Gregghy Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Well, it may seem weird and kind of funny but it's a long time that I'm thinking about it: are there some likenesses between Green Day's thought and the modern/ancient philosophy? I mean, the meaning of GD's songs can be found in some great philosophers like Kant rather than Platon? I think that the apathetic mood of early GD can be noticeable partly in the stoic philosophy; in the latest GD we can find some rebel attitudes towards the intolerance for some serious problems in the world, like the war (so it's a more social attitude, referable to some of the greatest socialist thoughts). So that's what I figured out, but I'm not sure I'm right so I wanted your opinions about that. Please don't 'shoot' me for what I wrote! Waiting for you guys! See ya!
jamesobxfan2296 Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Green Day preaches their philosophy in 21st CBD more than American Idiot. Just my opinion though.
DoodleBob Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 There is no dark side of the moon. Why did that make me laugh so much?
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 "The modern/ancient philosophy" is a bit vague, if not a completely meaningless statement. Your examples are also vague and far-fetched. You can link any opinion anyone has about big issues to philosophy. Being apathetic is not the same as the stoic philosophy. It's an interesting topic, but I don't think finding things that their songs say that "agree" with philosophies means a lot. Surprise me, though, who knows what someone may find.
Gregghy Posted November 8, 2011 Author Posted November 8, 2011 Yeah, I know I've been really vague and my ideas were just a sketch, so my purpose was to find some likenesses together. What I wanted to say to answer to some of you is that I am convinced that there are parallels. Don't ask me why! haha .. so let's go on with the discussion and thank for answering !
Amanda Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 If you're convinced there are parallels then surely you must have noticed some?
mechanicalman Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 I heard that they pretty much lifted Longview word for word from The Republic.
Gregghy Posted November 8, 2011 Author Posted November 8, 2011 If you're convinced there are parallels then surely you must have noticed some? Yeah you're right. That's sure. I will find them
Jacob. Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 If you click every first link on and from the Green Day page, you will eventually get to the philosophy wiki. Try it, it works. /notofftopic
Dylan. Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Socrates, Plato, Aristotle....Billie Joe Armstrong. One of these things is not like the other.
Dylan. Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Jacob, what does that have to do with anything being discussed here? It had the word philosophy in it. Certainly he can get away with that kind of spam, eh? I'm gonna go tell Aska on him.
JakeThompson Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 It's a liar when your home is your headstone.
Jacob. Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 It had the word philosophy in it. Certainly he can get away with that kind of spam, eh? I'm gonna go tell Aska on him. Yes. This is almost true.
green day is Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 I will never stoop to that level of fanboy-ism.
Hermione Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Oh come on, he's just interested in looking for some deeper meanings in their lyrics. Wanting to look deeper into Green Day's lyrics > obsessing over Billie's tweets but I don't see anyone being made fun of for doing that.
Dylan. Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 I am of the opinion that this thread is....not going anywhere. It might have had some potential if it had a bit of coherency. EDIT: Interpreting lyrics is different than putting them side to side with ancient philosophy. Green Day has their own philosophy, and their lyrics, like most rock bands' lyrics, reflect their values and beliefs. If we want to talk about lyric interpretation, we already have a thread for that. In fact we have multiple threads for that.
