basKT_case90 Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 So what year did Green Day/Sweet Children officially form? On Wikipedia (...yeah such a reliable source) it says 1987, however in a recent interview the interviewer started off by saying "So you've been a band since 1987" (or something like that), but Billie corrects her and says 1988. I can't remember which video it was though. I'm guessing 1987 is when Mike and Billie played their first show together, but 1988 is when the full band (inc. John Kiffmeyer) started playing as Sweet Children. Personally I consider '88 as the year they became a band. In your own opinion, what year do you consider when the band formed?
Tre_Gina Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 I always thought 1987 but I would like it to be 1988 as thats when I was born - just think that would be cool!
bollard_11 Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 The band started in 2004 when they released their first album American Idiot, everybody knows that
Karen. Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 The band started in 2004 when they released their first album American Idiot, everybody knows that Haha! Great success for a first album. Some people might have said the same thing about "Dookie" back in the day! At the AI muscial finale GD show Billie Joe said 1988.
Hermione Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Yeah I think you're right OP. At the first London O2 show in 2009 the story Billie told us at the beginning of Before The Lobotomy was that it was Green Day's 21st anniversary and they were now the legal drinking age. Except the anniversary wasn't actually on that date it was a few days before. And the legal drinking age is 18 in the UK. Worst BTL story ever
Kayfabe Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 Oh I thought it was '87 too. Oh well even so, that's the year Mike and Billie Joe got together and thought: let's play music together! Worst BTL story ever
Sweet Armataged Chump Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 In 1987. Billie says 1988 because John joined that year. In 1987 it was BJ, Mike, and Sean Hughes. http://www.setlist.fm/search?query=artist:%28Green+Day%29+date:%5B1987-01-01+TO+1987-12-31%5D
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 In 1987 http://www.setlist.fm/search?query=artist:%28Green+Day%29+date:%5B1987-01-01+TO+1987-12-31%5D Good job reading the rest of the thread (or the OP)!
ANJI Posted August 18, 2011 Posted August 18, 2011 I always thought 1987 but I would like it to be 1988 as thats when I was born - just think that would be cool! Agree! That's my birth year too
in_your_face Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 The band started in 2004 when they released their first album American Idiot, everybody knows that Ha! Brilliant saying.
kristóf Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 I think it's 1988, because their gig in Rod's Hickory Pit was in that year.
Monica. Posted August 19, 2011 Posted August 19, 2011 .......So we all agree that they formed in either 1987 or 1988, and maybe even 2004.
Elena Posted August 21, 2011 Posted August 21, 2011 .......So we all agree that they formed in either 1987 or 1988, and maybe even 2004. hm....and i always though it was 1994 when Dookie came out...their first album !! just kidding i think they formed in 1987, but John joined in 1988
The Disappearing Boy Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 sweet children was around late '87. i think they had 4 members at the time? i think they then changed it a bit and john came in in 1988 and started performing regularly. not sure if billie joe knows exactly, but he says 1988, so i'd go with that.
