Technical Aspects of New Album

Now, I know we only have 4 videos out so far to judge off of...but I noticed a few things.

I noticed they are taking a very vintage approach to this album. They have a lot of footage of them playing with older amps and guitars, they are playing all together and they have the one video with all those classic cars, motorcycles, skate boards, etc. Now I could be looking way into this, but could they be pulling a Foo Fighters and be recording ANALOG on TAPE? Like I said, I could be looking way too much into this but I think they would sound just awesome on tape instead of the over produced 21CB sound.

Any thoughts on how this album is gonna be recorded?

Yeah man that would be sick. I'm looking at the inside of my Wasting Light album case right now and the picture of them all facing one another wile jamming reminds me a lot of the videos that have been released recently. And yeah I noticed the vintage equipment too. It's really rad, especially Billie's vintage Gretsch's. But anyway, yeah I could totally see Green Day pulling a Foo Fighters this time around. A lot of the new songs that leaked a while ago did sound like straight up rock and roll tunes so maybe they'll go completely old school. It would sound awesome.

I like the "retro" shit. Not that it's really retro, it's not ancient. Except Billie, he's a vintage piece of man.

I'm hoping the album leans more towards the Warning sound than Nimrod. I've seen people hoping that it will sound like Nimrod.

But all together I'm rooting for them going a completely NEW direction, instead of trying to copy a sound they've already created 12 or 15 years ago.

As far as I can tell, I see them using a whole lot of noise on this one. Particularly in a song like "Let Yourself Go."

I think it would be tempting to assume that they are going to be experimental on this album, and we'll likely see abortions like "Last Ride In" and the like. I disagree with that contention however, because from what I've heard, these songs are Straight. Up. Rock 'n' Roll!

I imagine there is going to be a bit of analogue taping--probably mostly for the guitars and bass. The drums almost have to be recorded digitally though---to give it that Tre Cool stadium feel. You can also bet on Billie's voice being recorded digitally.

But for a song like "Let Yourself Go" I imagine they will use analogue almost exclusively--similar to a "Party Poison" kind of theme. :)

I sure hope they're not just going for a vintage rock n roll look lol. I hope they also follow that with their sound. Less heavy full guitar sound, but as the same time a lot of noise haha.

I don't know really mind if they record on tape or not, I felt like the Foo Fighters album was more of a protest rather than to achieve a certain sound. I wasn't overly impressed by the sound on that album, it didn't stand out as too special for me, but I liked that they did it. Just don't think GD needs to bother with it (plus I don't want to have to read the hate from Foo's fans after GD "copies" them, ugh haha)

If the tone of everything is exactly how it is on Nimrod I'll be happy. In my opinion the Nimrod 'sound' is spot on for Green Day. Their recent stuff has too many slides and too much 'gain' on the guitars. The drums have been fine since Insomniac really so can't see them messing that up this time. Just please no effects on Billie's voice, except the odd line.

Playing together could be rehearsal. Plus, usually bands play the track together, and then they hear that track in-ear when they record the instruments solo (instead of just a metronome tick). It's a way to give them the 'feeling' of playing together, when they actually aren't.

Agreed. 21st century breakdown just sounded way to over produced for them.

Very overproduced. Granted it was a 'big' album but so was American Idiot and the production on that was far from overproduced.

I prefer overproduced to boring actually. The sound of 21stCBD is preferable over the Kerplunk sound, even though some of the Kerplunk songs are much more dear to me.

I see what you mean by playing together instead of a metronome. But who knows? We shall see!
