Green Day for Dummies

Alright guys. Recently, different members of my family, and even some of my friends, have started to realize that my dedication to Green Day isn't just a phase...and that half the time they don't know what I'm referencing when I talk about them. In short, I have them wondering what's so great about this band. A few of them have asked for CDs, which I'm pretty excited about, but here's the problem: I have no idea what songs to put on the CDs. Choosing 20 or so of my "favorite" songs, or ones that are most representative of Green Day's "style", is proving much more difficult than I thought.

This is where you lovely people come in: I need suggestions of a playlist of up to 20 songs that you would give someone who only knew "American Idiot" and "Good Riddance" as far as Green Day goes, and wanted to expand their horizons. Consider it a challenge.

I tried this before, for my friends, we were exchanging song lists of our respective favourite bands. I ended up with a 30+ song list and my friends saying "oh well never mind I'll just download the albums."

Sorry, that's not really helping, haha.

Just buy International Superhits! for them.

I think you should take songs form each cd...just to show how wide their sound is. Cause, y'know, Peacemaker is totally different of 2,000 Light Years Away or When It's Time. :) But, you also should put popular songs like BOBD or 21 Guns.

Good luck with that!

Posted

Maybe you should pick the songs that most people instantly like. Like hitchin a ride, she, welcome to paradise and such.

EDIT: oh, and east jesus nowhere! I think anybody would like that song. (exept maybe very religious people)

Choosing at least one of each album, I would go with:

-Going to Pasalaqua

-Welcome to Paradise

-2000 LYA

-When I Come Around

-Burnout

-Stuart and the Ave

-Brain Stew

-Nice Guys Finish Last

-Scattered

-Hitchin a Ride

-Waiting

-Church on Sunday

-Letterbomb

4. Words I Might Have Ate

5. Good Riddance

I agree with taking songs from each CD, and putting some "popular" songs

For me, I found out that my mom likes Green Day's newer stuff, like AI and 21stCB. 21stCB was the first CD my mom actually listened to the entire thing and she said to me,"Usually in CD's there are only a few songs that are good, but all of [Green Day's] songs are actually pretty good." (my mom is now fairly knowledgeable about Green Day thanks to my sister and me) :D My aunt, who does not know a THING about music, has heard BOBD and thinks Green Day was around since 1994 (I was surprised haha). That was just my experience though, I think it all depends on who you're talking to.:P

I love these, do this all the time making top 10 playlists for my favourite bands, it fits in with my iTunes OCD I suppose.

I would go 10 songs, none of the more famous ones. You don't want to give them International Superhits! as I would say 99% of people who don't like Green Day will only have heard the singles, mainly from post American Idiot.

1. Going To Pasalacqua

2. Letterbomb

3. She

4. Stuck With Me

5. Nice Guys Finish Last

6. 86

7. Waiting

8. Having A Blast

9. Who Wrote Holden Caulfield?

10. Whatsername

Quite representative of their style I think.

give me novacaine, christie road and holiday can't be missing

Wow, that was tougher to do than I thought. It's sort of a sample, you know. Just pick songs that show the wide range and diversity of Green Day's music and you should be good.

EDIT: how could I forget Jesus of Suburbia? You HAVE to add JoS no matter what.

Posted

Definitely include Jesus of Suburbia and possibly Homecoming

I had to do this yesterday and put all of American Idiot on it because you can't break it up. but, do whatever! :)

Posted

Just let them listen to every record. Starting with 1,039SOSH and ending with 21CB. I think that's the best way for people who don't know anything about Green Day to hear what their music is like.

- Jesus of Suburbia

- Basket Case

- Welcome to Paradise

- Sassafras Roots

Well, it depends of who is this list for. If the person likes bands like Paramore I'd go with Wake me up when September ends, 21 guns or Holiday. If they like AC/DC maybe Take Back, Horseshoes and hangrenades. And if they like the Sex Pistols, something off Kerplunk maybe. But that's just for the beggining, I think that then you should give a list of every style that Green Day has touched, so my list would be:

1. Going to Pasalacqua

2. Who wrote Holden Caulfield?

3. She

4. Basket Case

5. Westbound Sign

6. Jaded

7. Redundant

8. Take Back

9. King for a Day

10. Good Riddance

11. Platypus

12. Misery

13. Minority

14. Waiting

15. JOS

16. She's a Rebel

17. Holiday

18. WMUWSE

19. 21st Century Breakdown

20. ¡Viva la Gloria!

21. ¿Viva la Gloria?

22. East Jesus Nowhere

They are 22, but I can't take away 2, I'm sorry :P

i agree that it is, but unfortunately a lot of people don't have the patience :(

Posted

Just buy International Superhits! for them.

agreed, that was my first album

Posted

Well it depends on what kind of music they like, so if they like more pop music try stuff from warning or if they like a bit of everything try nimrod. Then play them what ever you want

Posted

at first maybe just the singles, and watch the videos but defo the whole of AI front to back

Posted

you should include the songs that you usueally refrence, so they actueally know what you are talking about when you refrence green day.

also, put in a few of your personal favorites cuz why not! its green day!
