Gwen Stacy Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 Are there any songs Green Day has released that you think were on Cigarettes and Valentines? I have some theories -Shoplifter -Stay The Night -Olivia
BraedonHorbacio Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Too Much Too Soon was going to be on it.
bollard_11 Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Cigarettes and Valentines may also have been on it, cannot be certain on that though
green day is Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 What About Today Things I Heard Today Minnesota Girl This other one from the GD.com band messages I can't remember Some random unreleaseds from 2010 that could've been Dreamcatcher Drama Queen Olivia Stay the Night
Fuzz Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 You guys are basically just listing songs that didn't make it on American Idiot. Any reasons you guys think any of those songs could have been on there? I always felt like Shoplifter and Too Much Too Soon were definitely more AI feeling.
Velocity Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 ^ I know there was an interview that said that Too Much Too Soon was originally from Cigarettes and Valentines. I don't remember which interview, but I think that may have been the only song confirmed to be from that album.

With mine, I've sort of always believed that the GD.com message songs were going to be on C&V, considering they were released at the time they were working on C&V, but I was just following suite with the 2010 unreleased songs. ^ I know there was an interview that said that Too Much Too Soon was originally from Cigarettes and Valentines. I don't remember which interview, but I think that may have been the only song confirmed to be from that album. What about Cigarettes and Valentines itself?? Anyway, I'd love to see that interview.
Eldoon Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Billie mentioned that Too Much Too Soon was on Cigs and Valentines in a radio interview that was posted on GDA a while ago. I'd say that those old GD.com band message songs (What About Today, Things I Heard Today, and possibly Minnesota Girl) are the most likely contenders, as stuff like Shoplifter mentions Jimmy in the lyrics, so it seems like an AI outtake, and Governator seems more like a leftover Network song. Cigs and Valentines (the song) would obviously be a contender, since it's the "title track." From previous interviews (though I can't recall which specifically) it seems more likely that Olivia and Drama Queen were written after AI, since Drama Queen was originally on the 21CB tracklist, and there was some cursory interview where they mentioned Olivia as another 21CB era song. GD stockpiled tons of demos for both Cigs and Valentines/AI and 21CB (I remember reading an interview around the time AI came out where Billie mentioned they had demoed over 90 songs between 2003 and 2004 -- and in the post-AI period in 2006-2007 they've admitted to making "three albums worth" of material.) Part of me almost feels that Cigarettes and Valentines was never a completed, fullly tracked album, but just some early demos and tracking sessions that they were ultimately unhappy with and rejected. Stay the Night and Dreamcatcher always struck me as more recent songs, perhaps what they had been demoing in Europe on the 21CB tour, but that's just my theory.

Now that I think about it, Governator is sort of Networkish.... Actually, they admitted to having three albums worth BEFORE AI, in the band messages. I predict that they'll be on the next album.
Guest Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 I think they didn't release any music from C & V only the "cigarettes and valentines" live shoplifter, too much too soon is the remainder from AI
Eldoon Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 Found it! Billie mentions that Too Much Too Soon was a Cigs and Valentines song in this radio interview: http://www.greendayauthority.com/news/338/#disqus_thread Also, I totally didn't realize that the lyrics for Shoplifter were "you'll be caught stealin'" rather than "Jimmy's caught stealin'" -- totally changes how I saw the song, haha! I'd say that Shoplifter could be a contender for a Cigs and Valentines-era song now. Another song that I think fits the bill is Favorite Son! Pretty much any AI b-side (minus the live stuff, of course) is an open contender!

Pretty much any AI b-side (minus the live stuff, of course) is an open contender! Well, Favorite Son is actually about Bush and how he only went into office to please his dad. Thanks for the interview, I'll be watching it in just a minute‼ I think, if Jimmy was mentioned in Shoplifter, the best place would be "A 1, 2, 3, it's St. Jimmy, and not everything is free". Because that would sound amazing. [Edit:] Interview is pretty cool.

I always thought it was 'Jimmy's caught stealing' too *gasp* I do agree it could be a C&V era song, especially seeing as it's got acoustic guitar. It's more Warning-esque in that respect. I don't think Stay the Night is from C&V, it just doesnt feel right. It just sounds more 21CB than Warning to me... As for the GD.com recording songs, the more developed songs (with drums, bass etc rather than just Billie with an acoustic) could be, but the ones that are just Billie on an acoustic just sound more like Billie just jamming...

Stay the Night strikes me as recently written too. Billie seemed to be mumbling a lot of the lyrics in the clip we have, so either he just never got around to writing fleshed out ones (in the case that it is C&V era,) or it's an indication that the song is newer. The old GD.com board message songs do indeed sound like rough sketches. Just as a guess, I'd say those were live-in-studio, spontaneous recordings of the tracks, and I'm sure if we ever heard versions that were tracked for C&V they'd be a lot more fleshed out.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 I think Stay The Night is definitely possible. It does have that kind of vibe too it which I would think could be from C&V. Also, it is quite similar to Too Much Too Soon (the same chords, I think?), which also apparently is from C&V, according to the already posted radio interview. Dreamcatcher.... I'm leaning more towards 21stCB era song, but it could also be from around the time they wrote C&V (I don't think they had put an entire album together for C&V, just a bunch of possible songs, maybe a couple for sure on the album, but not more than that). Shoplifter is a possible contender as well. Billie mentioned that Too Much Too Soon was on Cigs and Valentines in a radio interview that was posted on GDA a while ago. Cigs and Valentines (the song) would obviously be a contender, since it's the "title track." What About Today is a way old song (that is, if we're talking about the same song, it's known under a couple of names). What About Today 1, What About Today at Bilile's high school, and I'm too lazy to go find it but there's also a recording from them playing it in '91 (just audio). Was that even a message? I wasn't around at the time, but I didn't think it was one of those messages.... Minnesota Girl is also way old, if I recall it right I think Billie sung it to Adrienne over the phone way back before she even moved to Cali (not sure where I read that, though, so I really don't know whether it was a reliable source or not), but either way, I really don't think those two are from Cigs&Valentines. Edit: I hope I don't come across as some annoying person who thinks they know it better
green day is Posted December 2, 2010 Posted December 2, 2010 What About Today at Bilile's high school That (and the other link which I am too lazy to re-quote for) is the fan-titled "World vs. World" not What About Today. The guy just mislabeled it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_y_qM9RWFOc&playnext=1&list=PL436DBBF393DBD96F&index=22 That is What About Today.
pasalaska Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Stay the Night strikes me as recently written too. Billie seemed to be mumbling a lot of the lyrics in the clip we have, so either he just never got around to writing fleshed out ones (in the case that it is C&V era,) or it's an indication that the song is newer. Stay the Night has fully fleshed-out lyrics, and there was no hesitation on the band's behalf when they were playing it. Ive seen Billie play other 'new songs' at soundchecks, which were him singing and working out guitar at the same time. Stay The Night seems pretty complete. Still, it sounds newer (or not C&V-ish) to me, just because of it's style.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 That (and the other link which I am too lazy to re-quote for) is the fan-titled "World vs. World" not What About Today. I have always known the songs I posted under the name of What About Today (some people call it World vs. World, but I've mostly heard it being called What About Today) and if someone mentioned What About Today, it always referred to the song I posted. I've always known what you just posted as "unnamed song, possibly from Cigs&Valentines". How did you get the name of What About Today for it?
