Poison Glass Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 (Alright! I'll preface this by saying I'm assuming that I'm posting this in the right area, and that if I'm not, I would love for someone to tell me where to move it to.) So, I'm going to assume you ladies and gents have heard of the Westboro Baptist Church - a hate group based in Topeka, Kansas known for picketing the funerals of soldiers and celebrities. If you haven't heard of the WBC, Wikipedia has a short little blurb that will help: "The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is an American, Independent Baptist church known for its extreme ideologies, especially those against homosexuality, and its protest activities, which include picketing funerals of American servicemen and desecrating the American flag.[3] The church is widely described as a hate group and is monitored as such by the Anti-Defamation League and Southern Poverty Law Center. It is headed by Fred Phelps and consists primarily of members of his large family; in 2011, the church stated that it had about 40 members. The church is headquartered in a residential neighborhood on the west side of Topeka about three miles west of the Kansas State Capitol. Its first public service was held on the afternoon of Sunday, November 27, 1955." "Alright." I'm sure you're thinking. "But Poison Glass, what on Earth does this have to do with Green Day?" To that, I say"Just wait a few more sentences." What (on Earth) this silly little church has to do with Green Day is that one of their few members, Megan Phelps (Twitter here) is, in fact, a Green Day fan. Now, considering the huge conflict of messages here (Green Day is not known for being overly conservative. ), I figured this was an interesting enough topic of discussion. Here, my fellow Green Day fans, is her mention of the band: (I'd skip to 12:30 if you only want to hear the Green Day related bit.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fm8diBINdMg So...discuss! I think it's interesting that Green Day's music is apparently so damned catchy that even the WBC likes it. [side note: While we're on the topic of Westboro, they've also made two Green Day...ah, song parodies. Prepare your ears.]
pieterv Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 I don't know too much about this topic, so I'm sorry if I start of the discussion with wrong statements but I'm going to do it anyway. Aren't they widely believed to only do the sh*t they do just so they can sue people that oppose them in illegal ways while they carefully make sure to be legal. If that's the case they're just wearing a mask for the sake of money while hiding their true opinions, in this case the true opinion could have been shown by accident(?) That or it's just that they're stupid and don't get the message or don't care about anything except the music sounds good.
Poison Glass Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 What. the. actual. fuck. no That's the same reaction I had! [...] Aren't they widely believed to only do the sh*t they do just so they can sue people that oppose them in illegal ways while they carefully make sure to be legal. [...] That's a rumour that's been going for ages, but as far as I've looked into it, they've never actually taken any legal action involving themselves. (Several of them are lawyers, but for others.) Oddly enough, despite the fact that they spend a lot of resources doing their picketing and such, they also refused to take donations. Thank God for Green Day! I think we can all agree on that. Tell her to fuck off. If only I could.
WhatserKinx Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 What? Really? How can one group of people be so judgemental, I'm sorry but "God hates fags" "God hates you". How can these people believe this. I actually don't know what to say to this.

The awful part is that they've got a bunch of children who they're training to be just like the rest of the family.
DoodleBob Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 The last thing we need is someone like her representing Green Day's fanbase.
WhatserKinx Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 Yeah, it's pretty mind-blowing. The awful part is that they've got a bunch of children who they're training to be just like the rest of the family. That's horrible. I mean "from conception all children have sinned" how the hell can anyone see any logic to this argument? People are entitled to their own beliefs but when they are shoving homophobic veiws in peoples faces that's when they cross the line. The last thing we need is someone like her representing Green Day's fanbase. I couldn't agree more.
BringMoreKnives Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Oh god. Why. I really don't know what to say to this.
frunsi Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 this shows that green day's music is so damn great that even the most fucked up people like it.
Sixtrix Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 It's funny that when she finally names a band that she enjoys listening to, she says it in a way of doubt. I bet she's fully aware that her f-ed up beliefs does not completely fit with the lyrics Billie Joe writes. So what's the deal here exactly? Are those people brainwashed to believe what they believe?
Rush guy Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 But, but, we don't want her to like Green Day... The fanbase is sizable already and full of awesome people....
Poison Glass Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 Yes. This is tame for them. They were in Joplin after the tornadoes. They went to Louisiana after Katrina all to yell in to the cameras that it's (all the shit they say). They are a disgusting group of "people". Pure animal and should be pitied because much like their children, they too were once innocent. However, they are now old enough to learn to think like a human being and if they don't, fuck em. The thing is, it's so hard for them to see what they're doing as "wrong" since it's the only way of life they've ever been exposed to - even the adults.
DoodleBob Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 The fire that "burns today" has always burned unfortunately. All the dogs that never learned to breathe, ARE BREEDING and they are teaching their offspring. This. I like this statement.
San Miguel Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 The thing is, it's so hard for them to see what they're doing as "wrong" since it's the only way of life they've ever been exposed to - even the adults. i guess this is true to a degree, but as adults they should be able to think for themselves a bit more
Poison Glass Posted July 13, 2012 Author Posted July 13, 2012 i guess this is true to a degree, but as adults they should be able to think for themselves a bit more The thing is, you were raised in an environment where, even if, say, your parents/whoever raised you didn't encourage you to think for yourself, you eventually heard about this whole "thinking for yourself" bit. One of the children of WBC members didn't like the fact that Fred Phelps (leader of the church, if you didn't know) way physically abusing anyone of the children of the house who didn't agree with him, so he escaped at age 18. Even then, despite the fact that he wasn't a member of the church any more, it still scared him. His name is Nathan Phelps and this is his website, if you want to read a bit more from someone who was actually there. I think we lost a bit of the Green Day focus here, but this thread boils down to the fact that the WBC is bad and Green Day is good.
Nuclear Family Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 I guess it just goes to show how much of your upbringing and the development of your perspective on the world determines what kind of person you'll become. It shows a lot.
Fuzz Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 I still got excited to hear her mention Green Day. Yup.
