This week’s Song of the Week is the snotty Brat, track 2 off Green Day’s 4th album Insomniac, released in 1995.

Brat’s lyrics are all about being a deadbeat kid of well-off parents, who rather than going out and earning himself his own savings is waiting for his parents to die so that he can simply inherit theirs. The song can be seen as a sort of cynical social commentary towards the cold, spoilt attitude that some kids with wealthy parents are perceived to have. Musically, Brat has a simple, classic Green Day sound and structure, much like the majority of the songs on Insomniac.

This great live footage of Brat was recorded in November of 2000 for Much Music in Toronto, Canada.

Lyrics:

Mom and Dad don't look so hot these days

They're getting over the hill

Death is closing in and catching up

As far as I can tell

Got a plan of action and cold blood

And it smells of defiance

I'll just wait for Mom and Dad to die

And get my inheritance

Now I want more

'Cause I'm getting bored

And I'm going nowhere fast

I was once filled with doubt

Now it's all figured out

Nothing good can last

Crows feet and rot are setting in

And time is running out

My parent's income interest rate

Is gaining higher clout

I'm a snot nosed slob without a job

And I know I damn well should

Mom and dad don't look so hot these days

But my future's looking good

Now I want more

'Cause I'm getting bored

And I'm going nowhere fast

I was once filled with doubt

Now it's all figured out

Nothing good can last

Powerful drums and catchy rhythm. Me gusta.

Ah, the perfect song for the pre-bank collapse children with parents with a shitton of money in their 401(k)s. Love this song. It's short, sweet and to the point.

But I hate the Internet, because one time on Tumblr, I saw someone quote "Mom and dad don't look so hot these days they're getting over the hill" and posted this gif below the lyrics:

And as a result, I can't listen to this song now without picturing Stephen dancing. Not complaining, obviously, but the meanness of the song is kind of undercut by this gif.

Powerful, energetic and the criticism in the lyrics. Awesome!

One of the more fun songs of Insomniac, I'm glad it's there to make the album less angry and whiny.

less angry!? have you listened to the lyrics? :P

the entire song is a somewhat angry attack on worthless snobby rich kids....

It's not from my favorites of Insomniac but it has funny lyrics, and it's also funny the fact that Billie thinks his kids would sing this to him some day...(not cool)

I know every lyric from the band by heart. so, yes :P It's not an angry song at all. The lyrics just describes lazyness and a rotten ambition to get money simply by waiting, and he doesn't care if his parents die, as long as he gets it. Greed isn't anger, you're mixing up ypur 7 sins x3

'I'm snot nosed slob without a job'-classic line!

Oh Brat. Haha such a great song and great choice for this week

This isn't a song I listen to much, but I do like it! I didn't really realize what it was about so that was my fun fact for the day :D

No I’m not. He’s angry about snobby rich kids, hence sings about it. Anger doesn’t have to be directly expressed in the lyrics to make it an angry song. Also, anger is not a sin.

^^^ Exactly. At the same time, it also carries an undertone of "why can't I have that too, the world isn't faiiiiiirrrrrrr!!!!" jealousy. This one's beautiful, pure punk rock at its finest, with an amazing bass line to boot. :)

I think this is also the song where Billie's Insomniac-era sneering, snarky, "nyah nyah nyah" vocals are the most difficult to understand, especially set against Mike's stronger-than-usual bass line. In trying to learn this song I've butchered so many of the lyrics to this one it's ridiculous -- just a few of the worst examples:

"I was once filled with doubt" -> "I was once so wiped out"

"Nothing good can last" -> "Nothing could get worse"

In his defence, a snot nosed slob without a job would sound snotty, so I think his vocals work really well on this song.

Although I’m with you on the “filled with doubt” line. I think I remember having to google that one...

The lyrics are still genius though.

I think my favourite thing besides the lyrics though is the upbeat rhythm and the fact that it’s just a simple three chord song. It reminds me of Do Da Da in that respect, which I also love :)

love love love this song.... is one of the most importants for me....

because when I knew Green Day the first time, I bought the cd single "minority" that was including brat live.... I remember I listened to this like 50 times in the same night... and I bought Insomniac only knowing that song that I loved... and then bought also the other albums in very short time, without knowing any song....best choices ever

I love this song, it reminds me most of my friends who have everything from their parents, and then I think about me, I've earned everything from my own work, so I feel proud :D

This would be a hell of an opener once they go on a tour not supporting an album. It really doesnt get talked about that much but it has that classic green day sound that everyone talks about. I like it alot and i will have to listen to insomniac again since i have not in a while!
