Blink's popularity vs. Green Day's

I posted about this awhile ago in the Blink thread but no one replied, and Blink had a concert around here a few days ago so my Facebook is just blowing up with them---I felt the need to ask again.

Basically most of my friends (and the people who aren't, but I'm friends with on fb) love Blink. A lot. They post lyrics, including Angels and Airwaves, videos, make statuses about how fucking awesome they are, have in-depth conversations about what they like the most, pretty much jizz all over the place all over this band. There must be 20 of them, ranging from the "cool kids" to the ...losers. And Green Day? I think I've seen Good Riddance quoted a few times. I've tried to like Blink and I just can't. I hate the one of the singer's voices. The other one isn't that bad actually. I will admit Travis puts out better drum tracks than Tre but nothing outside of that. On the other hand I love Green Day and I feel like they are the better band, all around. You have to be pretty damn good to get a musical made out of your hit album and get it on Broadway. Most recently, they won MTV's March Madness thing. Blink didn't come anywhere near the finals I don't think. I feel like it must be my bad luck... my little area just cut off from all GD fans and infested with Blink fanboys who go as crazy over them as a tween girl would go over Justin Bieber. I'm like the only one among my friends though (and I know a lot of different people, from all the different groups, not some loner) who likes GD at all. It's very annoying, mostly since I simply don't like Blink at all. Well... except for I Miss You. There's no one to talk to (in real life) about them, last year I almost couldn't find someone who wanted to go to the concert, etc. I guess what I'm asking here is... is it like this with any of you? Not just Blink. Do your friends in "real life" like GD as much as you? Do people post random lyrics of theirs from random songs as Facebook statuses? I feel like it's a stupid question because of their apparent popularity but I see absolutely nothing from GD outside of the media and this site.

10 years ago Blink were huge, much bigger than Green Day. Then American Idiot came along and Green Day became MASSIVE. Green Day have outnumbered just about everyone in competition (Blink 182, Sum 41, The Offspring, Rancid) so even if Blink overshadows Green Day who cares. GD have been there and done that and will forever be known as one of the greatest bands of all time. They're much different bands too, Blink is good and have progressed well but are nowhere near the same ball park as Green Day who are just on another level all together.

Angels and Airwaves kinda sucked. Now Plus 44 on the other hand, I actually got into that... okay, trailing off here.

Green Day, in terms of sheer numbers of their fanbase, I think is more popular than Blink. On the other hand, who gives a shit? Most of my favorite bands no one has ever heard of.

Yeah, Blink was a huge band and still is in my opinion - they're making a comeback with their new album being released next week and the fact that they're currently on tour is probably why they're "blowing up" on your news feed.

Plus, who cares if Green Day isn't "popular" among your friends anyways? If you like them, that's all that should matter. It's okay to be different. :) Not a lot of my friends like Green Day OR Blink for that matter, and I couldn't give two shits.

Well I try not to but I kind of give a shit for the reasons I listed. Knowing they're this hugely popular but everyone in my life likes the rival (and I know they're friends) to the point I can hardly find someone to go to a concert with me is annoying. I know it sounds like I'm just bitching, but still.

Also, most of these people simply don't like GD, not just don't bother with them. So I bring this up and they start saying they suck and everything. Even after I prove them wrong over and over....

luckily for me, yes, my closest friends are my Green Day friends (as in... ones I get to see in the flesh, not just on the net), and my non-Green Day friends, well they know that I'm a GD freak and it's part of who I am. If someone can't accept my infatuation with the band, then I have no time for that someone.

As for GD vs. Blink... even if Blink's more in the spotlight right now, thanks to their comeback album, Green Day will forever be a million times bigger (and more important) than Blink, all bias aside.

I like Blink alright. But Green Day will always be my fave. And when I hear someone say that Green Day sold out, I will kindly point out their love for Blink, because I think Blink and Green Day sort of are in the same boat.

I have a bit of an interesting case in me in that, if I hadn't gotten into blink-182, I probably never would have gotten into Green Day just sort of based on events in my life at the time and how my openness to music was. I'd say they're equally important to me, even though I tend to prefer Green Day over blink nowadays (although it really depends on which day). I think that Green Day was allowed to age better because their songs werent straight up dick jokes. Now that blink is not telling dick jokes in their songs, it looks kind of like Green Day did when they started making rock operas. I still like them both, and I'd say there are certainly worse bands/artists/people your friends could like than blink. Tom's voice may be a little annoying, but at least he stands up there and plays his guitar and stuff.

