The legendary volunteer run club 924 Gilman Street is celebrating it's 25th anniversary this year. To commemorate, UGZ Magazine have been posting these "sound-bite" interviews with people who have volunteered for the club during it's 25 years.

There are some interesting stories about the punk scene that grew around the the East Bay venue, which Green Day, of course were a part of.

You can hear Jeff Armstrong talking about a story his brother Tim (now of Rancid) tells of when he read about Gilman Street opening in Maximum Rock 'n' Roll Magazine while he was on his way to New York, and his excitement to come back to it.

It's really worth checking out if you want to learn a bit more about the community that gave Green Day and many other bands to this day, a place to play their music.

You can listen to the interviews on the UGZ Magazine Blog Spot.

Thanks to Abbey Fox for the heads up!

I'd love it if they had a thing to celebrate their anniversary there, invited Green Day, Green Day showed up, and sang 86. That would make my day for some odd reason.

What a quarter of a century it's been! Who would have thought a tiny space next to a caning shop could have incubated not only Crimpshrine and Green Day, but also Jawbreaker, AFI, and Rancid? No matter what you might think of the East Bay scene, there's no disputing that Gilman is a cultural icon.

Still can't quite believe that I've been to Gilman. For so long it was the epicentre of the holy-land to me

It was the same for me. I imagine it's how Jews feel going to Jerusalem.

Wow, 25 years. That's a long time. It's great that it's still running and everything. Man, I wanna go to Cali and go see a band there.

Also, not tryna be a spelling Nazi or anything, but the title of the thread says Giman Street's instead of Gilman Street's

No problem, thanks for pointing it out!

I'm really glad Gilman looks to have a stronger future, after talks last year that it may have to shut down due to higher rents. I hope that place can be around for years to come.

Twenty-Five Years of 924 Gilman

A look back at the venerable East Bay punk venue's first quarter-century.

We love the 924 Gilman Street warehouse unequivocally. Now as the club celebrates its silver anniversary, we thought it prudent to say how much we've appreciated 25 years of cheap, all-ages, all-volunteer-run, drug-and-alcohol-free punk shows, at a place where anyone could go and feel welcome. And with that in mind, we asked a few local artists, writers, and Gilman volunteers to share their fondest memories of the place.
