desertrose Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I first posted this in Random News but some members thought it should have it's own thread for the interesting read that it is. Backstage chefs at Green Day concerts whip up fresh fare under hot lights between pyrotechnic blasts. A nice article from February 2011 about what they cook up for Billie Joe, Mike and Tre. They also share a recipe for a Ravioli dish they prepared for the guys. Interesting read on what preferences the guys ask for. Eat Like a Rock Star
Jaymee!! Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Am I the only one who finds the cup thing absolutely fucking ridiculous? Just use any plastic dixie cup, ffs.
Prosthetic Brain Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I definitely found this article interesting and a fun read! I never actually thought of tour chefs before, and it was interesting to see how all that works on a Green Day tour, and what they eat before and after shows.
Punk-tastic32 Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Great article! I never thought about the pyro-shielding abilities of the umbrellas, that's really creative! Now I want to have my mom make that ravioli so I can eat the same ravioli as Green Day Just out of curiousity, can anyone make out what it says on the paper they're holding in the picture? I can only see "Green Day's tour 2010 Irvine, CA" at the top and "Korean BBQ" at the bottom
Karen. Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Interesting...I'm partial to a Solo cup myself. I think Cometbus would love this article.
ScatteredPictures Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 It's weird how I actually today thought about what they might like to eat and then I see this
Satan Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 this was such a good article! is it just me, or does green day seem a little picky?
Fuzz Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I don't think Green Day is picky, i mean seriously, they drink Pabst I just assume they can afford the things they want, so why not get them. I mean if they can afford to take chefs on the road, then it's not really a stretch for them to get the other stuff the way they like.
Four. Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Food. This is really interesting. Also, I'm so making the ravioli tonight. It looks fucking mouth-watering.
Red Lights Flash Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 It seems picky but I think it's perfectly normal. The cups are probably a matter of aesthetics on stage (the backgrounds are black). I personally also wouldn't want to eat fast food every day either. And I can totally imagine them needing a lot of protein after a show, cause that probably equals a 3-hour workout. Plus, it's not like they can randomly go get some food in town easily, so I think it's good that they have others to make sure they always have food available, and that they get to try local drinks/food. Plus, they're freaking rich. If they can afford to get great food, then why wouldn't they? They deserve it. (With 'they' I don't necessarily mean the individuals of the band, but the tour fund at least)
ConfirmPassword Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Interesting. Thanks for sharing .... Now Im hungry....
gdpony Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 This was a nice read And I will try to make the ravioli.
Jaymee!! Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 There's a picture floating around somewhere of their runner for the Hamilton show in 09 that's pretty similar to this.
pasalaska Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 I shall post what I posted in the Random News Thread here Those are the guys I saw in the backstage area in Melbourne! we were waiting for the band to arrive. They were making burritos or some other sort of wrap, as well as a fruit platter. I remember being outraged because they threw out half a punnet of perfectly good raspberries (my favourite). That was the day of the show that got postponed, because Billie god food poisoning. Next day, the same guys were there cooking, and one of them wasn't wearing gloves. We decided that he must have given Billie the food poisoning because of his lack of gloves edit: just read further down the article and saw this: The band has specific requirements. As Ricalis explains, when they arrive, "an egg burrito is waiting for them, if they want." There's always a vegetable crudités platter, cheese, fresh fruit and a selection of fresh berries. That's what I saw! :woot: and the black cups thing - I'm leaning towards it being diva-like The band use bottled water on stage (always Fiji water, posh bastards), and Tre has his little drinks platform, which always has a red solo cup with something that isn't water on it, with a black straw and tiki umbrella. The crew also use red cups. ain't never seen no black cups
fadi_7 Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 hhhmmm i'm gonna try it it's looks good, thanks for the article
VanVan Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 ha, this is awesome. im not surprised they take chefs on the road at all.
Fuzz Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 This led to me going out to buy tortillas to make a breakfast burrito.
spark in the night Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 haha what a cute article I never even thought about where they get their food. Figured they went to Taco Bell for 4th meal every night Can I come on tour with them? I need to eat healthier.
Tubbie Head Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 This was so cool to read I wanna make a Ravioli like that. hahah
captain peroxide Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Really interesting article. I honestly never thought about this aspect of their crew / touring schedule before. Really cool to see how much pride and care these guys clearly have in their jobs. Am I the only one who finds the cup thing absolutely fucking ridiculous? Just use any plastic dixie cup, ffs. However, this struck me as totally ridiculous in that rock star way, which sucks to see from Green Day. It's like one of those outrageous demands you find in bands riders, like the m&m thing.
Disapperingirl Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Wow, that's interesting...those guys really work hard...I've always been attracted to cooking (ehm ehm...mhmm...ok, to eating too... ) And I'm soooo proud!!!! Ravioli are an Italian dish, I'm Italian and I can cook that as well ..maybe I can become one of Green Day chefs too...
pasalaska Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 also, in that recipe - I had to google 'sweet butter' I've never heard of unsalted butter called that before
captain peroxide Posted May 22, 2011 Posted May 22, 2011 Alex, the M&M thing and other ridiculous requests made in riders do serve a purpose. Think of it this way: if a venue isn't willing to double-check themselves on something as simple as "no brown M&M's", what else are they cutting corners on? It's ridiculous by design. I know the m&m thing was designed to ensure that the more serious stuff was being paid attention to, but plenty of bands have put ridiculous things in there just because they can.
