koolkev Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 It seems like mikes bass is getting quieter as the albums get more recent. Is it just me?
ifmemoryserves Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I don't think it's just you. I've heard this as a common complaint.
ThisIsNotNora Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 I miss the "bass solos" in f. example: Castaway and Longview...
koolkev Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 Samples? American Idiot. Or is it just that he plays the same notes as Billie?.... I miss the "bass solos" in f. example: Castaway and Longview... YEAH older stuff had more of mike soloing
Hermione Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I suppose it's just the more stuff there is going on in a song the less an individual instrument is gonna stand out. There's so much more stuff going on in each song on AI and 21st CB so the bass ends up being less prominent in amongst it all. Plus they made the guitar sound much bigger/more of the main focus on those albums. Can't beat the bass on Dookie . Billie once said something like on Dookie Mike's basslines kind of answer his vocals, the bass stands out as much as the vocals and they go back and forth between each other. I really like that description. Obviously there's more layers to their music now but it'd be cool to hear his basslines made a bit more prominent sometimes, or maybe a solo once in a while.
SetOnOverdrive Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I think Mike is just playing bass as a more of a part of the Rhythm section and letting Jason/Bille take the lead. Y'know the bass is just sitting in the background keep the pace going. I prefer it.

That's fine for the most part but it'd be nice to have the bass part made more prominent sometimes, just to showcase Mike's skills. We still get drum solos from Tre so I don't see why not. Like, playing bass on Dookie on Rockband is so much fun , all these really interesting twiddly bits. On the new albums it's just duh duh duh duh duh duh duh (or should that be dirnt dirnt dirnt ). The songs are fantastic of course, they don't need more bass. But knowing what a great bass player Mike is I know I'd really enjoy a song that showcased it.

I hate to say this but he really is doing what a bassist should be doing, Along with Tre, They are both the backbone of the band. They keep the tracks held together. Keep the pace going. Meh, I don't know. Maybe its a different Mix Engineer. I know Chris Lord Alge did AI and 21stCB. I don't know who did they earlier ones though. that could be the answer.
Doris The Spider Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I miss his bass. I can't really hear it in the new stuff. I like being able to listen to Dookie and Insomniac and hearing his great basslines.
green day is Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 JoS has a bass solo, if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, the bass got quieter from Kerplunk!'s Welcome to Paradise to Dookie's.

But bass players should be more than that. idk unless you understand where I'm coming from it's hard to understand.
lizziebix Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Bastard of 1967 has had some very interesting comments on the lack of Mike's bass in other song/album threads. Can't wait until he sees this threads and comments!

But bass players should be more than that. idk unless you understand where I'm coming from it's hard to understand. I think it's a bit of both. They're part of the rhythm section and helping keep the rhythm of the song is a big part of what they do. But they can be more than that as well most definitely. Think of Longview, it IS the bass!
SetOnOverdrive Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 AI and 21stCB are alot more "Produced" that previous GD albums. They sound much "bigger" than the previous albums and to get those epic sounds you have to add all the fancy guitar and vocal parts to fill it out and maybe that's just been a production decision with Butch & Rob on there respective albums that the drums and bass are there to keep the tracks moving. Both the drums and bass have there moments on the later stuff.
Melonhead Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 JoS has a bass solo, if I'm not mistaken. Compared to 1,039-Insomniac, the "solo" in JoS isn't really that much. It's 3 notes and that's it. They really need to let Mike showcase his skills a bit more.

It's not really much of a stretch for Mike to only use three in his solo.
ParadoxAndPlaid Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 This is unfortunately true for many bands who have gone for a 'bigger sound'. -Like American Idiot was compared to previous albums- Certain instruments, bass especially, seem to get drowned out. I don't think he is literally getting quieter though, his sound is just lost in all the hubbub of all the other sounds. I do really miss when Mike's solos were all out, I feel like he's holding back a little in his more recent solos. There is no doubt the man can play the shit out of his instrument. Hearing him play live is mind blowing. Definitely is loud and clear in person.
Rebel07 Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I see where everyone is coming from but I do miss the loud bass, especially from Kerplunk
SetOnOverdrive Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 LOUD LOUD LOUD LOUD LOUD LOUD! Y'all know he can still play awesome basslines without it being loud right? It would seem he chooses not too.
DorkWithAFork Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I see where everyone is coming from but I do miss the loud bass, especially from Kerplunk I loved the bass on Kerplunk. Kerplunk is my favorite album I'm just hoping for more bass solos on the new record.
Clayish Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Its deffinetley missed, but the bass lines in Peacemaker and especially Little Girl are fantastic.
greendepent Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I think that the basses that he uses has some fault too. For me, the Fenders doesnt sound great and strong as the Gibson G3 used to sound. Mixers and producers has some fault too.
