Wow I never would've imagined a soul version of that song! I think it sounds great. He did it again here from around 8:10 Shame there isn't a better quality recording or a studio version, I'd love that.

But that's not necessarily proof that they'll be performing, because I remember there was a Grammys commercial this year that had footage of Billie Joe from 2005 in it, and obviously they weren't at the Grammys this year. It's much more likely to be true that they're performing for the VMAs though, because they have obvious promo ahead of them and Billboard said they would possibly be at the VMAs. Plus I think if MTV felt like using random artists that weren't performing to get people's attentions, they'd pick Beiber or something, not Billie Joe.

This. There was an advert of World Stage on MTV from Malta and there was a part of KYE from Green Day's World Stage. MTV uses many times different footage unconnected with the show.
