koolkev Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 No, I do not mean that they're smoking AI. Anyway, , this thread is for thoughts about how the band seems to be living in the past a little. I mean, AI is over 7 years old. Do you guys personally think they're living in the past a little much? I mean, the AI musical I can understand, but the movie and all the extra stuff? Anyway, just wanted to collect some thoughts and see what people thought of this topic
Jacob. Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Hopefully after the movie and the musical tour, they put everything American Idiot behind them. It was a successful part of their career, but the album is 7 years old. They need to move onto more recent items, like I don't know, maybe a new behind the scenes movie on this next album. If it were to happen, I know Warner would wait until the album isn't relevant to release the movie.
Kristen M Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I wouldn't say they've been dragging it on necessarily. In my opinion the musical was beyond brilliant, and if anything glorified AI as one of the greatest albums in the past 10 years. As for the movie we'll have to wait and see. The way I'm looking at it it's either going to really suck or be amazing.
DoodleBob Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Think about it: It took producers 5 (or so) years to realize that American Idiot was theatre worthy. Obviously Green Day had always had some glimpse of this album being more than just sound tracks, they had a vision. If you made an album, one that's your best work, and someone offered to bring it to life, wouldn't you take it? No matter how old it was? Green Day would've regretted saying no, just like they would've regretted not signing to Reprise. This musical could've opened a whole new door for them, and if it didn't, who cares? It was the experience that made it worth while. Same with the AI movie. I honestly don't think Green Day would wait this long to release a movie about an album that came out 7 years ago if they had a choice. It just took directors until now to realize that AI has potential for the silver screen. Billie Joe has written and sang about living life to the fullest and taking risks, and that's exactly what they are doing/did with AI. They aren't living in the past, they are just taking oppertunities. That's my two cents.
BringMoreKnives Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Eh, maybe they're dragging it on just a little. After they release an AI movie, I think it'd be time to move on ...But they're Green Day. They can do whatever the fuck they want.
koolkev Posted November 3, 2011 Author Posted November 3, 2011 But... To reminisce is to die.... Whadaya make of that?
Alan86 Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 They toured the album for a year and a half then did nothing with it for about 3 and a half years while they worked on a new album. It was then revived as a musical and because of it's continued success a movie is being made while green day continues to work on another new album. It hasn't been 7 straight years of AI. Green Day has moved on, AI has just become it's own show.
greendaytone Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Cool topic kev, i salute you. While i do think Green Day are becoming very attached to American Idiot, i don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. They're still doing plenty of new stuff, so it's not like they're riding on the success of that album and doing nothing else. I think they should take American Idiot as far as they can, because in my mind, it still deserves more appreciation for the masterpiece it is.
justcause Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 But... To reminisce is to die.... Whadaya make of that? I don't think it's about looking back or living in the past - I see American Idiot as active, current, possessed of its own impetus. This impetus will drive it on, regardless of whatever else Green Day are doing, because AI has a life of its own. This is the mark of a great work of art.
.:Whatsername:. Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 All I know is, I will never get tired of American Idiot. In a way I hope they never stop doing things with it. I love that freaking album. I think they should take American Idiot as far as they can, because in my mind, it's it still deserves more appreciation for the masterpiece it is. And I completely agree with this.
pasalaska Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Maybe they just really like it and want to keep working with it
Dylan. Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 Chances are, that's the best selling record they will ever get. Might as well maximize it.
kellista Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I think maybe it's not really Green Day at fault. Like they're not to blame because producers and writers didn't offer them anything until a few years after it was out.
TaylorKlinke Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 If you had a successful album like American Idiot and even had the chance to do a musical, movie, etc etc etc....you would do it too 7 years old isn't that old either.
darenmay Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 what can possibly be after the AI movie? probably a book? AI on ice? or the HLAHG it's like harry potter, American Idiot will live forever. no matter which other book JK Rowling wrote, people will continue to celebrate Harry Potter.
bluefloyd.94 Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I think AI is to Green Day as Tommy was to the Who cause it went musical and then to movie so they could drag it for along time but I'm almost positive the movie is the last hurrah for AI
se7en Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 If we all enjoy it, and it's still popular.. Who cares
LudeBoy Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 so i guess Tho Who rode on Tommy too long also? you don't ignore an album that is still selling and making you an assload of money
Dylan. Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I would imagine that the movie is the last thing they'll do with AI. I mean, what's left to do with it? Tommy's actually something I've thought about several times in relation to AI. AI kind of is Green Day's Tommy, and not many bands get to have an album that transcends mediums like AI has. It really says something about the enduring power of AI. My hope was that Billie Joe would somehow adapt it for a novel, but the movie would be pretty wicked as well. Have you guys ever even read AI fanfic, or Danger Days fanfic? It's damn fucking good!
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I would imagine that the movie is the last thing they'll do with AI. I mean, what's left to do with it? A kid's cartoon! Or a (comic) book with soundtrack. Or make an American Idiot theme park where you can walk through Jingletown and go in a Holiday car rollercoaster and all that. The possibilities are endless!
Alan86 Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I would imagine that the movie is the last thing they'll do with AI. I mean, what's left to do with it? A making of documentary, well technically that's done too, but they could release it.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 I don't think it's dragging on. They keep reinventing it in different mediums. It's not like they keep re-releasing the same American Idiot CD with a bonus booklet and are still marketing American Idiot coasters and towels or anything and just riding the AI wave without bothering to do anything else. It was a massive album and it has the potential to be more than just music, and that's what they are doing with it, making the most of it. They're still doing new things and making new music, they're still Green Day the awesome band who has this album, they aren't the American Idiot© Band
DoodleBob Posted November 3, 2011 Posted November 3, 2011 But... To reminisce is to die.... Whadaya make of that? I don't think they are reminiscing though. Making an album that is old come to life isn't exactly recalling past experiences, it's creating new ones. Actually, if Green Day hadn't agreed to make AI a movie or a broadway musical, I think they would be reminiscing. That's probably why they are doing this, they don't want to look back and regret. Have you guys ever even read AI fanfic, or Danger Days fanfic? It's damn fucking good! Danger Days fanfic.
koolkev Posted November 4, 2011 Author Posted November 4, 2011 BTW- I'm not saying i dislike the album
Heather. Posted November 4, 2011 Posted November 4, 2011 But... To reminisce is to die.... Whadaya make of that? He's a walking contradiction and he got every fuckin' right
