or "Lights Out" vs. "Know Your Enemy" - which is totally bogus.
Sarcasm Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 ^ didn't like either of those. Shoplifter and Gouvernator on the other hands, bumthrust.
Femme Gauche Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Hearts Collide and Lights Out are great, but I can see why they were not album tracks... Same for Too Much Too Soon and Shoplifter. Not just cause they don't fit with the stories, either. They're good songs, yes, but not... super Green Day material. Governator and Favorite Son too. But I really like "American Idiot" anyway. And I don't actually think "Know Your Enemy" is bad; I think sometimes repetition and simplicity give strength to a song. But, y'know, that's just me.
Iop Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 "Hearts Collide" is actually a great song, but yeah. I'll have to go with "Shoplifter". It's also my favourite Green Day b-side of all times. AND, (and won't make any friends here, i assume) i like "Do Da Da" better than "Brain Stew". But that may be just because i've heard "Brain Stew" too often.
BringMoreKnives Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Lights Out kicks way more ass than Know Your Enemy, in my opinion.

Fun and all that. But it all just feels like more "side project" than "Green Day" to me XD.
Heather. Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I don't like Lights Out that much, Hearts Collide is OK.... I would have to agree that TMTS is really good, and if I had to choose between listening to that and AI I'd choose TMTS, but that doesn't mean it's *better* and it'd be hard to argue the huge significance of releasing AI as a single. I love Do Da Da. I have no idea which B-sides go with which A-sides so I don't even know how to have this discussion Maybe if someone made a list.
perfectpitchrob Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Hearts Collide is better than Know Your Enemy IMO. If the album wasn't supposed to be a rock opera, then I could easily see the single being reversed with Hearts Collide on the album and KYE as a B-Side.

KYE is a below average song (aka shit), but it's the perfect song to put on that album and, objectively made a lot of sense as a first single.
BringMoreKnives Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Hearts Collide sounds sorta Foxboro-ish to me, and I think it would work better on a Foxboro album than a Green Day album.

frunsi Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 KYE is pretty mediocre. Lights Out and Hearts Collide are far superior. plus, i like Desensitized better than Good Riddance.
SamMacs Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Lights Out & Hearts Collide are better than KYE imo. Other than that I think that there aren't any b sides (even though there are a lot of great ones) that are better than the a side.
Todd Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I love basket case, but on the wagon and dont wanna fall in love kick ass.Suffocate is better than warning
Sofouska Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Favorite Son I know you'll all tell me "But there does that fit in the story?!" but this song is amazing Lights Out & Hearts Collide are better than KYE imo. Other than that I think that there aren't any b sides (even though there are a lot of great ones) that are better than the a side. For some reason, I've always disliked those two songs. Too much love KYE, even if it's simple, it's badass.
billiejoephil Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Favorite Son is indeed awesome. Love it!

greendepent Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 I have to say that the Nimrod B-sides are very good. Good Riddance is the uber song for Green Day, but Suffocate and Desensitized clearly deserved to be in Nimrod. They are blast. I don't say that songs are better than Good Riddance, 'cause they are different kind of songs. I can't compare them.
Clayish Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Lights Out and Favorite Son could have easily been on 21st Century and American Idiot respectively.

Dont forget that some copies of nimrod include the four b sides
Idiotic Tendency... Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Just because you think that doesn't make it a fact. Been wanting to say that to Matt for ages.
greendepent Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 and Espionage beats the shit out of Last Ride In. they had lots of great material for nimrod, and they even put 18 songs on it, but that wasn't enough space for all the great songs they had recorded... They are both instrumentals, and Green Day wanted to make some random experiment with these songs. Last Ride In makes a good job cutting the album in two. And is a great song to jam. I played that song with my band is quite funny making solos and laughing about how we suck while playing. Espionage has the Austin Powers vibe and always think that song is a huge parody to James Bond theme song. And Espionage do the work flawless. I'd wish that Nimrod has 25 songs (Record + b-sides and some other unreleased)
frunsi Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 just finished listening to nimrod and i must say that Last Ride In is my least favourite on the album BUT in the album context it's awesome. it creates the genius moment of slow, relaxing surf music and suddenly you hear tre yelling "1, 2, 3, 4" and the typical fast, energetic pop-punk of Jinx kicks in. that's one of the reasons why i like nimrod so much, extreme style changings between the songs (Walking Alone/Reject, Take Back/King For A Day) and Last Ride In is the perfect song or that. Espionage should have been somewhere on the album though
