desertrose Posted August 27, 2011 Posted August 27, 2011 A great article on Lookout and how Green Day played a part in it. The rise and fall of the Lookout Records empire. It is from 2005, but still some great information.
Bastard of 1967 Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 A great article on Lookout and how Green Day played a part in it. The rise and fall of the Lookout Records empire. It is from 2005, but still some great information. Also makes for good "related reading" material if you're following Larry Livermore's "Spy Rock Memories" blog posts. Thanks for the link.
fiercecircus Posted August 28, 2011 Posted August 28, 2011 oof. harsh. the whole situation just sucked. I could tell they (lookout) were going downhill in '97 or so, even though i was still in love with the stuff they were putting out. I could tell the whole face of lookout changed- with the shiny magazine ads and music videos and whatnot... AND THE FUCKING DONNAS... and i can't blame green day for pulling their records. Green Day was essentially funding a label that didn't pay any of their bands (Green Day's friends' bands) and also, Green Day was funding a label that PUT OUT A LOT OF SHITTY MUSIC in it's last 2-3 years. Seriously- they strayed so far from what they had been- it was horrible. Ted Leo was a pile of crap. It's really not about the money- comparatively, what Green Day has made off of lookout is a drop in the bucket of what Green Day has made total... But i'm glad they finally did pull the rug out from under Lookout, because it just wasn't fair to any of the other bands. And it would be one thing if Lookout was putting out amazing music... but i wouldn't have wanted to fund the fucking Donnas or Ted Leo either... (fact: the only good thing about the Donnas is that they always had a bunch of great Lookout openers. I have been to more "Donnas" shows and left before they played... and saw Pansy Division, the Mr T Experience, The smugglers, The queers, the first incarnation of the Plus Ones (joel reader's post mtx band- with dan panic playing drums...) Sorry Donnas. You just weren't that great...
Hermione Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Interesting read, I'd never read about it in nearly as much detail as that before. Thanks for posting!
greendaytone Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 Had a read of this yesterday, it's really in depth and a must read for the Green Day history buffs!
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted August 29, 2011 Posted August 29, 2011 That was a giant read, but an interesting one. Nicely written too, it's not a drag or anything despite its length.
