mallorymaloney Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 First off, I didn't start this thread to cause shit. I just genuinely wanna know if any other Green Day fans have a similar opinion to mine ... As very unpopular and possibly 'politically incorrect' it may be to have. Alright, so with that disclaimer down, here's the topic subject: Is anyone else getting tired of the way Green Day's 'eco friendliness' is being pushed a little too far as of late? This topic was inspired by the annoyance I felt when I found out that Rolling Stone recently featured Green Day in a list of 'Top Eco Friendly Rock Stars'. While there's nothing wrong with being eco friendly --- On the contrary, it's fantastic --- I kinda believe that the actual members of Green Day themselves aren't all that focused on being kind to the Earth every moment of their lives, and yet many magazines, and organisations, and even fellow fans seem to think that the meaning of the band name no longer refers to smoking pot, and instead refers to each of the guys suddenly donning these rocktastic Captain Planet capes and running around screaming, 'THE POWER IS YOURS!' In reality, the guys aren't. And don't. Sure, they're conscious of global warming and recycling and going green and all that good stuff, but I recall a recent interview where Billie was put on the spot and asked what he does differently now that he's eco friendly, and he couldn't seem to come up with anything other than, 'Well, y'know, nobody's, y'know ... Perfect ...' whilst shifting all about in a twitchy sort of way. ((If anyone has a link to this interview, please to be a'posting it, as I can't remember which one it is!)) And let's face it, Green Day's concerts are probably one of the least environmentally friendly things around, haha. All those trucks, and tour buses, and the gathering of large groups of littering/heat emitting people, and the usage of tonnes of electricity, and I may be wrong, but isn't pyro technically harmful to the Earth ...? Again, I love what the guys do do to help the Earth, but imagine if they were as eco friendly as everyone thinks they are? Touring would pretty much be out of the question if that were the case! So, what d'you guys think? Are you, too, getting annoyed with the way Green Day's 'econess' is being pushed lately, or are you in favour of it? And d'you think Green Day are just as enviro friendly as everyone makes out, or are they really not all that fussed about it ...? Opinions, let's share 'em!
November's Storms Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 You asked for my opinion, and it is that I honestly don't feel too bothered by this either way
Peace and Rainbows Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 You asked for my opinion, and it is that I honestly don't feel too bothered by this either way agreed, besides, tehy are better than some other people
Beathe. Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Are you, too, getting annoyed with the way Green Day's 'econess' is being pushed lately, or are you in favour of it? I haven't noticed anything except the article from Rolling stone magazine (that I can't remember at least). Maybe I haven't payed enough attention. And d'you think Green Day are just as enviro friendly as everyone makes out, or are they really not all that fussed about it ...? I can't really say that I care.
Guest Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I never really thought about it. But yeah, I agree.
Ellenkc Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I don't think anyone really thinks they're super environmentalists, at least no one that I've come across. Most people do assume the name Green Day is about the environment, but that's fair enough, pot isn't the first thing that would come to mind if someone was talking about a green day to me. The band does make an effort to be environmentally conscious do, which is why they're on those lists. They have the NRDC site, they had the Earth Day thing on Fuse and I remember they had a contest for some concert earlier on this year where they got people to volunteer to clean up beaches in Cali and gave them free tickets. Obviously the band has a huge carbon footprint, but they do their bit.
November's Storms Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 The only thing I would be annoyed about I guess is people taking the bands name out of context
Izzard Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I think I heard Billie mention in an interview that his wife is more Green minded and he just kind of goes by that...so i guess in a way he's just pussy whipped I'm sure they care...I think in a sense we all care...but I don't think it's the top most important thing in their life. You do what you can..
maz17 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I guess they arent super eco-friendly - I haven't looked at the article on the most eco-friendly bands, but im guessing that none of them are really completely dedicated to saving the planet. I think the Green Day + NRDC campaign was good, and while I think Green Day are doing what they can, they aren't pushing it and certainly dont want to seem like that is all they care about. I don't think it bothers me too much though
farley drexel hatcher Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I haven't noticed anything other than that rolling stone article, and I don't know any fans who think their name is about being Eco friendly. If anything it feels like the band have tried to distance themselves from it a bit, because they know they're no more eco friendly than the next person. That said I think they are conscious of it, but in a realistic way. Like how they used to do earth hour or whatever its called. But yeah, if people are choosing to make more if it than the band is, then that is their problem.
solongfromthestars Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I do agree, but it isn't annoying me yet. I don't really know any other bands who are supposed to be eco-friendly, but I'm guessing the hype about it is probably because most bands don't even acknowledge econess and Green Day do, even if it's not the most important thing in their lives? I don't know.
jtdscape Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I don't feel that them being eco friendly is being over published at all. The only recent news about Green Day being eco friendly was in the Rolling Stone list that I posted on GDA. The last time that Green Day did something that was directly connected to the NRDC was when Billie recorded a video for them in 2009. I feel that even if Green Day isn't environmentally friendly themselves they are still helping out by getting the word out about the environment. If one person watched the NRDC videos and took it to heart and changed their lifestyle to be more eco friendly they have done their job. Some magazine articles do say that the name Green Day is for the environment but that is just miscommunication.
