ColinOr Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 I've noticed in the past 2 years, since the pre-album release warm-up shows in between April and May 2009, Christian's Inferno has not been played. I'm pretty sure I've not seen it on any arena date set-lists. Is there any reason they won't play this live? They seemed to have so much fun playing it, but if they would rather play other songs, then thats fine, but not playing it on a tour that went on for 1 year+ with over 100 dates, you'd expect it to get played at least once since the warm-up shows. I'd love to see it live, its badass. Billie Joe gets really into it.
Alan86 Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 There are loads of songs the don't play live. Peacemaker, restless heart syndrome, horseshoes and hand-grenades VLG little girl and see the light are others from 21stCB that were never played on the tour.
Hermione Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Yeah they never played a lot of 21st CB songs live. Which is a shame , because I would've loved to see a lot of them! I think one of the reasons Christian's Inferno specifically wasn't played is because they LOVE playing St Jimmy so much. Christian's Inferno is a similar kind of performance, with Billie playing a totally badass character running round the stage. Personally I would've loved to have seen them switch St Jimmy for Christian's Inferno but I think they just enjoy St Jimmy too much to have done that.
jamesobxfan2296 Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 They can't play every song live. If they did that, they would have like a 4-5 hour concert. I don't know, but I would think it would be hard to keep the same energy for 4-5 straight hours. Even though Green Day does a good job at keeping the energy for 2 1/2 -3 hours. I know I couldn't go that long. Maybe on the next tour they'll play some of your favorite songs that didn't get played on the last one. As for me, I hope they play most of the same songs as last tour (Same stuff from AI and old stuff like Longview with Billie Joe singing. Last tour it was a just fans pulled out of the crowd to sing with like one date that I know of when Billie Joe sang the lyrics and an audience member played guitar. Not that any of said audience members were bad, I just want Green Day to play everything on Longview).
DoodleBob Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 We kind of already have a thread for this: Songs That Should be Played More Live: http://www.greendaycommunity.org/Forum/index.php?showtopic=85516&st=0 I'm not a mod, so I'm not going to complain though:) Anyway, I think it has to do with popularity. I mean, Green Day is more likely to plays songs that most people know. Like Good Riddance, American Idiot, When I Come Around, those types of songs. Not alot of people know about Christian's Inferno, you gotta remember, not everybody that goes to a GD concert is a hardcore fan like us GDCers:) It's also kind of difficult to play 200+ songs in a 2-3 hour time slot. With that said, I hope that Green Day plays Chrisitan's Inferno in future tours, but it's hard to please every fan, there are bound to be some songs that get left out, and Christian's Inferno was one of those songs.
Hermione Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 It's true they can't play every song but they could've shown 21st CB a bit more love. At times they were playing more songs off American Idiot than 21st CB on the 21st CB tour! Fair enough if they're gonna play well known songs but they were playing AI non-singles when they could've been playing 21st CB non-singles . Just one of many ways that album was sadly neglected. .youtube.com/watch?v=4PobWjwLRzQ - I'm so glad we have this good quality video of when they did play it. See how good it would've been if they'd added it to their setlist! That diabolical laugh is the best
petros Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 They aren't even playing Last Of The American Girls which happens to be a single so it's not that strange they don't play Christians Inferno! Although Christians Inferno happens to be my least favourite Green Day song it is very good live!
jamesobxfan2296 Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 In general, yeah, but this thread's about one specific song. If it turns into an "OMG they need to play these songs more!" kind of deal, I'll lock it up. As far as why Christian's Inferno wasn't played, who knows? If they had played everything off of AI and 21CB every night (although they did come very close to playing all of AI a couple of times), they wouldn't have been able to do the oldies set that was, frequently, the highlight of the shows. Why did they leave certain songs out all the time rather than rotating songs around? Probably because they already had to re-learn most of their back catalog for the oldies set, and adding the remaining 21CB and AI songs would've just been too much to keep straight. My opinion. I concur. The old music is part of what makes a Green Day show spectacular. I can't imagine Green Day would ever exclude any of the old music. That'd be like leaving the fans of the old Green Day at the shows excluded. Green Day never wants anyone to be left out and that's a great thing about them.
