Fuzz
I don't know....when I saw the video the first thing that sprang to mind was when Billie said "Bill Graham.......I'm glad the fucker's dead" on stage once. He's got angry and ranted on stage before, and particularly during Dookie times been genuinely nasty and unpleasant towards the crowd. Making angry, nasty comments, and deliberately making those nasty comments extreme and over-the-top to get a reaction is something we've seen from Billie before. I don't feel like this is something new. I don't share his views on technology but I'm not offended by the way he expressed them. He gets hyped up and intense on stage, and spills out what he's feeling. Disagreeing with his views? Thinking he made himself look silly by losing his rag? Yeah I get that. But being offended? Nah. He's passionate and expressive on stage so he's gonna get riled up and go over-the-top sometimes. I don't think it's a big deal. I'm definitely not offended by it, like i said earlier I don't think he needs to apologize. The only people who should be offended by it are Steve Jobs and Barack Obama, and I'm sure neither of them care. My whole point has just been that these were stupid comments. The same way it annoys me when someone tells a gay person "I hope you die of AIDS". It's just...fucked. Not offensive, just stupid.
StevieT
I normally call Billie stupid or an idiot. but I'm defending him this time because it's not fair for people to say it's not okay because it's people they've heard about. Is there something wrong with you look at the overall picture He does a show supporting cancer He decides to say someone should go die of cancer How can u not see that as being wrong
Lauren
How is this a rant?!?! Is he angry at the two guys?!?! No!!! He's just trying to make a statement!! He's using them because they're well known people in the fields he's talking about: technology and politics. You guys could make all the arguments you want. I'd agree with you if he was personally attacking the two. but he's not! StevieT
I'm not personally offended, but I am pretty shocked that he would say this. Maybe I shouldn't be, considering he's had pissed off rants before, but I am. Dookie was a long time ago, and so was Nimrod. A song like Playtpus was written 13 years ago! I'd think he'd have grown or come to terms with this stuff a bit by now. And again I reiterate, his Dad died of cancer. How is this not shocking people as much as it is me! He knows what its like to have a family torn apart by the disease, why would he be so insensitive about it. Thank you !!!!
711_Disciple
People will defend Billie in anything he does. Occasionally, like all of us, he says something that he shouldn't say, punk or no. Like me calling a guy at the Montreal show "a French fucking asshole." It wasn't right, whether in anger or in the moment. Sometimes, we just have to acknowledge that some things are better left unsaid. There is right and wrong, and there are lines, for anyone and everyone. Couldn't have said it better myself. Honestly, my first reaction to this entire thing was "Oh, that's just Billie being an asshole again. No big deal." But thinking about it, this was definitely over the line. I love the guy to death, and I love his band's music, but that doesn't make him infallible. I think at this point we're all aware of Billie's personal vendetta against the way technology is essentially becoming culture. And even if I agreed with him on every level, I wouldn't feel right about endorsing the things he said in Peru. I'd be much more inclined to go to a Green Day concert and hold up a sign that said "Awesome as fuck!" than I would one that said "Kill Steve Jobs!", ya dig? To insult technology as much as possible before urging the crowd to forget technology and enjoy the moment. It's just that thing where you get pissed off and say the nastiest thing.........if he'd been calmer I'm sure he wouldn't have said it but at that moment that's how he felt. In the context he said it I find it hard to be shocked.

And saying someone should die of a disease they had is about as personal of an attack as you can make. I realize the point your making about him making a larger statement, which is fine, he could have (and has) made those statements before much more eloquently. GDM
He can attack Steve Jobs all he wants, and Barack Obama. Telling someone that they should die of cancer after fighting it and doing a telethon just ain't cool. I am really sorry that people have a problem with seeing how uncool that is, lol. I think I'll go and insult some immigrants on the street now. Who should I start with first? LOL. Anyway, I hope the boys have a great vacation in Costa Rica. I think that they need it, lol. TheSaltOfTheEarth
Even the people defending Billie knows what he sad wasn't cool. However, I think we all should know that he really DIDN'T MEAN IT. As you all keep bringing up, his dad died of cancer. So he wouldn't, in a right mind, wish it upon anyone. That brings me to the conclusion that he was just acting in the heat of the moment and trying to get a REACTION out of the basically dead crowd. Billie loves performing and I'm guessing he just got really pissed that nobody was fully THERE, y'know? So even he couldn't enjoy himself as much as he did. Yes, he was a bit of a dickhead. We all are. He's said things similar to this before. Not quite as bad, but still. He said he would strangle Bush if he got half the chance, he's said he was glad someone had died. I know, it's not as bad. But it's pretty close. This is being blown COMPLETELY out of proportion.
Lauren
Yep... someone who just recently went into remission and may still die of it. Someone who was close to it. And as people have pointed out, Billie just did a benefit for a cancer fund. Not. Cool. This reminds me of me saying "The Rev" (not Twitch, the drummer) looked like a girl, and my friend got mad and said "he just died!!! don't say stuff like that!" just because he's dead shouldn't change anything. but like I said over and over again, it wouldn't be cool if he actually meant it. but he didn't. and it's not like he anaylized it before the show "hmm... i wanna say steve jobs should die... let's make it of... any ideas boys?" mike says "drowning" and tre says "getting shot" and then billie's like "no, wait, he should die of cancer!!!" no, it's not like he thought that out. he probably didn't even realize he has cancer already, and even if he did, probably wasn't thinking about it at the time. he probably just thought of the first thing that came to mind when he thought of dying. either way, the "of cancer" part isn't the part that should be justified. how is it any different than saying just "i hope you die" or "i wanna kill you"? what does it matter what he dies of? That's absolutely no excuse for saying stupid things. Going off the example I used above, I wouldn't tell a gay person "I can't wait till you die of AIDS", then try to add context to it, "Oh, i don't ACTUALLY mean I'd like for you to die of AIDS. I just said that because I hate the way the drug companies make it hard for gay people to get the medicine they need". Doesn't matter what my point is after that, the first part was the part that was fucked.

Trotsky
I don't think the people who are saying it's not a big deal are trying to defend Billie, I think they are saying, it's not a big deal. If you want an example of Billie Joe being a complete fucking retard, there's that whole drunk driving incident. This is not him being retarded, this is him saying something with shock value that some people like me (and most of Peru) find amusing. because he fully promote the stopping of cancer and he saying someone who has cancer to hurry up and die of it seriously can u not see that? So? My friend Corey says frequently that he wishes his ex-husband would die of AIDS already for the misery he put him through. That doesn't mean he wants his friends or the people he cares about or random strangers to get AIDS.

Supermodel*Robot
I think the problem here, is that everyone is trying to justify this through "the heat of the moment" etc. I don't care how worked up you are, it's wrong to say shit like that. Yeah, we're all going to do it at some point, but it doesn't make it right. If you were in an argument with your friend and they got really worked up and told you they hoped you'd die of cancer, would you write it off since they were "worked up?" No. You'd still think they were pretty dumb to say it.

And are you saying that he just said everything he said about technology, Steve Jobs, and Barack Obama and he doesn't mean any of it? Then why did he say it in the first place? No, I don't think that he meant to pointedly wish Jobs dead, just like I don't think all French people are assholes. Sometimes, metaphors go deadly wrong, lol. And again, some things are just best left unsaid. I could have easily just called the guy an asshole instead of a French one and Billie could have just as easily made some other pointed comment about Jobs and his technology instead of wishing death on him after recently doing AN ANTI-CANCER BENEFIT, lol. Again, not cool. Just not cool to say. That's just me. And I love Mr. Billie Joe Armstrong to death.