Boston Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I don't think the eco-friendly thing is being pushed down our throats - Green Day/NDRC stopped being "active" ages ago...
luvgirlcl Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I don't know if I haven't been as aware as the rest of you, but besides de RS list, I haven't heard much 'green' talk in relation to the band in the last few months or the last year. Of course I know about them and the NRDC, but besides that, I haven't heard much. So I guess that maybe it could be an image more exploited by the media than the guys themselves. On the other hand, from what I've read, there are lots of ways that you can be eco-friendly, specially at home, recycling and stuff. But even if there's been advances in the ways that you can help, most ways are for home and big companies and businesses, and I think it gets a bit more difficult for the cases of big music tours (correct me if I'm wrong, though). You have to fly if you want to go to Europe/South America/Australia/Asia (although, you could take a bus or a boat, but it would take a loooong time ), so you have to use planes. To move equipement, you have to use busses and the trucks. What I've heard of though it's some sort of energy generators that are eco-friendly that help generate clean energy for movie sets and the like, so maybe it could help for the tours, and who knows if there are pyrotechnics that are less harmful to the enviroment and more clean? My guess is that they do the best they can to go green, specially during the tours, but there's only so much they can do.
Adeline.Hearts.You Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 The only thing I would be annoyed about I guess is people taking the bands name out of context I'll agree with that. But tbh I don't really mind. But if it gets kids or anyone more acitve in an environmental sense then, its can't really be a bad thing.
greendaytone Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I echo many of the sentiments above, in that i wouldn't blame Green Day for not being echo friendly enough themselves. They're doing their job simply by raising peoples awareness about the environment. They're in a position where a small amount of effort on their part can have a much bigger impact on the people who listen to them. All the talk of their 'eco-friendliness' lately has mainly come from other sources, not by the band themselves, so it's not like they are 'plugging' themselves all the time. Interesting topic, kudo's for that
euphoric-pareidolias Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 they're human, they'll do whatever they can to look after the world the same as everyone else but at the end of the day, they're musicians and with all their tours etc, they wont stop them just to appear more eco friendly but why should they, music is their life. personally i don't think its being pushed too far, i think it's a topic that should be left alone because people aren't questioning how the public are helping the earth so why should green day be questioned just cos theyre known.... If Green Day want to promote awareness on the subject, well done to them but other sources shouldnt judge them on whether they themselves are or not... just my opinion anyway
Punx89 Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I never thought about this,I don't bother with their eco friendly action though..
oda Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I find that people usually don't take celebrities seriously when it comes to supporting good causes in general. Take the new We Are The World for example. Alot of people don't take it seriously, and think the celebs are only doing it to make their name shine. And thats kind of how i feel too. I mean, i do think the members of green day actually care, but when it comes to anybody else i find it hard to belive that it's genuine. Thats why i also find it sort of embarrasing that green day also is joining the club, if you know what i mean
gdpony Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I also don't really think this has been pushed, as many of you have said, the only news we've gotten about this recently is the Rolling Stone article. And yeah the only eco friendly thing they might do is lending their name for a campaign like this, which in my opinion is great. Most of us wouldn't even know about NRDC if it wasn't for Green Day. the guys support a lot of great causes actually, Im proud of them
Isabel Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I thought Adrienne was the one who was more involved in the whole NRDC thing and Green Day was just trying to help create awareness of it...
musse Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 Well, I come from a very green family and I've been taught to recycle and use public transport (sometimes we don't use our private car for weeks) and turn off the lights when I leave the room and all that, so I think it's great GD too are aware of environmental issues. It doesn't mean they should be perfect and not harm the environment at all, what matters is the fact that they know that being eco friendly is important and they spread the word. Okay, not very actively, but still. If every GD fan paid at least a little attention to environmental issues, we wouldn't save the world but we wouldn't be the first ones to destroy it either. (It's fucking annoying when people think 'Green Day' refers to their eco friendliness. GTFO...)
The Snark Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 The only thing I would be annoyed about I guess is people taking the bands name out of context That could actually be a good thing, though. Imagine how many parents out there wouldn't let their kids listen to GD if they knew the real meaning of their name. It doesn't bother me at all and seems kind of like a one off sort of thing. If they want to lend their name to a few organizations, I say good for them for using their status to help raise awareness. Besides, isn't it Adrienne who's more into the whole eco-friendly thing, since she co-wrote that one book...
Juliette Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 I wasn;t even aware that they were promoted as an eco friendly group
Harinezumi Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 There's nothing wrong about raising awareness, as long as you don't act like a fucking saint. I don't think GD is trying to make themselves look good by supporting a cause, I think they're doing it because they know a lot of people will listen.