And no, this doesn't really happen to me as I don't like or listen to people. It actually really bugs me when people quote song lyrics as a status (pretty much any lyrics actually). I always feel like "dude, get your own quotes!" but that's just me. As for you, you have GDC, where we tend to do everything that your friends do over blink, jizz included. So...you can hide here until Neighborhoods blows over, especially if it ends up being bad (though I'm not sure it will be). Aside from that, just remember that bitching about blink makes you appear as ignorant as they are about Green Day.

Postings that Green Day is still a much bigger band, but there's a lot of hype and excitement for Blink releasing a new album together. The fact that Green Day isn't really doing much right now also Explains why fewer people are talking about them right now compared to Blink.

I was just about to say that none of my friends ever post lyrics on FB, and then one of them went and posted some of Ok Go's...

Anyhoo, about 12-13 yrs. ago one of my friends and I were crazy for Blink. Like in the way that you describe your friends now. We saw them 8 times in three years (insanity!). By the time that The Mark, Tom and Travis Show came out we had gotten over them. We went to that show as a last hurrah and pretty much never listened to them again, but were still sad when they 'broke up'. Now I listen to their old stuff and cringe (then again a lot of my favorite bands from back then make me cringe). Although I really wanted to see them again this year, but my friend refused to go. I can't wait to ehar their new stuff and see how they've matured.

That said, I never would have gotten into Blink if it wasn't for my uncle introducing me to Green Day and punk in general years before. I owe that moment a lot for how my musical tastes have evolved and will always prefer GD over 'insert band name here'. I plan on listening to them until they stop or I die, whichever comes first.

As for other people I know liking Green Day...that would be a huge NO. I've only ever met one person on this board and a few others at concerts, but no one close to me are fans. Although my nan does think Mike has a nice butt.

blink 182 are releasing an album next week =/ THAT IS WHY.

Green Day have not released anything for about three years or something and they aren't doing much atm anyway.

All of my "man" friends like green day and are kinda "soft-core" fans and I am their Green Day knowledge store. They always ask me are Green Day going on tour soon and i'm like 8) ................no

Blink have a few good songs and mark hoppus and Travis Barker seem ok too but the fact that Tom is such a giant douche just ruins that band. Green Day are a class act and several levels above blink.

Oh I love blink! Not as much as green day but they're my 2nd favourite band. They are good people making good music but no they aren't as much as popular as GD.

I think that along with GD and Offspring they are the best "pop punk" bands...

Actually the blink funs annoy me sometimes. They talk shit about green day and say that they sold out!I think they are just jealous cause Green Day got huge when blink broke up.

it's impossible to choose.

I prefer green day

I don't why but I just don't get the appeal of Blink... there's a few songs that I like, but then most of it's all a bit... 'meh'...

Ha, Blink ain't popular here in my area. Of coarse, my friends freaking love Green Day and they accept Green Day's talent to produce good music.

We're all going CRaZy over The Script atm!!

The way it seems to me, Green Day are much more popular in my area. And although I know many people who like Blink (not really around here), I still don't really like that band.

Popularity is pointless. Green Day has a massive amount of fans including these 46,000 members here on GDC, which is probably less than a tenth of one percent of Green Day fans that use the internet. Blink 182 used to be one of my favorite bands. I'm not sure how I will feel about their new release.

One thing that I've learned from being a Green Day fan is to stop giving two shits about how many other fans care about Green Day. Sometimes popularity falls, and sometimes our forum gets quiet. But that ones who care, stay for the whole time. Not because of how many other people love Green Day, but because they love Green Day, and all of their fans.

I really do like Blink, but that's nothing compared to my love for Green Day. They will always be the biggest band in the universe for me.

Well I just gotta say, that in Denmark everybody knows Green Day. (not many fans though) But NOBODY knows about Blink.

Also I don't care about popularity. It doesn't make Blink better than Green Day, cause they are sure hell not!

(btw I love Blink 182)

I love both blink and Green Day with all of my heart, but Green Day are more popular. They've sold more albums in the US alone, than blink have in total. Blink is a band that has a lot of casual fans, I'm sure most people posting lyrics on their Facebook don't know much past their singles. That's okay.

Like many people have already said, popularity isn't very important. I love both bands, and they have a lot of similarities, so it's sort of fun to compare.
