oscar is a nimrod Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Hey everybody, What song do you think defines green day and why? In my opinion the defining green day song is probably "basket case" because it is just so green dayee. Everything about it smells of green day. Btw I expect better explanations than mine
oscar is a nimrod Posted May 15, 2011 Author Posted May 15, 2011 Yeah,I'm on my iPod so I can't search for threads as far as I know?
Punx89 Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Minority I think. It represents the freedom and the independence that Green Day have. It's their first "political" song and it is also really great.
Zero. Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I felt like being a smart ass and saying the song Green Day did.... but to tell the truth I couldn't decided, it's hard to define one band in one of their many songs...
Liam Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I think every song they've written defines Green Day. Like Zero said you can't define them in 1 song with all the songs they have written, its all adds up to how you could define them. Without them they wouldn't be who they are today.
JDookie Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 In my opinion, Walking Contradiction... It's fucking crazy like them Especially the rythme and the video for me are Green Day, but I know it's a subjective impression!
AnnA™ Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I couldn't choose. They've gone through so much and represent a lot to me, I've never felt that they can be defined by just one song.
DecanoLP Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 It's kinda impossible to name one song, but in my opinion, "Cigarettes and Valentines" defines their sound pretty well. Just because it is such a good mix of their old and new sound and this is why I want them to release it as single.
Satan Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 ohhh, well right now i'd probably say holiday. it captures their energy and urgency as well as a bold political statement which is sort of their thing right now. it also really exposes their simplicity (with the instruments). to top it off, if you said the BIAB/AAF version of holiday defined them, then you'd also have the live band aspect.
in_your_face Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I would go for... Jesus Of Suburbia. "This song is dedicated to every single person who comes from a small fucking town!! This song is called JESUS OF SUBURBIA!" - BJ.
Katarina. Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Personally I don't think there's just one song that defines Green Day. To get an idea of who the band is, what kind of music they make, what they write/care (or not care) about, it's better to listen to their whole discography.
call_debbie Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Jesus of Suburbia. That is my choice too ! If you look deep into the lyrics, you know JOS = Green Day
EvanAsFuck Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 Well they've changed/grown so much throughout the years and throughout each album, so it's impossible to pick one song that defines their entire career... However, I would say that the one "ultimate" Green Day song would be Jesus of Suburbia...
Annie, get your gun Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 The song that defines Green Day, is Green Day!
Kristen M Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 That's really difficult to say.... Probably minority
WestboundSign! Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I can't really choose one song. For me, Green Day is defined by every song they've written.
Hermione Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 I'd choose Longview, it's my favourite Green Day song and for me it's the ultimate Green Day song. It encompasses so many of the different aspects that define them and their music, the list is huge: It's an odd subject for a song and they tackled it in a refreshingly (and totally) honest way, the lyrics are thoughtful and dark but also funny and quirky. It's not afraid to be silly and serious at the same time. The music has more of that wonderful Green Day quirkiness - a punk song that's full of laid back jazzy bass! The music is simple but at the same time they weren't scared to experiment with different/not conventionally 'punk' sounds - it's that ambition and open minded approach that's always set Green Day apart. And it has that classic depressed lyrics/catchy melody contrast. The fact that they bring fans on stage to sing it now makes it even more fitting as a song to define Green Day. The way they break down the barrier between band and crowd in a totally fun and friendly way like that just about sums up Green Day on stage for me. Not to mention it was their first single, the song that introduced them to the world and an iconic song for that era of music and for the band. So yeah, I can't think of a song that defines Green Day better than Longview!
Rosie May Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 To me, there is no one song that defines them. All of their songs represent different aspects of them as a band. There are two many sides to them to be summed up entirely by one song. Personally, I think the only musicians that can be defined by one song are people who only had one hit wonders.

It's impossible to describe Green Day with just one of their songs. They've evolved so much over the years. You could choose a song to represent each era, but not the band as a whole.
