ellegee Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 ... it was written? As opposed to recorded, or copyrighted, or published? Like, actually written? Very curious. Thx.
*Maria_Laura* Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 I'm confused too What are you asking? Oh nvm I think I get it I think the same too around 1990-92 not sure though
Heather! Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 I think it was written around 1990-1992? I used to be more certain but I can't remember off the top of my head.
Velocity Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 I just know that it was written before Dookie and an early version of it first showed up as a B-side to the Brain Stew/Jaded single.
dawn71 Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 I heard something about him writing it before "Dookie" came out and that it just wasn't a good fit or the right timing for albums that were released before "Nimrod".
Liam Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 I heard something about him writing it before "Dookie" came out and that it just wasn't a good fit or the right timing for albums that were released before "Nimrod". From what I heard he recorded it during the Dookie demo sessions about a girl he was dating that broke up with him because she was moving away so he wrote it as a farewell song, than it got released of the Brain Stew/Jaded single but got rerecorded for Nimrod.

I was just talking about when it was written not when recorded. It was just something I had heard him say something about in a past interview a while back. I had no idea the song was about a girl he dated that moved away. Was it the girl he dated while him and Adie had broken up that time before they got married?
Guest Mia Joe Posted October 18, 2010 Posted October 18, 2010 Yeah I remember one interview he said he wrote it before Dookie, and Mike was like "Really, it's that old?" Haha lol.

Was it the girl he dated while him and Adie had broken up that time before they got married? Yea I'm pretty sure it was. According to Billie Joe Armstrong in an interview in Guitar Legends magazine, May 2005: "At the time I wrote Good Riddance, I was breaking up with a girl that was moving to Ecuador, and I was trying to be as understanding about it as I could. I wrote the song as kind of a bon voyage. I was trying not to be bitter, but I think it came out a little bit bitter anyway... I thought that calling the song "Time of Your Life" was just a little too level-headed for me, so I had to come up with something different"
