Nickofsuburbia Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I'm not 100% clear on what is going on but it seems like Jason is becoming a larger and larger part of the Green Day process i guess I know that Billie asked him to be in the band a while ago but Jason turned him down and chose to continue being back-up guitar on tour and doing his own stuff elsewhere, but the recent tweet from Billie and all the involvement that Jason has had in the music videos of this past album make me think differently. So basically my questions are: 1. Is Jason IN the band? 2. If not, why all the help in the music-making process (as mentioned in the Billie tweet)
GreenRanger Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I think this came up when they were recording 21CB, and Jason said he wasn't an official member and that he doesn't really participate in the writing process besides popping in from time to time. I'm pretty sure only Billie, Mike, and Tre play on the albums (except pianos and such in some cases). As for why he's being mentioned in the tweet...my first answer is that the four of them are allowed to play together. My second, and far funner, answer is that maybe they're working on new Hot Tubs stuff or something. Either way, hearing that they're all playing together is good news, and I'm sure they'll call Jason a member if they feel the need to...but they haven't done it in ten years so...
Nickofsuburbia Posted March 16, 2011 Author Posted March 16, 2011 oh wow totally forgot about FBHT in that case but still Jason seems like he's a major component in how things are run between producing albums
TaylorKlinke Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Jason is always included in Green Day stuff but I don't think he wants to be considered an "official" member just because of how long ago Green Day got started, etc.
Laura! Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 If it's FBHT then wouldn't Jason F and Kevin Preston be there too?
GreenRanger Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 If it's FBHT then wouldn't Jason F and Kevin Preston be there too? True. It was just something hopeful that crossed my mind. It's really an atypical line-up for either of them...Could be anything...
Alan86 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Jason isn't an official member, he doesnt play guitar on the albums, However I wouldn't mind at all if he did become an official member and I hope he never ever leaves the bands live show line up I like to think of him as the unofficial 4th member of Green Day
gnash Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I would assume Jason is playing the new songs with them to help them work out how the songs will sound live, after all GD's sound has grown past the point of only one guitar being sufficient. While he's integral to the current GD, he is still essentially an 'extra' with no control over the creative process other than perhaps the odd suggestion. I think both Jason and the band know that Green Day has been known as a three-piece for longer than a hell of a lot of their fans have been alive, and instinctively people don't like change. Plus the obvious benefit that Jason can live his life without being mobbed whenever he appears in public (see BJA on Broadway), becoming an official member would surely change that
Jacob. Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Jason has been part of Green Day since 1994, when he appeared in When I Come Around. He probably doesn't want to be an official member because the band's been 3 guys for so long.
Fuzz Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Jason has never come across as the type of guy that needs to be an official member to feel welcome. He's a friend, they play music together, he does as much as they want him to and the guys like working with him. I'd say he's a part of Green Day, but there are lots of people who are a part of Green Day that aren't considered to be official members (like Chris Dugan, Bill Schinder, etc.)
Of Rage and Love Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Jason has been part of Green Day since 1994, when he appeared in When I Come Around. He probably doesn't want to be an official member because the band's been 3 guys for so long. He was in the video in 94, but last year at the Camden show Billie said "Jason has been with Green Day since 2000." I completely agree with Andres.
Jacob. Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 He was in the video in 94, but last year at the Camden show Billie said "Jason has been with Green Day since 2000." I guess I was saying he was related to the band since 1994, but started getting involved later.
GreenRanger Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Foo Fighters - Franz Stahl (between the second album and this one, when he's officially a member again) Are you thinking of Pat Smear? Or do I not know about Franz Stahl? (I know that's not the point of the post, but just checkin.)
XxRedundantCastaway86xX Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 No, Jason is not an official member of the band. In the studio Billie, Mike, and Tre are the only people getting recorded (except in some cases like the beginning of Peacemaker etc). Billie writes and composes all the guitar parts on albums and before a tour Billie gives Jason a list of songs and a few weeks to learn them. Up until the tweet today however, I haven't heard of Jason helping to work out new songs. Up until now it's just been Mike, Billie, and Tre writing and working out new material so I'm curious about that myself. If Jason ends up writing any guitar licks for the new album though I'm sure he'll be credited. In my opinion I don't think Jason will ever be a full fledged member of the band, he's simply a good friend who supports them on tours, and now possibly someone who may help write a few songs with them.

Yea thats what confused me too again could be FBHT stuff tho just have to wait and see i guess
Hermione Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 ^ Just because he's playing new songs with them it doesn't mean he's helping write them or playing on recordings. He's a friend of their's and they're jamming in the studio together - I'm sure Green Day have been doing that with their musician friends when making albums ever since the band started. Just part of being a band/working on songs/making albums/being in a studio.
captain peroxide Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Plus they've been writing since they went on tour. Billie probably wrote these songs and now everyone's jamming on them to see how they'd feel live.
Hermione Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Yeah, this tweet doesn't change anything. He will've been around in the studio and jamming new songs with them for years and years, it's business as usual. His role with regards to Green Day is the same as ever.

They're all pretty incredible musicians and really good friends, it's a bit silly to think they don't show each other what they're working on and get input from each other. I think there's no way for us to know exactly how much Jason has influenced in the past.
Emilie Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I saw this thread and got so excited. But, I still don't think he'll ever officially join.
bollard_11 Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 Jason White is Green Day. The other 3 are just puppets used to disguise the real brains behind the operation :ninja:
Harriet Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I think Jason is probably happy enough where he is. He gets to tour, play all the shows, but he doesn't do all the photoshoots and interviews and other crap that comes with being so famous. Personally I think he's got the best job in the world.
Minority_GD Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I think if Jason wanted to be called a member of the band then he'd be. He's Billie Joe's best friend and to me & every other big gd fan, he IS a member of the band just like Freese and Matika. They're probably all jammin' together and I can imagine Jason bringing in some great ideas for for the guitar parts. He probably enjoys not getting recognized and molested everywhere he's going...
Vaso.Of.Suburbia Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 No he's not an official member and I don't think that he's gonna be. He plays with the guys just because they are his friend and he helps them. Also, he's not that kind of person who wants to be a known rockstar etc. He just plays because he likes it...
littlegirl-of-suburbia Posted March 16, 2011 Posted March 16, 2011 I think that Jason is awesome as HELL... without him Green Day wouldn't be as fantastic at concerts. I think that he really doesn't mind the fact that he's not an "official member"... he gets to meet fans and play at gigs but doesn't do band interviews (or not many), so in the public eye he's just the back up guitarist... Most people don't give him enough credit. Any way Rock on Jason!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
