It seemed like with AI, Green Day had to make a good impression (consciously or unconsciously), so they played all the songs you expected them to play really. With 21CB, they've just loosened up, like they've got nothing to prove. It's just more spontaneous.
Hermione Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 I didn't see them on the AI tour but from everything I've seen and heard the 21st CB tour OWNED it! It was everything the AI tour had, plus SO much more. More songs and more interesting setlists, more audience participation, and all the little on stage traditions turned up a notch. Take King For A Day - great during AI but on a whole other spectacular, flamboyant level during 21st CB. They added in a whole load of new brilliant stuff too, like the longer acoustic encore, having the crowd sing a verse of BOBD, Longview, picking someone to play Jesus Of Suburbia, and so many other things. On top of that there was much more sponteneity - wearing a Cup Noodles outfit for example , and countless other spontaneous things like that. They took what they did with the AI tour and built on it, they brought their showmanship to another level with 21st CB. The best ever! And not just because I was there , it's clear to see whether you were there or not.
Slappy. Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 I didn't go to the AI tour but from what I saw, the 21st Century Breakdown tour owned it completely! Not only were the shows a lot longer but I think the setlists were a lot more varied. And 21CB tour seemed a lot more personal, like the amount of people they had up during Longview, Are we the Waiting, East Jesus nowhere, and then in a couple of shows they got up a whole crowd of people in KFAD and 2000LYA. Plus, I loved the stage at the 21CB tour like the city background thing and then a lot of other awesome backdrops.
Kaddi. Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 I always regretted not having been to a concert during the AI tour, but I changed my mind. To me, the 21st CB tour was like the AI tour, but better. The live performance was as awesome as always, they always had a great setlist and it was just awesome. It's definitely the 21st CB tour for me, because it's given me some of the best nights of my life.

GDJonny Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 American Idiot Tour seemed like a bigger event, because of their popularity at the time. But it has to be 21CB, like DecanoLP said; more songs, older songs, improvisation, more crowd involvement. Just generally more energetic.

I loved 21CB tour, especially since most of the stuff they played was from 39/smooth to AI. (Though I like 21CB, it's the only album of theirs I'm not crazy about.) The tour was more wild and fun.
Isabel Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 AI tour had only 15 songs The American Idiot show I went to had at least 20 songs Definitely the 21st Century Breakdown tour...The rigidity of the American Idiot tour made it almost impossible for fans to do a lot of shows, it would have just gotten boring eventually. Exact same songs every single night with the same phrases word for word.
