foxboro1234 Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 After going to the amazing Denver show in August, I began to ask myself what Green Day was turning into. I mean it felt like half of the venue was children 12 and under! I say that Green Day get out of this children phase and start getting more for teens and adults again. I'm not saying their music needs to change, but how about they stop encouraging kids by pulling them on stage and crap or they could even just make the shows 16 and older for crying out loud. What do you all think? edit: http://blogs.denverpost.com/reverb/2010/08/30/live-review-green-day-comfort-dental-amphitheatre/ is what convinced me to write this. "Family-friendly pop rock" might be good for the band it is just that I hate it being called that and it is the kids that influence those kind of statements. edit: You all have made good points that it is good that Green Day is appropriate for all ages and I guess I respect that too, but I feel as if it is beginning to lean more towards the smaller side of the audience in terms of size. I have been to a ton of concerts with kids and it is fine...its just that there was a little kid sitting right next to me, right in front of me and right behind me (all about 6 years old). Maybe it was just my seating, but I think there were lots and lots of kids there.
Fuzz Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Hah, they are not in a children phase. Just because kids go to the show doesn't mean Green Day aim their material at them. I also do not believe for a second that the majority of their audience (at shows) are for people 12 an under.
Moffie Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 What's wrong with kids liking Green Day? Since the '90's, kids have liked Green Day. It's not the guys' fault that happens. They're not aiming towards pre-pubescents; just people who want to listen and fans, young and old.
Reberebel96 Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Yeah i understand you but i think Green Day is all-ages
PeaceMucker Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I couldn't agree less. Green Day is one of the few rock acts that is enjoyed by many generations. The kids and people that pull up on stage are already fans and would come to shows regardless of content, unless it was noted to be an 18+ show. The boys have grown up themselves, they are all family men now. Billie Joe has even said that he is a very conservative parent. I do agree that it is odd to look around and see so many young people, but their shows are definitely not geared towards that audience. Making a show 16 and older would go against the Green Day way. When I got into Green Day I was 8 years old, I don't want a bunch of kids to not have this band change their life due to a freaking age restriction.
Trotsky Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 That is quite heavy elitism you have going on there. Everyone has a first show they go to, usually it's a more mainstream band like Green Day and that opens them up to more diverse bands, and with experience one learns how to act at shows and what to do and all that. Usually the 21 and over crowd who gets ridiculously drunk and throws their beers everywhere are way more annoying than 12 year olds anyway. It's not like they are running into moshpits and everyone has to stop for child crossings (are there even moshpits at GD shows anyway?) I saw My Chemical Romance when I was 13 and it was what made me realize what being at a show was like and it got me into live music and expanded my social life. I don't even like MCR all that much anymore but nonetheless everyone starts somewhere. You sound very jaded and you shouldn't be so insecure about the music you listen to, because I highly doubt 12 year olds at shows are all that annoying. So it seems to me you just feel embarrassed about liking a band that younger kids listen to as well which is rather pathetic.
Velocity Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I'm pretty sure they're not aiming at the pre-pubescent crowd considering all the f-bombs Billie drops during the shows.
Trotsky Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 By the way, the only age restrictions on shows generally have to do with alcohol, i.e., shows played at bars. So you want Green Day to only play bars and only for the 21+ crowd? There is no such thing as making a show "16 and older". Venues don't do it (cause it's bad business, retarded, and pointless), and bands can't tell venues who to let in and not let in their shows, and I can't imagine any band that would.
Moffie Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I'm pretty sure they're not aiming at the pre-pubescent crowd considering all the f-bombs Billie drops during the shows. And the mooning. Let the children rock out as long as they don't piss me off! I've been a fan for most of my life and I wouldn't want to restrict or not allow someone to partake in the joy that I have had for so long because they're kids. That's not right. They couldn't choose to be born earlier.
MCC Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I agree with Andres. I don't believe the band is targeting the 12 year old crowd with their music in any way. What I believe is happening is older fans are taking their kids/nieces/nephews to shows and thus, there is a new generation of fans. I think it is awesome to see a family together rocking out at a show.
