The Platypus! Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I've heard so many good/bad things about standing at a Green Day Show, share your good and bad things about standing at a Green Day show. (sorry if this is not thread worthy or there's already a thread about this but i checked and couldn't find one)
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Well, I suppose that thread 'pit or lawn' says a whole bunch of things about standing.
Holly Ann Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Well, it was a lot rougher than I expected. When the first two bands came on, we was kinda like floating at the front. Then GD came on, everyone surged forward and it hurt. Some of the people were being total dicks, like grabbing onto us and stuff, but then we moved back into the main moshpit, and it was actually better. Plus, the people were really 'professional' and if someone lost a shoe or something, they'd hold it up in the air till someone claimed it. and if someone fell over, pretty much everyone would stop and help them up. It was really hot and sticky though and we were struggling to breath at times. I didn't get hurt or anything, but I personally wouldn't do it again, only if I'd been camping and got to the front.

Well my dad said that we were getting standing tickets for the next Green Day concert but now i'm not too sure if people are complete dicks :/
Miss Hedgie Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I've done both. My first GD concert I was standing. Its a great atmosphere in the pit and to be able to mosh and jump around to your fave songs. However I'm 5 foot 2 and I couldn't really see the band But seating is the same. You get a great atmosphere, you feel included and I like it better when I can see the show.
Holly Ann Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Well my dad said that we were getting standing tickets for the next Green Day concert but now i'm not too sure if people are complete dicks :/ Not all of the people were dicks. I came across about three. And that's out of thousands of people. The rest of them were nice people. Just having a good time.
Radioactive1 Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Good things - You get to be close to the band. I've had barrier at Birmingham, Manchester and Wembley. Bad things - I always feel faint in it, people always push, you get crushed when the band comes on as everyone surges forward, you get elbows and knees pressed against you. Buuut the good thing has over ridden the bad things everytime.

Just having a good time. ohh that's alright then but i still don't like the thought that it would be hard to breathe sometimes and standing there for 4 or 5 hours in boiling heat. And how tall roughly do you have to be to be able to see properly ?
Holly Ann Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 ohh that's alright then but i still don't like the thought that it would be hard to breathe sometimes and standing there for 4 or 5 hours in boiling heat. And how tall roughly do you have to be to be able to see properly ? When we moved back we could breath fine, there was much more space. Hm, well; how tall are you? I'm 5'5 and I could see fine, just make sure there's no 6ft tall dude in front of you for about an hour (in my case, there was. ) I was creating scenes of cutting his head off whilst I was standing there.
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 you get crushed when the band comes on as everyone surges forward, Oh this was so bad at Pinkpop at the Class of 13 part. It was crushing before, but when that started it became impossibly worse. Couldn't breathe for a couple of seconds It wasn't scary though, mainly just "OOMPH". Anyway, I definitely prefer standing. Yes, you get crushed a little and you might get a bunch of bruises, depending on the crowd (I personally haven't gotten any bruises when I was standing), and if you don't eat or drink enough you might feel a little faint, but that's all minimal compared to how awesome it is to stand. The atmosphere is, in my opinion, better than when you're in the seats, because you're all so pushed together, all passionate about the band and all doing the same, jumping at the same time, singing the same, just being in the moment. And you can see the band from up close.

Well i'm only 13 at the moment so i'll grow a bit hopefully before the next come back to England but i'm 5'5 or 5'6 i don't actually know . that made me laugh
iLozza! Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I've stood and I've sat (though you never really get to sit down haha) but I actually prefer standing. Despite being squashed (I don't even recall being that squashed) it was fine, we got loads of water (make sure you drink during the day though, I didn't and my mouth was so dry and my throat hurt >.<) and I really enjoyed y'know, jumping around with everyone else.
Juliette Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Even if you feel like you're dying it's worth it in the end

If you decide against standing, you could always sit. Like I did at my first GD concert, and stand up. BJ actually looked at me because I was pretty much moshing in the seats.
heartscollide Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I've only been at the barrier at a Green Day show or seating so my info isn't very helpful. But, it was really really really painful at the barrier, I was getting pushed in three directions and I'm small so it was really uncomfortable at times. So fucking worth it though!
iLozza! Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Yeah, you'll be able to see fine. If you decide against standing, you could always sit. Like I did at my first GD concert, and stand up. BJ actually looked at me because I was pretty much moshing in the seats. I can totally imagine you doing that I was so far at the back at my first concert, seriously. BJ looks like, idk, one of those little characters you get in kid's playsets that are like 1cm big xD Also when you're standing you get the chance of catching things, i.e picks, drumsticks etc.

