that article is a fail.

But did this all really go down in just 2 or even 4 years? Check out this video interview from 1993, just before the release of their debut album Dookie.

*facepalm*

Yeah, I know. It's cool to watch that interview (I actually did again yesterday, lol), knowing the whole rock opera thing happened.. 11 years later  The whole interview is worth watching btw, it's great.

It's funny how they were totally kidding when they said that back then, and it just happened they did make a rock opera 11 years later, which features a character called St. Jimmy. Billie was once asked about it, how in this interview they said they'd made a rock opera called "Jimmy", and he didn't even remember it. Still pretty cool, though.

^ And Billie's eating during the entire interview.

Omg billie stop eating.

Wow I thought this was everyones knowledge, I saw this interview some time ago.

Or maybe I'm confusing video clips, they've mentioned rock opera and Broadway several times. :P

Posted

ive seen this! i wonder if they remember saying that. i doubt they ever thought at the time what was going to happen...

That's what makes it great. And Billie's isn't the only one talking, Mike and Tre do that as well, yay. :)

haha wow that's awesome, I've never seen this before...

I wonder if they really seriously had this idea in their head at that time or if it was just a joke and ended up being a coincidence... :D

I actually kind of noticed this before when I was watching it.

And I always laugh at this video because of the way they're acting

One of my personal favorite interviews.

But honestly, saying that American Idiot was in the think tank stages before Dookie was even out is trying to overthink things a bit. Lots of big albums have characters named Jimmy. Like Dr. Jimmy in Quadrophenia, and Jimmy Jazz in London Calling.

On a side note, why are they being interviewed for the fucking DMV?

Posted

Yeah I've watched the video a few times already and that part always made me smile.

I like the part when Mike mentions it's called 'Jimmy' and the interviewer is like "Shut up!" as if something like that would be totally unimaginable. ^^

Thanks for posting. Interesting that they are kidding about the rock opera. And of course, Billie eating again. Does he eat in every old interview???!!

I think that is exactly why they said it's called Jimmy. They're making fun of the them making a rock opera thing, and to top it off they're calling it Jimmy, of all names you could give it.

I totally can't phrase what I want to say. I hope this post doesn't convey an entirely different message than what I mean, haha.