Joy of suburbia. Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 And the mooning. Let the children rock out as long as they don't piss me off! I've been a fan for most of my life and I wouldn't want to restrict or not allow someone to partake in the joy that I have had for so long because they're kids. That's not right. They couldn't choose to be born earlier. And don't forget the illusion of masturbating onstage. But anyway...the kids should like what they wanna like, It's not their fault that they're younger. I mean, they may not understand the context of some of the songs but, let them enjoy it. That's like somebody saying to me I can't like the Grateful Dead cause I'm 20. Just because I'm 20 still doesn't mean I shouldn't like the Grateful Dead or not listen to them either.
Moffie Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Honestly, in this day and age, we should applaud the kids that choose Green Day over stuff like Justin Bieber and other stuff that is in mainstream today.
gdpony Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 They couldn't choose to be born earlier. exactly, I actually like the fact that everyone can relate to their music, and this forum is a big example of it. People from 12 years to 50 join everyday, and I there's nothing wrong with it. It just proves how amazing their music is.

I just got my nephew into Green Day and he wanted to be saved and wants to go to a concert so bad. Hell, he even wants to join GDC. But...he's 8 and can't type that good and whathave you.
clairemarie Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I'm pretty sure they're not aiming at the pre-pubescent crowd considering all the f-bombs Billie drops during the shows. Yeah, I'm sure they're not aiming for that audience. But hey, if they enjoy the music whether the understand the context of it or not, let them go to a show. It's an awesome experience as a young kid to be open up to the live music world and what better way to start that off than with a Green Day show?
mmmcrazypills Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 If a band neglects part of it's fan segment that just makes them douches. If you dislike being around the fans so much don't go to the shows. I love all time low but their fans are generally all hovering around mental retardation, I just skip their shows.
VanVan Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 If a band neglects part of it's fan segment that just makes them douches. I love all time low but their fans are generally all hovering around mental retardation, I just skip their shows. i couldnt agree with this more i think its wrong to deny kids the right to go see the bands they wanna see. and i definitely agree with everything everyone has said on here about it opening up your world to concerts. green day was the 2nd band i ever saw live when i was 14 yrs old and ive been to god knows how many since. they can not help when they were born. hell we should congratulate them for listening and going to see green day rather than the jonas brothers
Bohemian+Scandal Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Honestly, in this day and age, we should applaud the kids that choose Green Day over stuff like Justin Bieber and other stuff that is in mainstream today. Truth. It's nice to see kids enjoying Green Day. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy or something.
Zia Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I think it's amazing if kids would want to hear Green Day more than Justin Bieber or lady Gaga. Music is nowadays so terrible, like that stuff without any instruments and only computer and where artists don't even sing on their own shows and just rely on playback.. I would never dislike kids on Green day consert if they listen good real music! In Helsinki, Billie took really young kid on stage. She was 4 years old and really hardcore fan(I know person that knows her)! She had decided that she wanted hug Green Day and her parents told her that it's quite impossimble. But she made it and she saved Billie and she even get Trés drumsticks (those drumsticks are her greatest treasure)! That was so damn sweet
LouLou Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Thats what I love about Green Day: All Ages
porksoda Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 They're not targeting kids, but I think that a lot of young teens end up going to the shows because everyone in the band is 'soooo hawt', and probably because kids have a tendency to listen to popular radio more than adults. It's kind of annoying some times, but I don't really care. Green Day's great, and I'm glad so many people can enjoy them. That being said, the last 2 shows I went to, I was in the pit and I was surrounded by adults. Kind of freaked me out
ANJI Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I really dont mind if kids are at Green Day shows...at least they listen to proper music. I'm glad younger generations enjoy their music instead of, as mentioned above, liking Justin Bieber and its nice to see them getting pulled up on stage and enjoying themselves...so i'd let them have their fun instead of having age restrictions....
Guest Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I saw Guns N' Roses when I was 11, not exactly a "kid friendly" band by any means. Thankfully, my parents knew from a young age what music meant to me and didn't interfere, but rather encouraged me. My dad bought me the tix and my mom took me. I can tell you I was definitely the youngest person there and I highly doubt anyone cared that they were sharing that night with a 6th grader.
mmmcrazypills Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I highly doubt anyone cared that they were sharing that night with a 6th grader. This is a pretty great summary of the question at hand. You should be at shows because you want to be there, not just to be seen sitting with the cool kids.
The Platypus! Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 I don't think they should make it 16 and over mainly because I'm only 13, and because it wouldn't be fair on there fans.
