toomuchtoosoon Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I was watching a video of Green Day playing "Jackass" on Canadian TV from back in 2000 a few minutes ago. It was only Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre playing. Obviously, that means there was no sax solo, but the song sounded damn good even without it. They were really playing together as a band; a very slick groove, a great sound. I started thinking to myself: Hey, these guys would probably sound even better just the three of them now! They're at the top of their game with their musicianship! I fully understand the need for the extra musicians on stage. It would be impossible to play 21st Century Breakdown songs, and most, if not all, songs from American Idiot without the additional support. I think it's awesome how Green Day has expanded their sound, and I love their new stuff as much as their old stuff! But I was also thinking it would be fun to have a "throw back" tour of sorts. Just Billie Joe, Mike, and Tre rocking out on stage. It would be very, very different than the days of old, of course, but it some ways it would be even better. They could play pretty much every song from all their CDs up to Warning (with some exceptions such as King for a Day). They could probably pull off songs like "Letterbomb" and "Whatsername" if they really felt the need to. I picture them playing the old hits, of course; Longview, Brainstew, ect. ect. But I envision this being a chance to dig out some more deep cuts such as The Grouch, Castaway, and Do Da Da. Also, getting to hear full versions of songs like Armatage Shanks, instead of just the first verse, would be excellent. So I don't know guys... what do you think? Would this be something you all would be down with? Personally, I think it'd be amazingly fun if anything like this ever happened. It wouldn't be as flashy of a tour... obviously Billie Joe couldn't prance around stage; at least I would hope not! He'd have to be playing his guitar! But it would be a huge singalong for everyone - especially diehard Green Day fans - and I think it would be a very good experience for anyone who attended. And I suspect Green Day might really enjoy it too.
JohannaRaeRamone. Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 -shrug- I don't think it'd be that different, honestly. It's a cool idea but we're never going to have the Green Day of the early 90s back, as much as we could romantasize the idea. They've just grown up and beyond that. In a roots sense it'd be cool to see them do a smaller scale stripped down thing like that, but it'd just be a like a parady of themselves, like a 50 year old rock star trying to fit into his old leather outfits. GD are better than that.

GD are better than that. Oh yes, of course it would be different. I'm not saying Billie Joe should spastically strum his guitar and roll his eyes throughout the whole show. I'm just saying it'd be fun to just have the three guys play some shows. We'll never get Green Day from the 90s back, of course, and that's not really the point. The point would be just to hear some of their older material and have the pleasure of just seeing what the three guys sound like playing together, just themselves. Nothing more.
Vespertine Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I would love it I mean, as you've said, it would be kind of impossible to play some songs, but I guess it would be a nice experience.
PunkRocks and Coke Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I thikn it would be cool to see, it would be like being back in time watching green day live...if that made sence, but yeah it would be awesome i think so anyway.
Punk-tastic32 Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 It would be kinda cool. Of course they wouldn't be able to play some songs, and Billie might have to focus more on playing that humping the stage; but it would be fun just to see the three guys by themselves. Three best friends just playing music and having a good time.
Kitteh Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I would love it. It sure would be different. It's about as likely as a FBHT tour *cries*
FiaKels Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 If this happens, it would have to be in much smaller venues. Which would be awesome. It's probably never going to happen, since everybody involved in that touring machine is content with the current situation, but hey. A person can always fantasize. A lot.
Moffie Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I feel like it would be almost like a step back for them. The reason the guys brought on the Jasons and recently Jeff was to make a fuller sound and allow Billie to be more of a front-man. It would work if they were back to playing smaller venues and Billie stopped running around but I feel like the touring musicians make the stadiums explode. Never hurts to dream of just Billie, Mike and Tre being the only ones playing and in smaller venues.
keefe Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 Wouldn't you miss Billie running around singing and doing his signature 'HEY-OH's? It's a good idea, but i really like the setup they have now, the big band sounds awesome! Plus hasn't Jason White been with the band for 15-some years? It would have to be a really old tour then!
Hermione Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 ^ Agreed. The way they have things set up now allows Billie, Mike and Tre to deliver a better show with much more crowd interaction etc. Billie's freed up to do whatever he wants on stage - they can still do everything they did before, but now they have the option to do so much more on top of it. I prefer it this way. I don't feel like it interferes with the chemistry between Billie, Mike and Tre either. That energy and bond between them that's so wonderful to watch on stage is still there in full effect. The extra musicians don't get in the way of that, they just serve to support it.
son Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 >original members >tre cool they added the touring members because their music has more now then it did before, so there would be a big reductions of songs played. im pretty sure since billie is older now, its why half of the time he only sings, besides that he brings alot of visual energy on stage. but if none of that wasnt a problem, it would be awesome in a small venue! older songs
Leisha-LUNA Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I would desperately miss the three Js. I love them all so much.
fadi_7 Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 i think it would be hard for them i hope they don't do this thing
Hermione Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I would desperately miss the three Js. I love them all so much. Me too! They're great. Jason White thrusting his hips in our direction was one of the highlights of my first Green Day show . With them there, no matter where Billie moves on the stage and no matter where you are in the audience, there's always someone to watch. And because there's less attention on them you're much more likely to be able to make eye contact/interact with them. Not to mention they make the music sound fuller and better. Just another level of awesomeness added to a Green Day show.
Zero. Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 It would be cool, but Billie would spend a lot of time playing the guitar other than running around probably lol
RebelofSuburbia Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I would love it if they did that. After all, they're a 3-piece band and I would like a live experience where it actually shows that they are.
KatherineKerplunk Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I love it! Although, I love the Jasons and Jeff. I think they should play thieir older song were there is just the 3 of them like in AI era but now Jason W. comes in and I don't want that.
in_your_face Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 well, that'd be awesome but we all will be missing Jason Freese and Jason White. they've been with the band since 2004 and have contributed so much. they've made the songs sound better, and thus making it a successful show worth the money.=)
Nele Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 well, that'd be awesome but we all will be missing Jason Freese and Jason White. they've been with the band since 2004 and have contributed so much. they've made the songs sound better, and thus making it a successful show worth the money.=) Jason White joined them in 1999.
Schlappy Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 it would sound fine obviously, but it would be so much less dynamic. plus, so many of their songs CANT be played without the tour musicians. parts would be missing, it wouldnt be solid, it would just be a mess. Green Day should always strive to be the best they can be and if they need other amazing musicians to do that then hell yeah
The Platypus! Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 It wouldn't be much different from how they are now but there just wouldn't be solos in King For a Day etc,