But then we got moved to the front row. ;DFKL;GJKFL;GJKDFH

Yeaah I've got seating to my last two Green Day concerts (The O2 second night and Wembley) because he thought i was too short to stand but next time he said i could Also when you're standing you get the chance of catching things, i.e picks, drumsticks etc. That's why I want to stand because I read Tasha's experience of standing and how she caught Mike's Cats ears I want to catch something like that

BJ actually looked at me because I was pretty much moshing in the seats. Oh lol I did that as well. Completely went crazy xD Not my first gig, but anyway. I don't know if they actually looked at me, but it's definitely possible. Yay for one of the best seats in the house That's one of the things I do like about sitting being in the seats section. You can do whatever you want without hitting anyone, and it's not like you're ever going to see the people around you again so you're completely free to do whatever. Also when you're standing you get the chance of catching things, i.e picks, drumsticks etc. Or get on stage. =D Or the other way round, that they wear stuff you bring to shows.
Punk-tastic32 Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Standing is awesome! You're packed in with thousands of other people who are there for the exact reason as you. You feel like one big family. And if you're tired you can lean on people and they won't even notice XD At the end, you're dead tired ( I pretty much passed out in the cab on the way home) But it's defiantly the way to go If you're in the pit, you have a chance of singing Longview :eyebrow:
Hermione Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Fucking AMAZING! I'm quite small, but at Wembley I was right in the pit and getting moved/shoved around quite a lot, and I loved it. I never got hurt and there was such a good atmosphere, everytime I got moved over ten feet suddenly it just made me laugh. At the same time as this going on I still always had a brilliant view of the band. Being that close, and being right of the middle of things jumping and dancing is just the best thing in the world. And of course if it got too much you could always move back. Standing isn't always rough though. At the O2 I was on the barrier, but quite far over past Mike's side. In that position it was in the interest of the people behind me to lean/look sideways, not forward, so no one was pushing me or anything, I was in the exact same place for the whole show. So if you get on the barrier further out to the side it's possible to have a much less boisterous show and enjoy a really great view of the band. It was great for my first GD show, just to observe the band. Now I'd pick being in the middle of the craziness over the slightly better view any day though!
Holly Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I would never dream of buying seating tickets because I think the whole pushing/shoving/pain is all part of the experience I absolutely love standing. My first Green Day show last year I was one person off the barrier and for the first few songs it was amazing because when Billie kept leaning out and stuff I was just inches away from my hero. Then it all went a bit mental and people shoved me back and I spent the rest of the show thinking I was going to die because I couldn't breathe or see I was actually pretty scared at some points but I refused to let myself get pulled out for those moments when I saw between peoples heads and realised how close I was to the band. The whole atmosphere is amazing, everybody around you screaming out the lyrics that mean so much to you. I dunno, I sound crazy, but even though it was pretty terrifying at some points of that gig it was also absolutely amazing. The other two Green Day shows I was at the barrier and it was incredible because I could breathe and see! Haha. Manchester wasn't pushy enough for me, it felt a bit weird. I wasn't in the very middle, I was off the Mike's side and although it was squishy and there was the occasional push the same atmosphere wasn't there as when you're in the thick of it. I actually wanted to be in the middle of the mental crowd then but I was quite thankful that it was like that because I took my younger brother and it was his first gig, I don't think he would've survived the craziness. Wembley was perfect. I was at the barrier on the runway, there was an amazing atmosphere and, gosh, just such an unbelievable experience. I've just waffled so much, haha, but I think that the bad points are outweighed massively by the good. I absolutely adore being in the pit, everyone is so nice with a few exceptions, which is to be expected, but everyone around you always gangs up on the person being a twat and when they've been near me the idiot has always been pulled out by the security as soon as we told them. I love it so so so much
Katarina. Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 I love it. When you're close to or at the barrier (like I was both times I've seen GD live) you're so close to the stage, you can see pretty much everything. The whole atmosphere is amazing as well with screaming people all around you singing along to the lyrics. There are times when the crowd is more rough and pushy, which can be annoying some times. With songs like St. Jimmy, 21CB (the class of '13 part) Jaded etc. the crowd is like that, but it's all part of the experience indeed. Like I said, I love it Can't wait to see them live again!
iLozza! Posted August 17, 2010 Posted August 17, 2010 Haha That was the same with us, we had crap seats. But then we got moved to the front row. ;DFKL;GJKFL;GJKDFH Oh my god, how come?!
The Platypus! Posted August 17, 2010 Author Posted August 17, 2010 I can see what everyone means by the 'Class Of 13' bit in 21CB ^^on that video on the right hand side you see everybody trying to push forward and then going backwards then forwards again
