Okay, so here is an example of a simple power chord:

this means on the E string (the top one) you hold the 5th fret. On the A and D strings you hold the 7th fret. The chord looks like this when played.

The reason my i'm explaining you this particular shape is because you need this to play pretty much every Green Day song. For example, BOBD.

That's basically all it is, but here is an index of other things you would find regularly:

/ = slide up

\ = slide down

~ = vibrato

x = scratch

h = hammer on

There are more, but these are the ones you will normally encounter.
