"As a follow-up to his “American Idiot” musical now on Broadway, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong said on Sunday night that he’d like to try his hand at creating an original musical with the director of “American Idiot,” Michael Mayer. The two men, interviewed as part of The Times’s Arts & Leisure Weekend, said they had no definite plans, but Mr. Armstrong rhapsodized frequently about this first experience with theater — creating “American Idiot” with Mr. Mayer (“Spring Awakening”) and now performing in the show through late February as the malevolent character St. Jimmy."

It also talks about the AI movie!

So yeah what do you guys think!?!? ...

I don't know what to think.

Theatre is awesome but... what about GD? I don't want that to take a backseat just because he's caught the theatre bug....

Hmmmm, I didnt think of it in that way.

But I'm sure he wouldnt let anything get in the way of him and the band.

I think it's great that he keeps going into "uncharted areas", being a rookie and all that stuff. And it IS a punk thing to do.

I'm fine with as long as Green Day is always his main priority.

But it would steal alot of his time. And maybe even ideas he would have put in a GD instead of a theatre.

He's Billie Joe. He can do both, quite easily.

He's not superman. Yeah he's an incredible guy and has done amazing things but I don't know... I can see him getting neck deep in theatre and being more than a little reluctant to return to Green Day stuff because he's having so much fun... :/

(this would be better off in GD Chat)

I think that would be very cool, especially the musical (although I would never see it :(). I would love to see a musical (partially) written by Billie. And the movie could be cool as well.

Funny, the last part: "On the matter of playing St. Jimmy in a film, Mr. Armstrong smiled and shrugged and said nothing, but Mr. Mayer piped in: “I think that’s a no-brainer.”"

Because frankly, I have no idea.

Does this man ever stop?

Yeah, this. While I am a little worried about him getting caught up in all sorts of other things, he can probably pull it off doing both. It's not like he ever takes breaks anyway

If Mike can help make a new Frustrators record, and Tre can do whatever he wants, Idk, play golf or something, then Billie Joe can do what he wants as well. Creating an original musical. Why not. If he wants to do that, then that's great. :D

I'd love to see this happen, I'd probably have a chance of actually seeing it if it takes a few years as well. The band were all working on American Idiot and 21CB at the same time and that worked out fine, Billie is perfectly capable of working on a musical and working on an album at the same time. He's said in interviews that he's writing songs every night in NY so clearly he has enough free time. It's not as if he'd be directing the musical anyway, he'd be writing music and co-writing the story, he's already proven he can do that and Green Day at the same time.

Moving to Green Day chat.

Yeah, Billie has one crazy work ethos.

A guys gotta do what a gusy gotta do i guess.

Good point, but American Idiot wasn't writing from scratch, though, this would be.

For the rest I completely agree with you and I'm positive he could do both, but I just wanted to say that it's not quite the same.

Misleading article. All he did was say yeah he'd be interested in it when he was asked about it - he's said the same thing before so this isn't even anything new. He's just being positive and open to doing new things like he always is. This article is exaggerating things to try and make some news where there is none.

However if he does ever decide to do something like that, good for him! His level of ambition is inspiring and to be admired. And exploring different things and pushing himself as an artist can only be a good thing for Green Day too.

I think if he wants to, he's totally able to pull it off. But I wouldn't worry too much about the possible GD conflict, I mean, I know it'd take a lot of time to throw himself into creating a musical from scratch, but just like he's made clear a bunch of times, he is Green Day, and it's been his life and it's such a huge part of him, so I wouldn't expect him to neglect Green Day or anything, because if it came to it, I think he'd choose Green Day (hands down) above Broadway/musicals.

On another subject, if the movie version happens, I'd be happy to see the OBC on it, sort of like what was done for the Rent movie.

I think that sounds awesome, Billie, as we all know, writes amazing music, and I think that he and MM would be able to create an amazing musical together..

Green Day better be first priority though ;)

Oh well, we all know that little man is a true workaholic(selling?) so I suppose he would be able to do both at the same time, and do better than great on both...

Yeah, I forgot about that actually :P It'd probably take longer to create than American Idiot seeing as he has to write all the songs for it. I wonder if Mike and Tre would be involved in the music writing as well, or if that would be the orchestrator's (if that's even the right title) job.

I think it's a natural thing. I mean, he has been in this band since he was a teenager. I almost think it's strange that he hasn't done more things like this before. My guess is that his love for Green Day has pretty much overshadowed everything else that he potentially could be doing. I don't think he regrets spending so much time "being" Green Day, but I think it's refreshing for him to have some other projects on the side. My 2 Swedish crowns.

I would love to see Billie making something like that, really! I'm not afraid of that he might be more active with this kind of Broadway-projects than Green Day. He's a professional in this kind of business and (I think) Green Day will be always number one for him, no matter how many side projects he would have. Billie Joe writing an original musical would be very lovely and interesting to see. And YES, I really hope to see the American Idiot musical -movie some day!

I think if any of these things actually did happen it wouldn't get in th way of Green Day. They had four/five years gap before 21cb when they were doing other things so I think this is kind of the same. The more they do the better I think, it's something to keep us entertained between albums. :)

There better be some nudity involved. If not, a definite no no.

I hope he'll focus on making music though.

i've always though that making AI the musical into a film would be pretty cool...

billies turning into a broadway junkie
