Heather. Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I'm not talking about your FAVORITE songs and your LEAST (although I bet you'll mention those), I'm asking you to think about the songs that most people think are really good, and decide if you can objectively say "I can't think of any moment in this song that is flawed" For example, Jesus of Suburbia is, many of you will agree, their greatest effort. It's an incredible 9-minute song, but there are moments I stop and think, "But what if they did MORE here, or what if this part was a little bit different"... It's not that I would want to change the song, but I always felt like it could evolve even further because of how dynamic it is, that it was never quite 'finished.' That's probably more of a testament to the power of the song than it is a flaw, but I think it's worth considering. After seeing the musical, I can't help but always be a little disappointed with the album versions of 21 Guns, LNOE, and She's a Rebel. Those all really came to life on stage and makes you think Green Day didn't reach the final umph with those tracks. Same for KYE. I think Holiday is a complete song. I think Walking Contradiction reaches its own maximum potential. What songs come to your mind? (It's most fun to be critical of your absolute favorites, and maybe you'll find some credit in those songs you don't like as much) I don't really care for Hitchin' A Ride, but I think that song is COMPLETE. Y'know? Hope I make sense.
DoodleBob Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 When Green Day does 21 Guns live, I love how they do the bridge. Just Billie Joe and the piano. I wish the studio version was that way.
Satan Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Homecoming. I love that song, but I can't stand the ending. It's literally 2 minutes of "home, we're coming home again" and I think they could have ended that song much better.
InvaderPhantom Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Very good topic! When I listen to some songs, I actually like to imagine how cool it would have been if they added something. Especially after the musical! There are some things from the musical that I would have loved in the actual songs. For example: In Jesus of Suburbia: "We are the stories and disciples of... the Jesus of Suburbia!" I think it would have been kickass if the the "Jesus of Suburbia" part was like in the musical where the instruments stop and the words are shouted as gang vocals! "City of the damned, lost children with dirty faces today, no one really seems to... caaaaaaaaaaaaaaare!" Kind of hard to describe xD I think it would have been great if Billie sang the "caaare" part like he did in the Awesome as Fuck DVD, with his voice going higher and higher. Like this. For some reason I think "from New York City to the middle east" would sound better than "from Anaheim to the middle east". I have no idea why I never liked the name Anaheim. I never saw the point of the low quality drums as the intro for Extraordinary Girl. I think it would have been awesome if Ha Ha You're Dead was sung by Mike only The saxophone from the live performances of The Static Age sooo should have been in the studio version! To be honest, when I listened to The Static Age for the first time I was like "meh" but the sax from the AAF live dvd blew me away. No pun intended And now, whenever I listen to The Static Age on 21stCB I really think the sax is missing. The piano from the AAF performance of 21 Guns would have made the studio version even more amazing. I think a tuba could have fit into the intro of Viva La Gloria? (Little Girl). Or Tre's accordion! In Restless Heart Syndrome, when it goes "know your enemy", I imagine how cool it would be if really distorted guitars hit in. I mean, there already are crazy guitars during that part, but I imagine really shredding, fucked up guitars with Billie screaming in the background. In Letterbomb, I think it would have been great if it was like the AAF bonus track version, with the instruments stopping during "Where will all the martyrs go when the virus cures itself, and where will we all go when it's too late" - and then violently kicking in after that That's all I can think of right now. But keep in mind, this is all just nitpicking! It's not even that, since I don't criticize the songs, I just imagine how even cooler they would have been if they added a little bit of something. I just realized I mostly talked about the newer songs. I guess I really can't find a way to make the classic songs "better", since they are musically way more minimalistic than the modern songs and are "perfect" in their way. The modern songs however are already so full of instruments and ideas that I find more ways to add something kickass. I guess that's a good thing?
Kristy_TheIdiot Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Homecoming. I love that song, that I can't stand the ending. It's literally 2 minutes of "home, we're coming home again" and I think they could have ended that song much better. Nothing to add. It's a wonderful song, but I don't love that part
classof12 Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I really think that JOS is the perfect song, also other ones like Good Riddance and St.Jimmy (but just played live) but I think BOBD could have been SO much better.
InvaderPhantom Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Misery was written by Billie, Mike and Tre, right? I think it would have been cool if they sang the respective part they wrote, if that makes sense.
WestboundSign! Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Letterbomb is definitely one of my favorite songs and I've always thought it was perfection. But after hearing the AAF version I always think it would have been cool if the instrumental stopped during the lines "Where will all the martyrs go when the virus cures itself? And where will we all go when it's too late?". And then: BAM! This live version was just awesome and I'd love the studio version to be this way. As InvaderPhantom has already said I also like the "Wake up!" in the musical version of Letterbomb.

Brigister Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Private Ale couldn't be better, maybe just a bit cleaner recording, but whatever. I wish its live version had the scream too.
