Did Green Day Revive Punk?

Hey guys

I have recently been having arguments with my friends as to whether Green Day revived punk or are a true punk band like the Sex Pistols and I would like your opinion.

It is a well known fact that punk is aparently "dead" but I dont think this is true. If you look at some of Green Days older albums such as Nimrod, there is definatly that 70s punk element and feel there. Even with albums like American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, they may not sound like classic punk like the Sex Pistols, but I dont think that you can describe them as anything other than punk rock.

So what do you guys think???

I hope I will be starting a debate here :lol:

If Green Day thinks they're punk, that's fine by me. They've always done what they want, I guess.

btw, one question mark is enough

tbh, I've never considered green day as a PUNK band, i mean... they started in that punk scene & stuff, but their music wasnt that punk though. idk... maybe I have a wrong concept about what its "punk" or, whatever... I think thats not important though, they do MUSIC, who cares if its punk, rock, pop or whatever? I think theres no need to label it ... just my opinion. :D

I've always considered Green Day a punk rock band and it bothers me a lot when my classmates say they are pop or emo cause they not.

Green Day started like a Punk band and maybe some song are not so PUNK cause they like to experiment with new things and new sounds and that's great for a band, don't make always the same cause could be boring but... what about St. Jimmy? i think is a very Punk rock song, well, just my opinon

and, i agree with Maddy, if they thinks they're Punk, that's ok for me ^^

I love that quote :D

Excuse me but, if my memory isn't fooling me, Billie Joe himself said that they killed punk

Well then if ur right I take that back, but usualy Green Day tend to call themselves a punk band

Of course Billie stated they killed punk. He also said they put the "fun" back in "dysfunctional", and that he was "pretty and demented".

Billie just loves making fun of/complimenting himself and the band. It's what he does

But there's nothing more punk than going against the grain and releasing a soft-ass song like Last Night On Earth. Come on. What other punk band would do that?

Yeah sure buddy

fuck yea

the totally fuck with people when they ask if their punk or watever. i think theyre just really sick of being asked that and talking about it. i mean, i would be if people had been talking about it for 20+ years. it gets old. its just music. its good music. lets focus on the MUSIC for fucks sake.

i dont think theyre the type of people that feel the need to explain their actions. its how they want to do music, take it or leave it.

So, if I say I'm punk, and start making ballads, nothing more than ballads, that makes me THE most punk person on earth? Turns me into the punk god?

Posted

Personally i say green day started a new era of punk, cos even though they are classed as punk its not the same sort of punk as the sex pistols or the clash. Its like they started a new generation of punk, but then again i dont know whether they started it just became part of it

If you understand any of that!

Green Day started as a pop punk band. Over the years they've kept a bit of that punk edge but have gotten experimental and now have turned into a stadium rock band. Who cares about genres though? They just cause unnecessary stupid hate. Green Day's a great band and that's all that matters.

Sorry, but you cant say that all green day do are ballads

Yeah he did but I think it was meant as sarcasm to the usual, "punk's dead" line that they were always hit with when they called themselves punk.

Yeah!! :D

No no, you don't get me, you'll see, that buddy up there said that making last night on earth was really punk, so I replied, "if I make a lot of ballads I become super punk?" it's just a twist to what that buddy said!