Hermione Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 Could've excluded some of the many songs from their 5 year old album to make room for songs from their new album though . It was called the 21st Century Breakdown tour not the American Idiot tour.
Heather. Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 :rolleyes:You'd think they'd mix in a lot of the 21CB songs that they just didn't play. I mean, they threw in basically every song from American Idiot at some point on the last tour, so you WOULD think they'd at least randomly play every song a few times from their newest album. And I do remember Billie or maybe it was Mike (but I think it was Billie ) saying how much he loves Christian's Inferno. I could see how maybe it doesn't flow right in the setlist with St. Jimmy, but why would anyone give a shit? Besides the AWTW/Jimmy transition, I could give a fuck what order and flow they play their music in, and I really think most people feel the same way. There are SO many songs from 21CB that should be played live more, ESPECIALLY rockers like H&H, Little Girl, etc... it's kind of bizarre that they didn't play them. But maybe on the NEXT tour. All that being said, it's not one of my favorite GD songs so I don't really care
Hermione Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 AI was their biggest hit. Like, it's not even close. Many (most?) of the fans who attended 21CB shows became fans because of AI. If they'd only played AI, Holiday, BOBD and occasionally a couple of others off of that album, they'd have been ignoring a very large portion of the people who went to those shows. Besides, it's not like 21CB was ignored. They played a good chunk of the songs from it every night; thing is, the album wasn't quite as big a hit (and didn't have as many hit singles) as AI, and it had five more songs, so they played less of it every night. Yeah I suppose it is understandable but still, it would've been nice to see them showcase more of the songs from that album. I'm all for the hits and classics being played but I still think when it came to playing non singles they could've slipped in a couple more 21st CB ones in place of AI ones. Replacing Before The Lobotomy with Give Me Novacaine half way through the tour was a bit much, and how about whipping out say Horseshoes And Handgrenades instead of Letterbomb? None of those songs are hugely well known and all could be equally crowd pleasing. Maybe the AI musical had something to do with it, I imagine it must've made them pretty eager to play some AI songs. As the tour went on and the musical took off they were playing more and more AI, so seems like it was an influence.
jamesobxfan2296 Posted August 20, 2011 Posted August 20, 2011 It's shit, why would they play it live? I wouldn't necessarily call it that, even though it's not exactly my favorite song. At least it's better than most of the mainstream crap that's out today.
Mar Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 It's shit, why would they play it live? Well, I wouldn't be that harsh, but I do think it's a lot weaker than anything else on the album. Maybe the band agrees?
mechanicalman Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 Well, I wouldn't be that harsh, but I do think it's a lot weaker than anything else on the album. Maybe the band agrees? I think they've been blessed with the gift of hearing, so they probably do.
Kristen M Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Mod note: Please don't quote videos! That is one badass performance
Malleus Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 It's shit, why would they play it live? Ladies and gentlemen, the award for "Most Convincing Argument" goes to...mechanicalman! Woo! But really, I think they should play this more. It is a pretty bad ass song and one of my favorites from 21st CB to be honest. Like it's been said before in this thread, it is too similar in style to St. Jimmy which is the better song.
pisquano Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 It's shit, why would they play it live? Exactly my thoughts.
Red Lights Flash Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 I don't have a problem with the song but not many people like it, so it's good they don't play it. Other than that, I think they realized that some of these songs on 21stCB just don't work that well live (songs like Little Girl, Restless Heart Syndrome, Peacemaker) even though they're good album songs. I'm 99% sure that's one of the reasons why they did that Tiki Bar gig, to know what songs work before putting them on the album.
coco07800 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Well actually, they played those songs live :christian's inferno: peacemaker : But only once
