i keep meaning to make this thread but never get round to it.. i didn't search, so forgive me if something similar already exists.

i've seen green day live twice, once in 2009 (october 26, sheffield), and at the legendary wembley stadium gig in june of last year. both times my mum came along with me, cause they were too far from home for me to go alone. in 2009 we both had seats, at wembley i was down in the pit with a friend while my mum was in the seats. she'd seen bullet in a bible before, and she said she was very impressed with how good and professional they are when playing live, but she had one gripe: billie joe appeared to be like a cult leader. she said this was because of his hey-ohs, the way the crowd does whatever he does (raising their arms, shouting 'hey! hey! hey!', etc) and how he just seemed to have a generally arrogant stage presence. she likened it to the pink floyd film 'the wall', however, i haven't seen it so i can't comment on that particular judgement. now, i disagreed with her on this, because naturally i'm a diehard fan etc etc don't speak a word against the boys!!!!

but recently, i've come to see what she means. she saw queen live in their prime, and she said she thinks that while billie is an amazing frontman, some of the time he appears to be working his magic on the crowd purely because he can. i don't know, i don't really have an opinion on it because i love their live show, but i do agree that i could do with less hey-ohs and such. but then, if i was as good as billie, maybe i would control people just for the sake of controlling them.

what are your opinions on this?

also, the discussion on pages 3-4 of this thread reminded me to start this off.. again, sorry if it's repetitive and/or doesn't make sense (it's just gone two in the morning, soo..).

Of course he is. Don't we all remember that he's the frontman of the Satanic heavy metal group The Greendays? Obviously he's trying to get us to join him so he can steal our souls and present them to his Dark Prince.

I wish I hadn't read this, you're scaring me!! :ermm: Keep Billie away from voodoo dolls is all I'll say!

Aren't all concerts like that? I've never been to a concert where the frontman didn't direct the crowd, at least a little bit.

He better be or else all of those goats I've sacrificed in his name have been for naught.

Yes he is. He wants us all to join him in the religion of Lushotology :P

Yes, he is. What is wrong with that, exactly? That's the point of being a frontman in a rock band. Crowd control. Mind control.

Duh!! Don't you know he has an official cult called "Y'know?" It costs $20 a month to be a member...it's actually a good place to practice Billie worshiping, how to learn to say 'HEY OH!!!!!" for 3 minutes straight, how to masterbate in public and not get nervous, and a good place to convert to Lushtology.

I recomend you join, it's worth it.

This thread is a joke, the type of joke, where only the person that said it laughs. I mean, seriously, this is just stupid, and bugs me more than usual for some reason. Probably, because it's not very funny at all.

oop, i apologise.

yes, he is a cult leader and we are all his little slaves (especially Andres)

No, he is not a cult leader! He is a tool of mass destruction used for setting computer programming from the sound waves into your head, which will in 2012, control your mind, spirit, and thought. It's all in good fun, he is just trying to get the crowd to have fun instead of sitting on their asses and clapping from time to time. no, it's fine, wasn't trying to be a jerk, these type of threads are fun! i'm just bored, lol

You confuse me. Also, your comma abuse is driving me up the wall.

Uh yes of course! Isn't it obvious?! His involvement in Live Freaky Die Freaky, we should have known!

I think he just wants everything to be great, every time, and he wants to make sure that happens. I remember watching him on the AI tour, and seeing how he was bringing a whole cast of characters into life - characters that materialized in the AI musical, but wtf, he'd already done that. Such power, such intensity, such giving - and he can make sure of it for himself, and for the band, cause Green Day will always fucking bring it, but the audience is a variable, the potential for ecstasy or devastating disappointment.

He doesn't take a chance on that - he spends a huge amount of energy rousing that audience up to meet his level. I don't find any arrogance in his stage presence - I do find that he demands as much as he gives, and because of that, a Green Day show is something that fucking shakes you to the core.

Be careful what you guys say against the great and majestic Billie! He might hear us. And then we will be ostracized from the cult.

I for one welcome our new punk rock overlord.

They don't mean it Billie! They know not what they say!!!

I understand the meaning behind what you're getting at by describing him as a cult leader. Honestly, there are frontmen, and then there are those who just have their own reign over every crowd they get in front of, whether the people like it or not, because they're JUST that good. Freddie Mercury will always be the #1 example, and the frontman to end all frontmen.

If Billie is a cult leader, than Freddie Mercury is his overlord he's trying to appease. And I've said it many times, but I feel like Billie is one of the closest things we have to a modern-day Mercury, and I'm sure one of his goals is to channel him to a certain extent. In fact bringing up Wembley again, when Billie made the speech about the band not breaking up until they're in coffins flashed my mind completely to a VERY similar speech that Freddie made in the same stadium, 25 years previously. And I can't help but think that one of the only reasons why Billie decided to preach the fate of the band was a) duh it's fucking Wembley and b) because of that iconic performance.

This may or may not have turned into a Freddie Mercury appreciation post, but you all MUST understand what I mean.

Nothing wrong with a Freddie Mercury appreciation post. :)

Frontmen have different dynamics. Freddie knew how great he was - that was what gave his performances their majesty, and also the sense of loneliness and isolation. He was like this beautiful instance of a species existing without its kind. Billie Joe, on the other hand, doesn't know how great he is, and it's this insecurity in him that lets other people in. It all works.

:runaround:

Such posts are inevitable from time to time. I think all of humanity should be subject to random fits of Freddie Mercury appreciation. It happened to me on the subway once. Hell, Billie Joe himself fell victim to such a moment at 3:45 in this video :eyebrows:

Damn. Now I really want to see Green Day open a show with "In the Flesh."

What's wrong with heavy audience interaction and an excellent stage presence? It's something I always value in frontmen and strive to achieve as a frontman myself. I absolutely love Billie Joe's stage presence, I think he's got it down.
