Billie Joe at the Mark Twain Awards

Tonight I went to the Mark Twain Awards and saw Billie Joe. It was only him there, and not the rest of the band, which isn't what the website said, but I didn't care. Earlier that day when I was walking around the Kennedy Center, I got to the red carpet at just the right time when Billie was walking in to rehearse. I yelled out "HI BILLIE!" like an idiot and he raised his eyebrows at me and waved while chewing his gum. So I died.

Other celebrities walked in to rehearse, even Will, but everyone started showing up at 6:30. I met a bunch of other people, but Billie snuck in the back so I didn't see him again.

During the show, Billie was one of the last people to go, and he sang Good Riddance on his guitar and it was amazing as usual. In the background was a slideshow of funny pictures of Will.

He came out again at the end with everyone else... And was the shortest. It looked funny.

It really was an amazing show!!

Edit By Andres:

Don't forget this performance will air on PBS October 31, 2011.

Yo, I'm glad you had a good time, and Imma let you finish, but this is pretty damn disappointing news.

First of all, that it's not Green Day, second of all, that he sang Good Riddance (yawn), and third of all, that he did so in front of a retrospective? This just reeks of vomit-inducing cliches that I was pretty sure Billie was resistant to regarding that song. I guess for his friend Will Ferrell he wouldn't mind.

And this is kind of an emotionally detached question to get past my disappointment, but do you think it was always just going to be Good Riddance with Billie Joe, and marketing that as "Green Day" is true to form? I mean, yes, it's a "Green Day" song, but in a circumstance like this, I just feel so misled. I guess I need to convince myself that for some instances, Green Day just means Billie Joe. And I could see why it would be weird to market this as a performance by Billie Joe Armstrong, so... obviously, society at large is familiar with this song, and as Green Day, not the singer.

I am trivially frustrated.

I'm disappointed, too. :( I thought it was going to be some sort of George W. Bush-"American Idiot" theme going, with the whole band performing! But thank you for the info, OP :)

Yes, I think it will forever be that song (unless they create another one that spans as many genres as Good Riddance did). No doubt most of the audience was made up of older suits who listen to Top 40 and it was probably the 'safe choice' on their list of recognizable songs.

Although, they could have just as easily said it was going to be Billie Joe Armstrong, singer of the band Green Day.

No idea how people can be disappointed in something we were never promised. They never said Green Day were going to play.

I swear so many people always look at everything as the glass half empty.

We get to see Billie Joe perform a wonderful song on television. If anything, it's an extra thing for us to enjoy.

People expect more than they should, then bitch when it's not what they expected. Sounds like that's a fault of your own, and not one of Green Day's or the event organizers.

We still got two Green Day & Billie Joe appearences in 3 days, just the other way round to how they were announced.

I think I'm mostly disappointed for the sake of discussion, which reflects more on my lunacy than anything Green Day does or does not do  In reality, I'm not complaining and I'm looking forward to watching it. :good:

2: I thought the website said "green day" were going to be there... Not just billie joe. But I'm still happy that he performed and we'll be about to see it!

That's an excellent way to look at it.

I'm glad the OP had an enjoyable time! It's so lovely that Billie was able to make the trek out to support Will.

Yeah, let's look at it in the brightside, for the radio interview it was only suppose to be billie joe! But we got green day! Today it was suppose to be green day, but we got billie joe. If you think about it, it was just turned the other way. We got what we were going to get anyway. One night billie joe, the other night green day.

I don't know if I made sense. That's just the way I see It....

True, except not a performance with all the boys. Though I think seeing Mike's new hair makes up for any and all letdowns.

Yeah, but we were never told that's what was coming for either event.

I don't see it as a disappointment, surely better than nothing!

 bless this post.

Actually I'm pretty sure most press releases for this thing said, 'and performance by Green Day'. So really, people are allowed to wonder why it was just Billie without being called a spoil sport or whatever. Most likely they only wanted Good Riddance, and the rest of the band decided they didn't need to be there for that, but still.

Had people paid to see this given the billing of 'green day', then yeah they'd have reason to be annoyed.

The main press release, which we used and quoted on GDA

http://www.kennedy-c...ents/marktwain/

Will Ferrell

2011 Mark Twain Prize Recipient

The Kennedy Center will present the 14th Annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to Will Ferrell on Sunday, October 23, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. The award, named to honor one of America's—and the world's—greatest humorists, will feature a lineup of the biggest names in entertainment, including Jack Black, Green Day, Larry King, Nathan Lane, Adam McKay, Lorne Michaels, Conan O'Brien, John C. Reilly, Paul Rudd, Maya Rudolph, and Molly Shannon.

This cast of top entertainers will salute Will Ferrell in the Concert Hall at the Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The evening will pay tribute to the humor and accomplishments of the television icon and motion picture star.

Yeah, and it still says green day. People are going to see that and assume it means a performance because why else would they be there? Not to mention other releases did say they were performing.

I'm not blaming the band or anything, but it just feels like no one can show an ounce of disappointment around here these days without being told they were basically expecting too much.

Who cares it wasn't supposed to be a night celebrating Green Day it was all about Will Ferrel so we should be pretty Damn happy we got anything Green Day related in their! also can anybody tell me if the performance will be aired on T.V in England??

Posted

Thanks for you recap, pigeonwhoattackedbillie! Can't wait to see the performance, hopefully someone will record it when it's aired :) (I'm pretty sure it won't be aired in Norway!)

I don't understand people getting so disappointed that it was just Billie Joe. Yeah sometimes it sucks that people just think of Green Day as just Billie Joe Armstrong, but over the past couple of days we have got to see more of them than we have for a long time. Any Green Day news, whether it be just Billie or them all together, is great!

I wish i could have gone! :)

Do I need like american tv channels, or is this gonna be streamed on GDA like the interview a few days ago? (The one Andres filmed, with his pro-zooming skills)

Posted

My only disappointment comes in that I was hoping for a funny routine with song for Will from the band. True, my dream and wish, but it certainly seemed logical since it was a comedy affair for a comedian.

And they did say Green Day would appear. (as does a GDA tweet.) And they didn't. So there is a bit of disappointment in that.

True, seeing anything by any of the band members between albums/tours, is exciting and I am looking forward to seeing the show next weekend.

It's a bit sad only Billie Joe was there but it's still great to seem him play a song live again when it's aired on TV and to have another picture.
