JC Supermarket! Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I was wondering what you guys thought was cool about Billie and Jason's guitar rig over the years.... That can include anything (example: pedals, guitars, amp heads and cabinets, etc). I really enjoyed Billie's vintage Gibson's during the American Idiot era (The white, black, and sunburst Les Paul's). His 21st Century Breakdown guitar set up disappointed me a bit, because he didn't really use the American Idiot Gibson's that much. Well he does have over 25 vintage Les Paul's.... I guess he likes diversity
bollard_11 Posted April 4, 2011 Posted April 4, 2011 I like the Telecaster Beej has been using towards the end on the 21CB tour. I think its a 72 Deluxe Reissue. Also he has used Jazzmasters in the past, I would like to check those out along with what pick ups he used in them. However as I am currently planning out my own Rig, pedals and amp, I have been investigating those a bit more than guitars. I plan on getting a Boss Blues Driver soon, which both Jason and Billie use. Then after that I will be investigating amps, mainly the Marshall JCM800 head that Billie, along with a few other artists I am fans of, have used. I also think this thread may be best suited in the underground section
JC Supermarket! Posted April 4, 2011 Author Posted April 4, 2011 what type of strings does Billie use? I believe he uses Ernie Ball Super Slinkies (plural, of course), and regular Ernie Ball. For his acoustic's, I don't know, but I'm guessing he would use some form of an Ernie Ball string. I've heard he's used these weird strings before, forgot what they were called though. I'm also interested in his custom shopped Telecaster. I'd like to see the pickups on that thing.

Actually, Billie's fingers are too big for him to be handling .09-gauge Super Slinkies. I don't know exactly what he uses, but he most likely uses .10-gauge or heavier strings. As for the brand, I can't really tell. Green Day's listed on both the Ernie Ball and GHS websites, so it could be either one.
porksoda Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I always prefer blue. But I do love the crunch on "American Idiot" and "Holiday".
Prosthetic Brain Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I always have and will always love Blue, but I also liked his SG that he used during the Warning era (or was it nimrod?), the white LP from American Idiot, and the black LP with the class of thirteen logo on it.
LudeBoy Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 the guitars he used on the last tour arre incredible! double cut les paul junior and a double cut les paul special. i would kill for those. also the gibson es335 (the one he plays for american eulogy on AAF) i think its a 57? les paul junior he uses also, same one from the warning era. those guitars are pure sex.
LudeBoy Posted April 5, 2011 Posted April 5, 2011 I like Jason's semi hollow body acoustic its a gibson es 335 with a fishman bridge (hidden puckup)

Green Day's listed on both the Ernie Ball and GHS websites, so it could be either one. When he was younger (younger as in Dookie era), up until Nimrod he used the Super Slinkies. I read it somewhere in a magazine. At least I think that's what I read. I love his Melody Maker he used at Lollapalooza '94. Never saw it after that. Don't know much about it either, but it sounded pretty. Anyone see his 2003 reissue SG Juniors on the second leg of the North American tour? He used the yellow one and the black one at my show... They were fuckin' beautiful! Billie has a very nice selection of guitars. I think Jason is a bit bland on his choices, but he does have nice guitars.
billiejoephil Posted April 9, 2011 Posted April 9, 2011 Billie's Les Paul Juniors are amazing! + Gibson Les Paul Junior Ebony + Gibson Les Paul Junior Satin (or TV?!) Yellow and of course + Gibson Les Paul Junior '57 Vintage Sunburst (= FLOYD!) I also love Blue (of course ) and his ES-335 in black and sunburst. Another awesome guitar: Billie's acoustic he uses in the encores!!! : Gibson J-180 Everly Brothers Version... The sound is awesome!
Sanity Loan Posted April 12, 2011 Posted April 12, 2011 Here is a terrible review about Billie's "new" acoustic model from Gibson. Pretty harsh review. And I don't think he's a GD fan.... http://blogs.sfweekly.com/shookdown/2011/04/billie_joe_armstrongs_new_sign.php This is the comment I posted on the story: "This Green Day signature guitar is an acoustic (but have you heard their last two records?)." Have YOU? There is an acoustic layer on almost every track and in almost every riff. That gives the last two records their unbelievable sound. The acoustic layer is very prominant in "Holiday," "Know Your Enemy," "Homecoming," "Wake Me Up...,".... need I say more? Not to mention, the acoustic encore at a Green Day show is one of the best parts of the whole show. Just Billie and his acoustic. Brings tears to a lot of people, including myself.
