unabrasiveadhesive Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Many of my friends say green day isn't punk and they're sell outs. But they only heard of 21 guns. As a person who listens to old and new green day songs, I think that they did not really sell outs as they didn't compromise their integrity so they make alot of money. As for their music I think that the early stuff( pre warning) are definatly pop punk to say the least. Warning is mostl alternative rock with punk elements , American idiot was pop punk and 21 at century breakdown was half pop punk half alt rock. But what I'm interested in is your opinion because I am a noob to music as a whole. Btw pop punk is just punk rock with more melody in the vocals right?
Vespertine Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 There are already threads like this... but really, they're the only ones who can say what/who they are.
kristinsinferno Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 fuck yeah they are punk! >=D ask green day.... Billie Says, "Punk is always something that’s going to be with us and to try and explain that would be stupid at this point." Mike Says, "We write music for ourselves and if other people like it, that's great." And Tre` Says, "I have a homosexual crush on most adolescents." (i threw in the last one just for fun. sorry)
Eeefaa. Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I dont know, but whatever music it is, I really like it!
SixtiesJunkiie Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I think their attitude can be classified as that of 'punk', but musically (these days) their sound is pop-punk. it's still awesome though, whatever genre of music they play. personally have a bias towards their older albums, but they have mad talent and even with their music continually evolving, they still put out great music.
Fuzz Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I can't find a recent thread, so I'll just leave this open. This is a conversation that comes up here, and most people just get annoyed at the questions - but I think we can leave this open for new members to participate and share their opinions in. My opinion, yes they are. I will elaborate at some other time.

Bohemian+Scandal Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 They once were, but no longer are. Just my opinion. I'm a big fan of Green Day, but going by the basic definition of punk lifestyle and the punk music genre, current Green Day aren't really punk. To each their own opinion of course. They have punk roots and are still very in touch with them, though which is good, but they've moved on. Does it really matter though? They still kick ass. That is all.
Lauren Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Lol grammar fail by me but it's the interwebs and I'm on an iPod i don't understand how an ipod suddenly changes the word "is" to "are" Btw pop punk is just punk rock with more melody in the vocals right? technically, pop = short for popular.
ifmemoryserves Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 I know that Green Day IS punk. not sure about are punk. That's all I have to say on the matter.
st.idiot Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 green day are, have been and forever will be punk. they didn't sell out because then that means that the sex pistols the clash and ramones are sell outs and i'm pretty sure theyre not at all. green day have just matured their sound and have become better song writers and are looking for something bigger and better than just writing the same songs over and over again. i mean theyre not just punk or not just rock-theyre pop punk rock alternative. this is my point of view: the clash, the ramones and the who had a baby-that baby is green day.

Bohemian+Scandal Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 technically, pop = short for popular. True, but it's become a genre thanks to Green Day (and The Offspring). Green Day was a certain style of punk and became popular (so did The Offspring). Their style of punk was then imitated all over the place making pop punk an actual distinguishable sound. Them snotty whiny vocals.

They are...what they are. Their roots are in punk rock but they have sooooo far transcended the genre and, I think, don't have any limits now. Now they can play whatever the hell they want, whenever the hell they want, and wherever the hell they want. Awright, maybe not Gregorian monk chants, but the sky's the limit for them with every other musical style they've ever attempted, or daresay will attempt in the future. Can we leave it be at that?
unabrasiveadhesive Posted August 20, 2010 Author Posted August 20, 2010 i don't understand how an ipod suddenly changes the word "is" to "are" technically, pop = short for popular. No it's a touch keyboard so I look at the keyboard when I type but normally I type on a physical keyboard so I see what I type. And pop punk is a mix between punk and pop so thats how I got the melody from

Bohemian+Scandal Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 GREEN DAY IS, NOT ARE. GET IT RIGHT OMG. I think it depends on where you're from. This has most definitely been been debated in the world of grammar.
