lastnightonGDA Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I've been wondering how Billie picks who will sing the end of Know your Enemy, Knowledge, east jesus nowhere, Longview, guitar player for JOS and other random people he picks to come up. Do you guys think its totally random? I've realized that a lot of people he chooses have that 'punk look' if you will. Yknow, Mohawks, colored hair etc. That may just be a coincidence though... How do you guys think he chooses people?
Amanda Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 People he'd like to shag, most likely. Someone had to say it...
Lu. Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I think he chooses those who make instant contact with him in the moment, like. I don't know how to explain it, I haven't been to a GD concert so I haven't seen it with my own eyes but I think he chooses those who, as you said, sing along and seem more involved in the whole atmosphere he tries to create. I don't think the looks have something to do, I don't think Billie would pay any attention to that either, it may be just coincidence. If I was in his place, I'd do the exact thing: pick those who are singing along, and demonstrate real interest in what's going on. Well, I guess everybody does. but there are always some "posers" or whatever hanging around. Edit: I forgot, having some weird hairdo does help , but for standing out of the crowd rather than for anything else. I mean, I don't think he picks this guy cause "oh I like this hair it looks good onstage", it's good for pointing him/her out instantly.
ganis Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 He picks people that catches his attention I suppose, so if you have a crazy hair style or something, you're standing out from the rest of the crowd... and therefore he is more likely to see you, and pick you
solongfromthestars Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I think he picks whoever he thinks is most likely to be able to play/sing the song, like whoever's really been rocking out to everything. I also noticed he seems to try to get somebody who's actually from the place they're playing in. But I guess it's quite random and standing out does help
Mommy's Little Nightmare Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I think he picks whoever catches his attention and looks interesting to him.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I think whoever catches his attention, and that could be in any way. Having a crazy hairstyle (brightly coloured), going crazy during the concert, people with signs... I mean, there's couple hundred people in the first few rows, he probably just picks someone who catches his attention among all those fans. I don't think he chooses them completely at random, but I'm pretty sure he doesn't go "ohh that person would look good on stage, imma pick him!". And not everyone is eager to get on stage either, so he probably also picks a person who looks like they really want to go on stage. At Pinkpop for Longview, the guy who was picked had bright green hair, and I had a sign plus I'd been singing along very enthusiastically all night with every single song. But in Rotterdam, he picked a very regular looking girl for Longview. So I don't think it's about whether you have a specific look. I think it's just a matter of whether you catch his attention in whatever way, and whether you look like you could and really want to do it, like going crazy and stuff. I don't know. I also think there are more people with the "punk look" at a Green Day concert than on the average street, so you are always going to get more people with that looked being picked out as well, haha.
Comedy & Tragedy Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Whoever's really getting into the show. When I saw them, I was singing all the way through, and there was quite a lack of people singing the old songs. So I guess he was looking mostly at the people who did know the older stuff. I don't really have that kind of "punkish" look (nor am I the type of person that Billie would do ), so that's really the only way I can think of it. And having a sign helps
jake smith Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 well when its EJN he usually looks for a kid. Longview i'm guessing he looks for people who have been singing along to every song
Mommy's Little Nightmare Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 At the Hartford show, he picked my friend Amber because he wanted to see what her tattoos were. XD
NoVaCaInE! Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Well I had a sign, plus people around me were pointing at me (and over the other side of the catwalk too), and the second he turned my way I just pressed my hands together with my sign showing and went "PLEASE?!". Thankfully he looked at me right that second and asked me if I knew how to do it But I dunno, actually. I really can't comprehend why he actually picked me, or why he picks anyone. I read an article that said he picks people from the vibe he gets from them or something.
Undómiel Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I don't know... what I do know though is that every time I've been to show and it's come to the bit where's he picking someone, even though he would never pick me because I'm pretty boring to look at, I always cast my eyes down and think to myself "not me, not me, not me"... I know you've got to look enthusiastic so I do the opposite. I would die if I got pulled up on stage.
Hermione Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 He's looking for someone who looks confident and enthusiastic so they'll be entertaining on stage, that's what it's all about. I think that's why he seems more likely to pick people with crazy hair and stuff, they're just more likely to be confident. And obviously he has to actually SEE you, so having a sign is a huge plus, almost essential. My sister was holding her Longview sign up right near the front at Wembley but we could see he never even saw it as his eyes scanned the crowd, just bad luck that he didn't happen to see it. So without a sign chances must really be slim. That's just Longview though haha. I'm thinking it's a lot more random for Know Your Enemy and Are We The Waiting or anything else where you don't really have to do anything, just looking enthusiastic would do for that.
AnnA™ Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Anyone that stands out a little? Although a lot of people will go for crazy looks and stuff at these shows. I’m sure signs help, and like someone said he probably looks for someone confident enough, who’s been singing along a lot and seems to know their songs well. But then I’ve no idea. I’ve had a bit of eyecontact with both Billie and Tré in their search for volunteers, but the only way I think I stood out was how I was one of the few who didn’t shove my hands in the air and begged to be picked. I honestly wouldn’t get up there even if I had the chance. No way.
EvanAsFuck Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I think it's really just whoever gets his attention... Whoever's rocking out the hardest and singing their hearts out in the crowd... Like for me, I just loose it out there, which probably helped! I bet he also looks for people that look like they're hardcore fans, or like people with Dookie/Kerplunk shirts and stuff like that... Not really sure though? I remember this kid who got pulled up for JOS who got Billie's attention because he was wearing a Husker Du shirt (one of Billie's all time favorite bands)...
madddie Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 People who stand out, or freak out Also when Ali got on stage, she had this flag and ages before he picked her, he was reading that flag and laughing really hard. Its said "PLAY FBHT...One more time one more time on more time.... CHUMP CHUMP CHUMP" He found it funny
Slappy. Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 I think like most people have said, he probably just picks the the ones who catch his attention the most. Maybe someone he has previously seen in the audience, that was singing along to all the words, because then obviously they wouldn't stand there on stage like uuuh what!?
Khaleesi. Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 He knows who the GDC-ers are he did say he knew me, so...
lastnightonGDA Posted February 4, 2011 Author Posted February 4, 2011 he did say he knew me, so... really?and yeah, someone said something about other band tshirts. I remember him bringing someone with a Queen shirt up... idk if he brought him up because of that or anything but I could see Billie being a Queen fan (does anyone know?)

I got pulled up for are we the waiting and i don't have bright coloured hair or really stand out that much and neither did my friend who got picked the night before. I might have imagined it but i was quite gutted the night before that my friend had been up and i though 'what the fuck chances are i'm not going to get picked tonight so i'm gunna have the best fucking night of my life' when foxboro hot tubs came out at first and the majority of people areound me weren't singing and in the opening song came on i was practically hanging over the barrier and just screaming every word, i dunno he just seemed to look in the general direction that my friends and i were in and made some eye contact during the first few songs. Then when are we the waiting came on he walked over and picked me. Coincidence? maybe but i'd like to think it was the fact that he noticed that i was really into the show. i don't think my feet actually touched the floor once fht's came out i was hanging over the barrier that much ='} I also think signs and that help, but to me i think he goes more for those who really look like there going for it. And i also think he has a general idea of who he wants to get up within the first few songs. But thats just my theory =} could be completely wrong
Wet socks traumatize me Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Next GD gig, I totally bring a "PICK A GDCER!" banner.
Khaleesi. Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 really? haha, yeah. he was like "hey, i know you!" and then pulled me up.
Wet socks traumatize me Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 haha, yeah. he was like "hey, i know you!" and then pulled me up. I hope you're kidding, Carling. (rhymes!)
