So Kerplunk is 20 years old on 17th January 2012. It's a pretty big anniversary.

Does anyone else think it would be a cool idea for a mass download of a chosen song from Kerplunk to get it in the chart for a week to celebrate it's 20th Anniversary?

I was thinking maybe Christie Road as it's quite a mainstream song and there's also 2 versions to download which would both count towards the chart (Kerplunk version and Awesome as Fuck version)

Would anyone else be behind this campaign?

edit: Edited to add a poll for which song to use. I've only included Christie Road and Who Wrote Holden Caulfield as firstly they seem to be the 2 most popular choices anyway, and secondly there are multiple versions to download. I'm not sure how the charts work in the US but I know in the UK they wont include 2 versions of the same song in the chart. (e.g. download Kerplunk version of Christie Road and then Awesome as Fuck version of Christie Road would just get 'Green Day - Christie Road' into the charts)

Second edit: As we only have just over 2 weeks left now I think we should agree on the song that currently has the most votes which is WWHC as we need to start promoting the campaign on twitter/facebook/youtube/etc.

And for those wondering, as above I can't confirm for other countries but I know for a fact in the UK that the sales are combined for live and studio versions of the same song because that's what has happened for similar online campaigns (RATM and Nirvana as confirmed by the UK Charts company)

This sounds like a pretty cool idea. Imagine hearing Christie Road on the radio?? :woot:

The only thing I'll say is maybe we should wait til next year for the 21st?

I like that idea!

The only flaw I see is that most people on here already own that song, and more likely the whole Kerplunk! album. I guess that's where the AAF version would come in handy though...

It's a good idea. ;)

That's a good idea, whether it works or not might depend on what else gets released at the time though. It'd be cool if we could actually do it :)

that's a good idea and i love the song...i'll do it if my parents allow me to ;)

...but we could also use Who Wrote Holden Caulfield, cos it's also an awesome song and it's also Billie's favorite ;) ...moreover we make a video for the anniversary and use Who Wrote Holden Caulfield for it...it would be awesome to see that song in the charts :)

but i'm also fine with Christie Roads since it's also one of my faves :)

i think christie road is perfect...

Who Wrote Holden Caulfield is a great idea to use as the fan video is already being made for it.

Moreover, there are 3 different versions to download to help it get into the chart. The original Kerplunk version, The Awesome as Fuck normal and deluxe version would all count. If enough people backed it, it could easily chart (generally only need sales of around 3,000 to make the UK Top 40 so could even get a Top 10 if enough people are willing to multiple download). Think it would be an awesome way to celebrate 20 years of Kerplunk by getting a song from the album into the chart.

Going down the same route as the facebook campaigns for UK Christmas number one in recent years, buying the song from itunes and then again from amazon/HMV/Play/etc counts as 2 different sales for the song. I would love to hear these songs on the radio. :D

I think this is a pretty damn good idea. I also think Christie Road would be the best song to pick, because there is, as already has been pointed out, two versions of it. However, I indeed think this is a wonderful idea.

really? i would think that 2000 light years away would be best. But i'm cool with whatever.

Christie Road or No One Knows - Mainly because they are my favourite songs on the album!

And may i say what a brilliant idea! Would be lovely to see one of the songs from Kerplunk in the charts

This is a great idea!

That would be so freaking awesome :woot:

This will be easy to do, time for me to re-download Kerplunk lol

BTW This should also be done with Nirvana's Nevermind since it turned 20 this year

I'm so down for this. I think the biggest issue you're going to run into here is the indecisiveness as to which song. It seems there are so many different opinions as to what song it should be.

This sounds like a great idea.

For song choice I think Christie Road would be nice, it's a lovely song for one and there are two versions of it. Who Wrote Holden Caulfield would be another smart choice because we have two versions, original and AAF version. Plus it's Billie's favorite from Kerplunk, by the way.

We should add a poll, pick a song, then tell everyone to do it.

I love this idea! Haha a Kerplunk song on the radio? Sweet.

I think alot of people already have that song though. O_o More than likely the whole album.

Even though it is on Kerplunk!, WTP is more known as a Dookie song, so when people see it on the charts they'll think Dookie. We want them to think Kerplunk!.

Green Day sure treats 2000LYA as if it's the big name song from Kerplunk, though I think Christie Road would be the nice choice... it deserves more recognition than its gotten!

(Plus it would be too 'random' for my personal favorites, One of My Lies or One for the Razorbacks)

We should definitely do a poll, but can it be a limited poll with maybe 3 choices, not one that includes all of Kerplunk? I think we should all look at it objectively and not just go toward our favorites. Because ideally, with successful mass downloading, it could play on the radio and more people will want to download it, and for that reason alone we should strive to choose the most pop-friendly track. Which is why I'd probably vote Christie Road.

I like Who Wrote Holden Caulfeild. I also like Adres' idea.

fine. one for the razorbacks.

This is a good idea :D

Does downloading different live and studio tracks of the same song really all contribute to the charting of one song? I would have thought that if half of us downloaded the AAF version, and half Kerplunk, it'd just split the downloads and neither would chart?