ScatteredPictures Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Every second of Letterbomb is perfect in my opinion.
Brigister Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Every second of Letterbomb is perfect in my opinion. Oh how could I disagree with this, I love Letterbomb.
Heather. Posted January 22, 2012 Author Posted January 22, 2012 Actually I've always maintained that Good Riddance could do for another verse. Like, I could easily make something really cheesy up off the top of my head to fit in that song. It just would have added to how much society would love it for the cheese factor. Sing it! So remember the good times And don't look back on pain You'll be living life better And always dance in rain SO make the best of this test... Tada. Longer song.
JDookie Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Every second of Letterbomb is perfect in my opinion. I agree!! To me, Letterbomb is perfection. Everytime I listen to it, I have a feeling of completeness that no other song can give me: it has got an introduction (a song with an introduction? ), chorus, bridge, strophe, even a conclusion! After it finish, I always feel satisfied! A song that doesn't give me enough is Jinx... I only listen to it with Haushinka! And I'm waiting for the definitive version of Nuclear Family, but what I hear now it's a song that misses something in my opinion...
Sarcasm Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I think Misery is the perfect song. It's just so different, catchy and funny. And the little story it tells sounds like a paper back :3 I love it, it's one of my all time GD songs! A song that could be better is like... you know, everything from Slappy Hours I like Panic Song, but I'm not fond of the 1 minute 30 opening. I want the lyrics and hooks. I know GD can play music, they don't have to prove it before they start the singing.
green day is Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 When Green Day does 21 Guns live, I love how they do the bridge. Just Billie Joe and the piano. I wish the studio version was that way. That's doable, considering we have the multitracks of that song. Mind linking me to a performance where they do that?
beejeezee Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 A song that could be better is like... you know, everything from Slappy Hours You can't make the classics better. The only one I would change is KFAD . . . it doesn't sound right without Shout to me.
Hedwig Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I like Panic Song, but I'm not fond of the 1 minute 30 opening. I want the lyrics and hooks. I know GD can play music, they don't have to prove it before they start the singing. Noo don't you dare That part is perfection. In fact the whole song is. Something that could have been better though, is the solo part on Castaway. First the guitar goes all crazy, and then they just randomly cut it of. I really don't know how the part could have been improved, but maybe either a longer tune before they cut the guitar off, or the bass taking over and pulling into a crazy bass solo instead. Just.. Something. I hope I made myself clear...
Sarcasm Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 Noo don't you dare That part is perfection. In fact the whole song is. Well in my opinion it isn't. I find it so annoying to listen to half an hour of power bass before they get to the bloody point.
Bam-Itz-GreenDay Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I think WMUWSE is a fantastic song <3 Plus I agree with everyone in saying that Letterbomb is a perfect song. I dont think it could be any better. Jesus of Suburbia is a great song also. And 21 Guns. All perfection.
BJA TC MD Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 I think after listening to live versions or musical versions, I can here some stuff that could have been done better. -The Static Age should totally have had the sax solo in the album version. -I like the way in the musical version of Give Me Novocaine, how right before the solo, when they say "oh novocaine", how it pauses a little and everyone says the line without instrumental. That could have been done in the original -I agree with what someone said before about 21 Guns and the piano when played live. I reckon it should have been in the original too. -I don't know if it really counts, but the songs from 1039/SOSH and Kerplunk could so much better if they were recorded in better quality, but they probably couldn't have done too much about that back then
DoodleBob Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 That's doable, considering we have the multitracks of that song. Mind linking me to a performance where they do that? Sure! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVaYkdG4k_I&ob=av2e There you go.
burnout409 Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I agree with Letterbomb! love it I also think Are We The Waitning is perfect, and waiting and She!
Red Lights Flash Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I think a lot of songs from American Idiot are perfect. Sure, they do some things better live but those are only an added value because it's life. Obviously there are a BUNCH of other songs that capture what they're supposed to capture, like She, Macy's Day Parade, Scattered, etc etc... However, I think there's one problem with the entire 21st Century Breakdown album: it feels like they were 'thinking' too much. They're all good songs, but I feel like they should've taken some more risks sometimes. I suppose the only exceptions are the '21st Century Breakdown' song itself and 'Last night on earth' which also perfectly delivers that song's message. Static Age needed the sax solo like many pointed out, Christian's Inferno is not half of what it could've been, I expected a mind-blowing rock 'n roll solo in KYE, and three-note chords like in Gloria's intro doesn't sound good as good on piano as they do on a guitar. Also, this might not be fair because the song isn't even complete yet, but Carpe Diem needs a new outro (after the I-fought-the-law-ish bridge) because we've heard a similar outro like a hundred times already.
pretty_and_demented Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I think all the song are perfect in there own special way... I don't think any of them could be better honestly, its more that whatever mood i'm in, certain song that describes it or helps me get through it couldn't get better.
