J'net
I love so many things about this song. The lyrics are bruisey and brutal, so vivid that the emotional violence they come from feels like it's still hanging in the air, reverberating, the way the aftershocks of an all-out, dirty fight keep on coming. Both sides inflicted the maximum damage and neither came out covered in glory - naw, this has the forlorn feeling of 'what have we done to each other, just to score a point?'. It ends up still not backing down, doing some negotiation, like Church On Sunday - but this song is drenched in love, and belief in that love. It has a Beatles sound to it - I hear 'P.S. I Love You', and 'Nowhere Man', especially in the triple of the last line. I love where Billie Joe drops down to accapella, bringing focus to that killer opening line again and pointing up the sweetness of the melody - it's one of those simple, dramatic pieces of timing that he's so good at. I know!!!!! The "drenched in love" is what is so wonderful about this song. If the words and feel were only able to be taken at face value, it wouldn't have half the impact it has! But the tune and tone of voice (and some of the words and combinations of words) make it obvious that the love is what the song's all about. And the Beatles sound...there's a little harmony I do with that final "and I guarantee we'll have the road" that is SO Beatles it kills me every time. Angeline!!! J'net
never heard the weezer version before ! i like it I have to admit, there's something about it I don't like at all. It's too "soft" or something. And I like some of Weezer's songs - but this cover leaves me cold. Edit: Though it's true ... I've never listened to it all the way through - it just can't capture my attention long enough. It bores me.

Bastard of 1967
I love so many things about this song. I love where Billie Joe drops down to accapella, bringing focus to that killer opening line again and pointing up the sweetness of the melody - it's one of those simple, dramatic pieces of timing that he's so good at. Love reading your interp. as always, Angeline...and once again your words inspire my own. The whole song is another textbook example of how effective Billie is at using metaphoric wordplay to convey his message. Pair after pair of ironic word-twists add layer upon layer of brutally unambigous meaning: "sentimental argument", "bitter love", "fucked without a kiss", "yelling at brick walls", punching a stone window, and it just goes on and on, perhaps just like the fight itself. The belief in continued love you noted in your post, the commitment despite the terrible fight -- the "yeah what we just did to each other really sucks, but if you're sticking with me then I'm sticking with you" -- "Promise me no dead end streets/And I'll guarantee we have the road" -- is what hooks me at the end of each set of verses. Personally, I feel that if you have to try *that* hard to stay in the pocket with someone then it's an indication that maybe you shouldn't be in that relationship, but then again I also know many long-lasting, committed couples who *need* that kind of conflict to keep their relationship healthy and vibrant. It's worth taking a good, hard listen to Tre's percussion in Worry Rock. He's got at least two -- well, I can hear two distinct ones anyway -- different rhythms going on simultaneously (I SWEAR one of these days I will prove that the guy really does have a third arm!) -- a basic 2/4 time 1-2-1-2-1-2 pattern runs through the entire song, with a delayed-backbeat "1-2-1-and-2" rhythm overlaid on top of it, broken up by his now-trademark, fiery machine-gun rolls between phrases. Each downbeat hits with the force that your partner's fist (verbal or physical, doesn't matter) hits you with during the fight....and he only backs off the fury during the moments in the song when our pair of lovers/adversaries step outside of themselves and become aware of what they're doing to each other ("A knock-down dragged out fight/fat lips and open wounds..."). Mike's bass chords that provide the pervasive background hum have a feel to them that recall his work on "Stuart & The Ave." from Insomniac, with a twist: his strumming pattern is 2/4 time, in lock-step with the first of Tre's drum rhythms, rather than the seemingly continous tone he lays down in "Stuart". All of this comes together in a fabulous arrangement that emphasizes and punctuates Billie's message. I have to admit, there's something about it I don't like at all. It's too "soft" or something. And I like some of Weezer's songs - but this cover leaves me cold. Ditto. This song was never meant to be done acoustic. All the passion in it drains away, and it doesn't help any that Weezer changed the lyric "fucked without a kiss" to "hugged without a kiss". Instead of Ali vs. Frazier in the ring we get namby vs. pamby instead. No me gusta.
Bastard of 1967
One other thought just occurred to me....Worry Rock forms a pair of bookends with 21 Guns on the "other end". Take a listen to the two back-to-back, Worry Rock first and then 21 Guns next. You'll see what I mean.

Comedy & Tragedy
I love this song! My fave off Nimrod, by far! I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's just something to this song that makes me love it so much! Where do we go from here and what did you do with the directions? Promise me no dead end streets, and I'll guarantee we'll have the road. I agree with J'net's opening post. It shows the reality of life and how love isn't all smooth sailing as it appears to be. Brilliant song.
