GDJonny Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Green Day have been rated 7th most over-rated acts in the world of music today on TopTenz. They were beaten by the likes of Justin Beiber, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Lil' Wayne, Gaga, and...the Jonas Brothers. Here: Top 10 Over Rated Acts in Music Today "When you ask someone if they like Green Day, one of two responses is typically offered: either a) yes or b) I liked old Green Day. The reason being that they used to make punk music as legitimate punks, and played all the power chords and walking bass lines you’d expect from a young 90’s punk rock band. Now, in the 10’s, they are overrated thanks to the commercial success of American Idiot. Know Your Enemy contains a simplistic three minute-long riff repetition that is too similar to Police on My Back to not be called plagiarism (kind of like how M.I.A. “sampled”- an industry euphemism for plagiarism- a loop from Straight to Hell off of Combat Rock). These guys apparently don’t realize that they are the enemy. It's not really slagging off Green Day, but more questioning their success. Your thoughts?
Eeefaa. Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Meh. The Beatles are my second favourite band and I'm constantly told that they're overrated too. I guess it just depends on what you like. Everyone has a different definition of "good" music, but there is no such thing as "good" music, there's just the music you like and the music you dont like.
DecanoLP Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 What a joke to a) put them on the samel level as Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus. b) judge them by one song.
Metanoia Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Meh. The Beatles are my second favourite band and I'm constantly told that they're overrated too. I guess it just depends on what you like. Kayfabe Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 American Idiot was comercially successful because it was an insanely good album, period. Know Your Enemy is quite overrated, though.
Stormy Haze Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Honestly, I don't care. I have stopped caring about what others have to say about them, there will always be one person that hates something, so really I couldn't care less. These guys apparently don’t realize that they are the enemy.
GDJonny Posted December 14, 2010 Author Posted December 14, 2010 I think this guy is getting Over-rated, and Over-played mixed up.
mallorymaloney Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 My response to these 'TopTenz' people:
Kayfabe Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 everyone in the comments agrees with us too
AnnA™ Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Couldn't care less about that... Always someone dissing them. Oh well. I will say though, the reason it's nothing to care about is the fact that he compares them to those artist. And using one song as an example. There's just no credibility in it. If anything, I think Green Day are underrated.
Bastard of 1967 Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Your thoughts? None of the other artists that Green Day got lumped in with in this review have a 22+ -year career backing them up. Overrated, overplayed, or not, nothing puts the critics and naysayers to shame -- or totally pisses them the f*ck off! -- like a band that grows and evolves over time, yet still remains popular and relevant. I would dare the reviewer to put money on who in that list will still have a career 5 years from now. Jonas is already has-been, Miley is well on her way to a LiLo-like implosion, and Cobain is, well, dead. I'd say the best prospects for long-term success (aside from Green Day) on his list are Taylor Swift and GaGa....like Green Day, both of these two have a broad appeal, some real talent, an excellent work ethic, and personal lives that aren't over the edge...well, maybe not GaGa but she seems to have a real good business sense and sense of self -- enough to keep her on "this side" of the edge in the same way that Billie Joe has. Ke$ha and Kanye are trendy hip-hop that's fitting a specific need that some people have *right now*. Problem with trendy is that 5 years down the road, if you can't evolve into the next fad, you disappear....as, I think, will these two. I've said it before, I'll say it again: someone needs to take a laxative and actually go to see a Green Day concert. Then maybe he'll figure out what he's missing.
pasalaska Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 I'm sorry, but they talk about how 'old' Green Day is better, and then bag 'new' Green Day for making riff-repetetive songs? have they actually heard 'old' Green Day? If he wants riff repetition, look back, not fowards in their career.
Vespertine Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 This over-rated thing is just a matter of opinion anyway. Who cares about TopTenz?
Kayfabe Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 This over-rated thing is just a matter of opinion anyway. Who cares about TopTenz? no one lol
Ellenkc Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Not to sound pretentious or whatever but I usually don't care what websites that replace 'S' with 'Z' think about bands I like. Half those bands aren't even over-rated anyway, they're just mindless pop and everyone knows that.

euphoric-pareidolias Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 i dont think they are but i guess it all depends on people's view and opinion on what good music is. If some people think they are, no point in arguing with them cos they obviously don't see what i see in green day's music
DecanoLP Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 The target of these articles is always the same: Attention because they know everyone will flame about this. Best thing we can do is ignore it. I bet, the author doesn't have an idea of old or new Green Day...
Catsername Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Your thoughts? By the thread title I thought you thought Green Day are overrated! *phew* Anyways, I think this is all opinion-based. It's really hard to make an unbiased list, and I'm constantly questioning myself whenever I judge something or call something "bad." Is it truly bad? Or do I just dislike it?
Marki. Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Over-Rated? Green Day?! Oh please. They put them behind Miley Cyrus, I can not take this seriously.
fadi_7 Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 This over-rated thing is just a matter of opinion anyway. Who cares about TopTenz? i agree with you
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Topwhatz? And "These guys apparently don’t realize that they are the enemy." TopTenz, just, go away, please. Sorry, but I'm not even going to respond to that. They judge them for being famous and having a song with a recurring guitar riff that sounds like one from another song, well, guess what, half today's songs are like that because there is only a limited amount of chords and combination in existence, and excuse them for making their living out of what they love, I'm sure they won't do it again now that the world-famous music whatever it is TopTenz has said that's a bad thing!
luvgirlcl Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Your thoughts? I think that this topic of discussion is over-rated. Seriously, it's like every 5 minutes something like this appears. It's getting old and lame.
Holly Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 Isn't it just what one guy, trying to get a big reaction, has written. Putting Justin Bieber and Miley Cyrus in the same list as Green Day and Nirvana is clearly ridiculous. Pffft, whatevs.
EvanAsFuck Posted December 14, 2010 Posted December 14, 2010 I'm so sick of these kind of people. Even with bands that I hate: If you don't like em', then you don't like em' and that's that...
