J'net Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 In honor of the opening of American Idiot tomorrow night and the incredible Rebecca Jones, who performs this song with no holds barred, Letterbomb is our Song of the Week. Please use this thread to discuss your thoughts and feelings about the song. The American Idiot album was first released in September, 2004 by Reprise Records. It was Green Day's first album to hit #1 in the charts and has gone platinum 3 times. It now forms the basis for the musical theater production of the same name and is opening at the St. James (fondly called the St. Jimmy) theater on Broadway tomorrow night. I've always liked this song, but I've never seen anything like the performance of Rebecca Jones singing it to Johnny in the musical. Her intensity, electricity, and complete commitment to every instant of the performance is mesmerizing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqU4CS1a1Nk Letterbomb Lyrics Nobody likes you. Everyone left you. They're all out without you Having fun. Where have all the bastards gone? The underbelly stacks up ten high. The dummy failed the crash test. Collecting unemployment checks Like a flunkie along for the ride. Where have all the riots gone As your city's model gets pulverized? What's in love is now in debt On your birth certificate. So strike the fucking match to light this fuse! The town bishop's an extortionist And he don't even know that you exist. Standing still when it's do or die - You better run for your fucking life. It's not over 'till you're underground. It's not over before it's too late. This city's burnin' - It's not my burden. It's not over before it's too late There's nothing left to analyze. Where will all the martyrs go when the virus cures itself? And where will we all go when it's too late? And don't look back You're not the Jesus of Suburbia! The St. Jimmy is a figment of Your father's rage and your mother's love - Made me the idiot America! It's not over 'till you're underground. It's not over before it's too late. This city's burnin' - It's not my burden. It's not over before it's too late She said I can't take this place - I'm leaving it behind. Well she said I can't take this town - I'm leaving you tonight. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- You can nominate songs for discussion as Song of the Week in the Song Discussions thread, which contains links to each previous Song of the Week from 9/14/2009 forward in its original post.

I like this part the best: "She said I can't take this place - I'm leaving it behind. Well she said I can't take this town - I'm leaving you tonight." I must listen to it right now. <3

Comedy & Tragedy Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 YEEEEAH! I love this song so much! My favourite off American Idiot (tied with Holiday) The fast, angst-filled riff and the powerful lyrics, really shows the frustration coming from this song. I really love the final few seconds, the guitar sounds so perfect. I love everything about it

Kayfabe Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 Where will all the martyrs go when the virus cures itself? And where will we all go when it's too late? NUFF. SAID. and Billie's scream in this song is epic... Yah he screams along with the guitar
Princess Consuela Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 The lyrics are just perfect. I like this part the best: "She said I can't take this place - I'm leaving it behind. Well she said I can't take this town - I'm leaving you tonight." I must listen to it right now. <3 I love this part the most too. It's such a powerful song. I like how it relates to other AI songs. I know, I know, 'rock opera'. But I think it has more relations than other songs. Especially this verse: You're not the Jesus of Suburbia! The St. Jimmy is a figment of Your father's rage and your mother's love - Made me the idiot America! As if it was a little summary of the album. I don't know. Also, I like how it's followed by the most melancholic (I hope it's the right word) song on the album. I like that contrast.
Alan86 Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 Great song, I was convinced this weeks song of the week would be Foxboro hot tubs song "Broadway"
Daughter.of.Rage.and.Love Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 AWESOME song. no other words needed, it's awesome, period. will leave the "I love *line* because of *reason*" to other people, big chance I agree anyway and within a day probably the whole song is quoted. =D
Eeefaa. Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 i love the way Billie says: "Don't. Look. Back." this song in general has so much emotion and energy in it.
04rebhop Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 The best song on American Idiot. I just love the part of the song when it goes "You're not the Jesus of Suburbia! The St. Jimmy is a figment of Your father's rage and your mother's love - Made me the idiot America!" It's just so powerful.
elisa Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 probably the best song from American Idiot. It kicks ass and I agree, I loved the Cast Version. Rebecca did a brilliant job!
